An Expired Or Deactivated Credit Card
Trying to use an expired card or a deactivated account will nearly always result in having your transaction declined.
Look for your new credit card in the mail as soon as three to six months before your current card is set to expire. Even if you receive it before the expiration date, you dont need to wait: activate it as soon as you receive it, and destroy your old card. If you dont receive a new card, youll get a letter that explains your options for paying off your remaining balance.
Similarly, any change that the primary cardholder makes to an account on which you are an authorized user can affect your activity. For instance, if a card is reported lost or stolen, all cards on the account will be temporarily deactivated until new ones are issued. Thats also the case when the primary cardholder reaches the account credit limit or misses a payment. Even as an authorized user, you may be affected.
Always stay in communication with the primary cardholder of any accounts your information is on, and keep tabs on any upcoming expiration dates that may impact your card use.
Your Credit Card Has Expired
When your credit cards expiration date has passed, the card no longer will work.
If youve already received a card with a fresh expiration date, simply replace the old one with the new card. If you havent received a replacement card, you should contact the card issuer right away to make sure it hasnt been lost or stolen.
Funds In Your Account
If my payment is declined, the first thing I check is if there was actually money in my bank.
I know that I checked the available balance;before making the;purchase, but I didnt know if something else had happened in the meantime.
I love online banking as its so quick and easy to check everything and move money around. After a quick check and if everything is in order, I can see if there is anything else.
If there were insufficient funds in the bank, the purchase would get automatically declined.

Prevent False Blocks And False Declines
The varied reasons notwithstanding, 52% of the orders merchants thought were suspicious transactions turned out to be good orders that were caught in the fraud nets.
These declines were accompanied by messages like do not honor and processor declined.
They were good orders that could have been fulfilled.
When this is done to safeguard against possible fraudulent transactions, it is often a result of a simpler problem such as outdated card information, insufficient funds, system failure, or simply because the business is located in a country different than that of the card issuer.
In essence, part of battling card declines is fine-tuning the fraud filters in your control so they dont get in the way of good orders.
Heres how you do it,
Prevent false block
This fraud is declared by your gateway and is entirely in your control. Most gateways allow merchants to customize the rules they have in place to catch a suspicious transaction.
Your gateway allows you to either ignore, block, or flag payments that,
- fail AVS and CVV checks,;
- transactions initiated from a suspicious location checks,;
- transactions over a specified credit limit check, and so on.
Blacklists and whitelists are among the top methods used by companies in fraud management. Rather than blacklist and block transactions like these , it might make sense to allow the transactions and flag it for a review later .

Using Old Or Rarely Used Cards

Another reason why many people find their cards declined, even for small purchases, is if the card in question has been unused, gathering dust for a while, before being brought out to make a purchase.
As with the above, if a credit card issuer suddenly sees a card used for an attempted purchase that has not been used in a long time, they may well flag it up and put the purchase on hold.
This in fact happened to the President of the United States himself, Barack Obama. His card was declined when he tried to buy a not overly expensive meal.

Reasons Why Your Debit Card Got Declined
By Ricky Willis | last updated 26th August 2021
Your debit card doesnt just get declined because you have no money. If it gets declined you dont need to panic, and there are things you can do to put it right.
I decided to buy something the other evening shock horror!!
We have been talking about buying a bit of software we can use on the blog and have been putting it off for some time.
I know that by owning it, the blog will grow, and we might be;able to earn more money, but, on the other hand, it means I have to spend money.
Naomi and I had a long chat, and, feeling a little nervous, I double-checked my bank to see the money was there and headed to the website.
Even though we had made the decision, I was still a little unsure.
I rechecked the pages, seeing what this product could actually do. Searched for any discount codes.
I even spent a good hour reading reviews to make sure we were making the right choice.
Naomi started getting a bit frustrated and was shifting in her chair. I know that she could tell I was putting the decision off.
Enough was enough. I clicked the buy now button and was taken to the payment page.
I was met with two options: pay by debit card or pay by PayPal.
My initial reaction was PayPal would be easier as I wouldnt have to get my debit card out and enter all the information.
Plus, I presumed that because PayPal offers buyer protection, it would actually be safer than using a debit/credit card

