Is The British Airways Visa Card Worth It

The;British Airways Visa Card has an excellent welcome bonus, and that could be an excellent motivator for picking up this card. However, personally this isnt a card I would use for everyday spending, since you can earn British Airways Avios at a better rate with other American Express or Chase cards.
That said, I absolutely think this card is worth holding onto if you fly British Airways with any frequency:
- The value of saving 10% on British Airways flights will add up quickly
- The up to $600 in credits for carrier-imposed surcharges can cover the annual fee on this card over and over, if you redeem Avios for travel on British Airways that originates in the United States with any frequency
- If you redeem Avios on British Airways, the Travel Together Ticket could be well worth it
For me the BA Visa more than justifies the annual fee

What Is An Air Miles Credit Card
An airline miles credit card rewards you with points when you make purchases using the card. The market is dominated by American Express, a card company that specialises in rewards programmes.;;
The more money you spend, the more points you accrue.;
These miles can be exchanged for free or discounted flights, or other travel perks such as seat upgrades, companion vouchers or free hotel stays.
British Airways Fuel Surcharges
Or as I like to call them, the devil. Basically a fuel surcharge is exactly as it sounds an additional fee charged by the airline . If these surcharges were a fewbucks, whatever. But they typically arent. Especially with British Airways. Fuel surcharges with BA are typically in the hundreds of bucks.
Such high fees completely negate the point of accumulating points.;Points and miles are meant to give us free-ish travel. Fuel surcharges neutralize these perks.
Thankfully, there are ways around these pesky fees. Using BAs website, one can search and book flights with any of their partners who dont have fuel surcharges. . Dont pay fuel surcharges.

How Does An Avios Credit Card Work
Avios is a rewards scheme that is linked to airline frequent flyer clubs. The Avios credit card, works in a very similar way to supermarket and loyalty cards, such as Nectar and Tesco Clubcard.
The value of your Avios points varies depending on how and where you spend them. They don’t have a fixed value.
Sometimes theyre worth more if you are taking advantage of a special promotion.
You can move or combine Avios points from different sources in order to build up enough to exchange for flights or holidays.

How To Turn Reward Points Into Travel Savings
When you fly or spend money on your air mile card, you accumulate loyalty points. You can then combine these to put towards a flight, hotel or another trip.
You may be able to add an automatic setting which means you do not have to manually convert the points.
Some credit cards give you different points which you can exchange or convert to Airmiles.
For example, Tesco Clubcard lets you go online and exchange your Clubcard voucher points for flying miles. Once youve converted your Clubcard points into Avios, you cannot swap them back.
With Tesco, you could convert your Clubcard points into British Airways Executive Club Avios points.
Every £1 you spend at Tesco gets you 1 Clubcard point. 250 points gives you £2.50 of Clubcard vouchers. This equates to 600 British Airways Executive Club Avios. So, to get £2.50 worth of vouchers, you need to spend £250.
If youre a member of the Virgin Atlantic Flying Club loyalty scheme, you can swap your Tesco Clubcard points for flying miles. In this case £2.50 of vouchers is equivalent to 625 flying miles.
Likewise, £5 in Tesco vouchers gives you £15 to spend via Hotels.com.
Because it takes a lot to build up points, these cards are well suited for big spenders.
Can I Get A 0% Credit Card With Avios
None of the dedicated, Avios-earning credit cards offer interest-free spending .
However, as of 25 January 2021, Sainsburys customers can exchange Nectar points for Avios air miles. And the good news is that Sainsburys does offer 0% deals.
Sainsburys cards allow you to earn Nectar points which can then be exchanged for Avios. Youll collect up to 3 Nectar points for every £1 spent on Sainsburys shopping, and 1 Nectar point for every £5 spent elsewhere. That means, for example, that if youre putting a hefty purchase on a Sainsburys 0% card to spread the cost, youll be able to earn Nectar on your purchase.
Under the Nectar/Avios scheme, all existing and future Avios air miles can also be converted to Sainsburys Nectar points at the rate of roughly 0.8p per Avios. This means you can use your Avios air miles towards purchases at places like Sainsburys, Argos, eBay and many more. To convert points, youll need to link your Nectar and British Airways Executive Club accounts.

