Visa Vs Mastercard Vs Discover Vs American Express: How Widely Accepted Are They

What Are Credit Card Rewards? | Discover | Credit Resource Center

Visa and Mastercard are by far the most widely accepted cards, with Discover slightly behind those brands and American Express in a distant fourth place. Any retailer that accepts card payments likely takes Visa and Mastercard. In terms of the number of countries serviced, Discover lags behind the other three cards.

Consumers who have Discover and American Express credit cards are likely to run into the most trouble finding merchants who accept their cards, especially when travelling outside the United States. Discover has leveraged international partnerships with other card networks, including UnionPay. These alliances have allowed Discover to become one of the most widely accepted international card brands. Still, as you can see below, Discover still has gaps in coverage when it comes to certain major countries.

In the past few years, American Express has worked diligently to work with merchants in the U.S. to increase acceptance. A Feb. 2020 Nilson Report claims that American Express is now accepted at 10.6 million merchants in the United States, equating to a 99% acceptance rate.

Why You Should Still Get A Discover Card

Even though you may sometimes have problems with your Discover card not being accepted for payment, its still a good card to keep in your wallet.

If you have bad credit, then youll notice that Discover is great at extending credit to you and giving you a credit card.

Discover also offers some great credit cards for students, who may not have ever built credit at all.

But you dont need to have no credit or bad credit for Discover Card to be a good choice for your financial situation.

Discover credit cards have a lot of great features and benefits that attract new users. Some of my favorite things about Discover card are no annual fees, cash back rewards, and low introductory interest rates.

They also have good balance transfer offers, if you have good credit.

Cash Advances Carry A Fee

Discover charges a fee for cash advances as either a set cash amount or a percentage of your total cash advance, depending on your cardholder agreement.

You will need to pay this fee with the grace-free daily interest rate, which may add up when you consider a credit card transaction with Discovery does not carry these costs.

What Youll Find On All Discover Cards

Several years ago, the Discover Card unified all of its products under the Discover it brand, which is essentially a platform for all of its personal and small business cards. These cards share many of the same features and benefits including no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees and no penalty fee on your first late payment.

Discover it cards offer cash-back rewards, and all cards are eligible to receive the Cashback Match at the end of your first year. Other benefits include access to your free Credit Scorecard with your FICO® Credit Score, as well as a suite of tools to help prevent fraud and identity theft.

You can use your Discover card to receive cash at checkout from a number of major retailers, without incurring cash advance fees or paying a higher interest rate. On the other hand, the Discover card no longer offers many benefits that you might be accustomed to receiving from your credit card, such as rental car insurance, purchase protection and extended warranty coverage.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of The Casino Banking Method

Ease of use Credit and debit cards were the first payment methods to provide online funds transfer services using their capabilities, which is why this issuer should have no problem with user know-how. Practically the same depositing and withdrawal process has been going on since the early days of e-commerce, and players at these casino sites are simply invited to employ such existing skills at their chosen platform.

With all these advantages, hardly anyone cares about the few shortcomings the service is claimed to have. Nevertheless, for an optimal casino banking experience, it is best that interested players are aware of all aspects equally:

  • Country restrictions The restrictions in terms of card holders may differ from casino players eligible to use them as a banking method. Such is the case with the US, which is Discovers original marketplace, yet completely unavailable for their player pool. Such differences and limitations could seem complicated or even unwelcoming to players globally, even though they dont affect the individual user experience.
  • Hidden charges A more disturbing shortcoming of this service is the fact that the company hides specific charges in their fine prints. This mostly refers to credit cards, and concerns the interest rates applied to a holders line of credit. With a wide APR percentage range, clients could end up being exposed to some hefty fees without being aware of such risks.

Visa Vs Discover: Credit Card Acceptance

Global acceptance is one area where Visa comes out ahead against Discover. Visa features nearly global acceptance, with usage in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. That could be the reason there are currently more than 3.3 billion Visa cards in use, according to the card network.

Discover boasts that their cards are accepted by 99 percent of places that take credit cards, which sounds good in theory. Unfortunately, the Discover coverage map shows huge gaps in global acceptance in Africa, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. The reality is, there are many more destinations worldwide where you just cant use a Discover card, whereas youll almost always be able to use a Visa in places credit cards are accepted.

Visa Vs Discover: Odds Of Approval

Both Visa and Discover consider their approval process to be proprietary, so there are no hard and fast rules to help you determine whether you can get one of their cards. With that being said, both Visa and Discover have cards for consumers with poor credit all the way up to excellent credit. For example, the Discover it® Secured Credit Card is geared to consumers who need to build credit from scratch or repair credit mistakes from the past. Meanwhile, the U.S. Bank Secured Visa® card is a Visa option that can help you do the same.

The top rewards credit cards from both Visa and Discover are typically available to consumers with very good or excellent credit.