You Reached Your Credit Limit
Your card can be declined if youve hit the cards credit limit, or the upper threshold of charges you can put on the card. Its your banks way of saying you cannot borrow any more money until you make a payment.;
Lets say you have a $4,000 credit limit, your balance is $3,500, and youre trying to put $1,000 worth of things on there theyre not going to allow that to go through a lot of the time, says Anna NJie-Konte, a certified financial planner and founder of Dare to Dream Financial Planning.
Maxing out your credit card hinders your ability to make purchases, but its also not good for your credit score and can lead to long-term debt. Plus, reaching your credit limit is detrimental to your the ratio of your credit card balances to your overall limit heavily influences your credit score. Youll increase your odds of having a good credit score if you dont exceed 30% of the available credit on your cards, and ideally keep your utilization below 10%. Generally the less credit you use, the better it is for your credit score.;
You may be more likely to max out your card if you carry a balance since youre adding charges on top of the balance you already have, which also affects your utilization all the more reason to pay your bills in full every month.
Your Account Was Closed

Why Was My Card Declined When I Have Money
Debit cards can be even when you have money. Verify you have money, use the right pin, and the card has been activated. Your card type may not be accepted, is expired, or may have been flagged for suspicious activity. Verify you have provided correct information and contact your bank if problems persist.
The Type Of Card You Have Isnt Accepted
The Issue
Not all credit cards are created equally. Certain boast wider acceptance than others, with Visa and Mastercard leading the pack.
Discover is accepted widely in the United States, but not as much in other countries. And in some countries Discover cards arent accepted at all.
American Express is a popular network, but its known for the higher interchange fees it charges businesses that take its cards. As a result, Amex cards are accepted in a considerable selection of countries, but whether theyre widely accepted within a given country varies.
Insider tip
Theres also the occasional merchant that wont take a particular credit card. Costcoonly accepts Visa credit cards, for example, and credit cards on other networks arent allowed .
The Solution
Most merchants make it clear which types of credit cards they accept. If youre shopping online, look for the websites FAQ section. Youll usually find a network list with other common payment questions. Or you can do a Google search and you might find the answer on a different site.
As for brick-and-mortar stores, youll probably find signs or stickers depicting which cards the merchant accepts on the door or near the cash register. If all else fails, ask a cashier, and he or she should be able to tell you.

What If My Card Is Declined
Anne Phan, BBVA Director of Issuing, is in charge of the bank’s consumer and small business payments activities, including credit, debit, prepaid and personal line of credit payment solutions. She says if your card is declined for no apparent reason, contact the bank using the number on the back of your card. Most likely, you’ll get an instant transaction alert from your bank letting you know the dollar amount and the location where the purchase was attempted.
Some banks have even taken these alerts a step further. They are offering you the ability to acknowledge whether the transaction is fraudulent immediately with a fraud text alert that has the ability to accept a response back to the original text,” she says. If;you respond that the transaction is legitimate, they will release the hold and ask that you reattempt your transaction. If you indicate that the transaction was not legitimate they will block your card and ask that you notify them for further research and/or next steps.”

Understanding Decline Codes And Error Messages
Irrespective of whats causing the payment to fail, every time a card is declined, your gateway issues two accompanying, but different pieces of information,
An error code: It is typically a number, a code that identifies the error to the system.
An error message: It is typically in words, a message that identifies the problem to you and your customer.
Both codes and messages are recorded for you. Your gateway puts them down so you can take a look at the failed payment later.
Say your customer is in the process of checking out and has just hit the pay button after giving their information. If their card is declined, they will see an error code and an error message. Something along the lines of,
Unfortunately, there are no standardized error codes that might help them make sense of what went wrong. Error codes differ from gateway to gateway. , for example, throws up error codes as you see in the screenshot above: E00005 and E00027. In the same way, Braintree throws up error codes like 2046 and 2048.
Heres the thing though,
Error messages are vague
But, why are they vague?
Ethoca, a charge and fraud protection company contacted several card issuers and asked. Heres what they discovered:
First, card issuers are protecting their cardholders privacy. They are reluctant to share with merchants that the cardholder is behind on paying their bill, maxed out on their credit card, or have lost their card.
How To Resolve A Declined Card Payment

Payment declines happen from time to time, and when they do – it is important to understand the reason so that the purchase can be finished successfully.
In short
To resolve a declined payment, you’ll need to figure out why the payment was declined.;Usually, this involves contacting your bank or credit card company to fix the issue.
1. Figure out the reason for the decline
Once the declined payment happens, your credit card company or bank may share the reason for the decline with us. If this is the case, we show the reason to you in;the form of an error message.
Keep in mind that Swimmo doesn’t decline your payment – your credit card company or bank does.;If there’s no reason listed, we don’t have the details, and you’ll need to contact your credit card company or bank for the reason.
2. Contact your credit card company or bank
If you couldn’t figure out why your payment was declined, or if you can’t solve the issue, contact the bank that issued your credit card. Swimmo support can’t help you with any declines. This is because your bank, not Swimmo, is the one that declines your payment.