Maximizing The British Airways Distance
MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.
There are plenty of things that arent ideal about British Airways and its Avios loyalty points. From seats to food to service, its inflight product leaves a lot to be desired, and hefty, carrier-imposed surcharges make it difficult to find good value with an award ticket that routes to London.
But one important redeeming quality is a distance-based award chart that lets you fly for next to nothing in some of the worlds most expensive markets. Knowing how to use it can go a long way toward getting maximum value for your points.
Today well take a close look at how this works so you can redeem your Avios for valuable rewards on your next trip.

As we mentioned above, Chase isnt the only bank that can help you earn Avios. American Express cards that earn Membership Rewards can also boost your Avios collection.
Keep in mind that American Express occasionally runs promotions that improve the 1:1 transfer ratio by up to 40%. Keep an eye out for these opportunities if you need Avios!

Use These Cards For All Day
These cards are designed to encourage you to spend but never spend more than you need to. Instead, use the card for all normal day-to-day purchases then set up a direct debit to repay in full each month and you’ll soon see the miles adding up.
You could max it even further by using the card for work expenses if you need to reclaim them. This can be a powerful way to earn more miles at no cost to you, provided you can cope with paying the bill in full each month. Check it’s fine with your employer though, and there’s a chance it could be seen as a taxable benefit .
Can I add an additional cardholder to my account to boost miles/points?
Yes, you can. By doing so, both your spending collects the miles or points. This technique is particularly useful for cards that need you to hit a certain target to get a free companion flight.
Remember: with credit cards there’s no such thing as a joint card it’s your card and you’re giving them permission to spend on it. Any spending is yours to pay off, not theirs.
Can I buy extra points/miles?
You can with most schemes mentioned in this guide, so you can top yours up if you’re short. Better still, if you’re collecting miles and also redeeming a companion flight, you’ll earn miles doing so, so in effect you get double the value.
Once you’ve joined your scheme, you can buy extra points or miles at;the Avios website;or via;British Airways.

How To Maximize Your Rewards
Youll typically get more value out of redeeming your miles for award flights than any other option. However, it can take some work to find the best redemption value. This includes researching different itineraries and calculating how much value each one offers. You may need to try different dates and destinations.
To calculate how much your miles are worth, divide the retail cash price of the fare by how many Avios you’ll need to book an award ticket. For example, divide $1,864 by 58,500 Avios to get 3.19 cents per Avios.
If youre booking with British Airways, though, youll need to include the cost of the taxes, fees, and carrier charges in your calculation. If you have to pay $562 on top of your Avios for that $1,864 ticket, youre essentially using your rewards to cover the remaining $1,302 of the cash price. If you then divide that amount by 58,500 Avios, you’ll get 2.23 cents apiece.
Strategic redemptions can take time, but it can be worth it if maximizing your rewards is a top priority.

If You Need Other Credit Soon Such As A Mortgage It May Not Be The Right Time To Apply For A Credit Card
You need to weigh up whether getting one is going to harm other more important credit applications you may have on the horizon multiple searches on your credit file in a short space of time can damage your chances of getting future credit.
So if you think you’ll need to apply for important credit soon, such as a mortgage, hold off applying as you’ll need to spread out your applications.
British Airways Travel Together Ticket

One of the potentially great perks of the British Airways Visa is that you can earn a Travel Together Ticket when you spend $30,000 on the card in a calendar year.
This companion ticket will be deposited in your Executive Club account four to six weeks after youve completed the required spending.
The voucher will appear in your Executive Club account
With this certificate, you can book a British Airways award ticket at the full cost of Avios and carrier-imposed surcharges, and then for the second person, you just have to pay the surcharges.
While British Airways has hefty surcharges for travel on its own flights, this can still represent a great deal for first & business class travel, given how much those tickets would otherwise cost.
This isnt for everyone, though it has the potential to represent a good value, and I know its a feature that many value.
The Travel Together Ticket can be worth it for first class travel
