  • What Does It Mean To Have No Credit

To have no credit means youre among one of the estimated 45 million people living in America who are unscorable or .

According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, that means you do not have a credit history with one of the nationwide credit reporting companies or lack sufficient credit history to produce a credit score. When a lender goes to perform a credit check on you, there is no recorded credit history for them to make an informed lending decision.

This may describe you if youre a young adult new to credit the most common reason to have no credit or a recent immigrant without a Social Security number. In either case, financial products are available that can help you begin your credit building journey, including a starter credit card or .

When youre approved for a loan or line of credit, your new account information is reported to at least one of the three major credit bureaus Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. Youll develop a credit score when your new account is first reported to the credit bureau, which may take up to six months, but should happen sooner.

No credit is sometimes confused with bad credit, but the two are very different. Bad credit is the result of a history of financial missteps, including late payments, maxed-out credit cards, or bankruptcy. No credit means youre a blank slate, and youre an unknown for lenders.

Which Credit Card Companies Offer Pre

Almost all issuers offer at least one pre-qualified credit card. This is especially true for cards designed to meet the needs of consumers with bad credit.

Of the six credit card issuers reviewed here, all but one, Citi, has at least one preapproved credit card offer. But remember that a preapproved offer is an option that can be terminated at any time, as we saw during the COVID pandemic. Indeed, many issuers stopped accepting any new card applications during parts of the pandemic.

I received an email from someone who visited our site with questions about credit scores and rewards cards. Taylor is a recent college graduate planning to apply for her first credit card, and she wanted to know:

    • Is FICO the most reliable measure of her credit score?
    • Would checking her credit score actually hurt her credit score?
    • Are travel cards better than cash back cards?
    • Does she have the credit score to qualify for a travel card?

Heres a summary of my answers:

What Should You Look For In Your First Credit Card

If you have no established credit history, the first thing you should look for in your first credit card is an offer designed for people in your situation. You dont want to fill out an application for a credit card that requires excellent or even good credit scores to qualify. They are out of your reach at this point. Rather, you should search for cards marketed to people with no credit or limited credit.

Believe it or not, the interest rate on your credit card probably shouldnt be the most important feature you consider. If you manage your accounts wisely, youll be paying off your balance in full every month so you wont accrue interest fees.

Focus on the other aspects of the account that may make it easier for you to qualify. These factors may include the following:

Make sure you know before you start shopping for a card which features are deal-breakers, and which you can live with .

Are There Credit Cards For Businesses With No Or Limited Credit History

How to get approved for credit cards: Calling Reconsideration

Just as there are credit card offers designed for consumers with limited or no credit history, you may also find credit card offers for businesses that are in the same predicament. In general, you shouldnt expect the rates, fees, or rewards on these credit cards to be as attractive as the offers that may be available to businesses with well-established credit profiles.

Also keep in mind that when you apply for a business credit card, its common for both your personal credit reports and business credit reports to be considered by the lender as part of the application. If you dont think you can meet a lenders qualification requirements for an unsecured business credit card that doesnt mean you are out of luck.

You may still be able to qualify for a secured credit card for your business even if the business owner or the business itself has little to no previously established credit history.

The business card issuer may ask the company owner to personally guarantee the debt associated with the business card. This is not unusual, so dont take it personally if this is asked of you. Just be aware that any default on the business card will likely fall back on you personally.

How Many Credit Cards Should You Have At One Time

Everyone has an answer to the how many question. The truth is, there is no right or wrong number of credit cards you should have.

Yes, you could potentially damage your credit scores and your wallet by applying for, opening, and using too many credit card accounts at the same time. However, if you spread out your credit card applications over time, it is possible to open numerous credit card accounts and still maintain great credit scores meaning you can have as many of the best credit cards for no credit as you want to help you start building credit.

These are all variables that can impact your credit scores, positively or negatively. As for usability, having more credit cards of different brands is certainly better than it is problematic.

There was a time where certain credit card brands were not universally accepted. Those days are long gone. However, there are still merchants here and there that will only accept certain types of credit cards.

So, to the extent you have at least one of every type of card, you know youll never run into a usability issue because you can always pull out a different card for your purchases.

How Do Credit Card Issuers Determine Your Credit Limit

[OFFER]: Get $45 from me for Jasper Credit Card Approval ...

Your credit limit is a reflection of what the credit card issuer thinks you can reasonably repay based upon your income and credit score.

When you apply for a credit card, the issuing bank will take into account the following factors when determining your credit line:

    • Your credit score
    • Your monthly rent or mortgage payment
    • Your existing credit lines and balances
    • Your employment history
    • Your address history

Your credit score and monthly cash flow are the most important factors in determining the credit limit on a new credit card. Two people with the exact same credit scores may get very different credit lines depending upon their reported income and expenses.

For the most part, the more money you earn, the more credit a bank will extend to you.

    Rogers World Elite Mastercard

Frequent U.S. travellers and cross-border shoppers need a card that wont break the bank when it comes to the foreign transaction fees that most banks charge. It is usually 2.5% for purchases made in another currency. The Rogers World Elite gets this nod because it offers 3% cash back on U.S.-currency purchases, which works out to a 0.5% return when you factor in foreign transaction fees. Pair that with no annual fee, and 1.5% back on all other purchases, and you have a competitive card.

However, world travellers will want to keep in mind that only the regular 1.5% earn rate will apply on foreign currency purchases outside the U.S., so you wont come out ahead after being hit with the 2.5% foreign transaction fee.

This card does include travel medical insurance, which covers you for trips up to 10 days. However, it also comes with a $15,000-a-year minimum spend, and a steep annual income requirement. So youll want to consider another option if you dont make $80,000 a year as an individual, or $150,000 as a household.

    • Annual fee: $0
    • Welcome bonus: $25 when you make your first purchase within your first 3 months
    • Earn rate: 3% on purchases in U.S. currency and 1.5% cash back on all other purchases
    • Income requirement: $80,000 individual $150,000 household
    • Additional benefits: Travel emergency medical insurance for 10 days rental car insurance trip interruption and cancellation coverage

Here Are The Alternatives To Getting A Credit Card At 1:

    • Become an authorized user: Theres no minimum age requirement for authorized users.
    • Get a job and wait two years: You can get your own credit card account when youre 18, as long as you have enough independent income for monthly bill payments. You should get a student credit card if you go to college, as they tend to have much better terms than other starter credit cards. A secured credit card is a good backup plan, too.
    • Get a debit card: This wont help you build credit, and you wont be able to borrow money. But a debit card linked to your checking account will free you from having to carry cash all the time.

You can get a credit card at 16. You just cant get an account in your own name. But if someone is willing to add you as an authorized user, you can start learning about, using and building credit. And in a couple years, youll be able to get your first card.

No, you cannot get a card from American Express with no credit. The only American Express card for people with no credit used to be the USAA® Secured American Express® Card, but you cant apply for it anymore. They stopped accepting new applications in 2018. Now, there are no American Express credit cards for no credit.

Most store credit cards require fair credit or better for approval. There are, however, a number of co-branded cards for no credit. Theyre affiliated with a particular store or company but can be used anywhere.
