Adding A Card That Youve Used Before

What’s In My Wallet? | Credit Card Journey 2021

If youve made a purchase on your iPhone before youll see the last four digits of your card next to card on file. If thats the card you want to add to Wallet and set up Apple Pay with, enter your three-digit CVV Security Code, then tap Next.

Finally, agree to the Terms and Conditions, then either verify your card for Apple Pay or tap Complete Verification Later. We recommend verifying the card as soon as you can because you wont be able to use it with Apple Pay until is it verified.

American Express Blue Business Plus

My next most used card is one of my two catch-all cards. This card earns 2x MR points on all purchases. Any spending that doesnt fall into a bonus earning category on another card goes on this one. Cards like the Amex Gold or the Chase Sapphire Reserve earn only 1x points on purchases outside of their bonus categories. So Id rather earn 2x points on this card then 1x points on any other card. Plus Amex makes it easy by pooling MR points, so spending on any card in the MR family are put into the same account automatically.

How Contactless Credit Cards Work

Contactless credit cards have a small embedded chip emitting electromagnetic waves. This chip is not the insert chip you use instead of swiping. When you place your card within a few inches of a contactless-enabled payment terminal, your payment information is transferred.

While its often referred to as tap to pay, no tapping is actually needed. Instead, you usually need to place your card within a few inches of the payment terminal to initiate payment.

It may take a second or two for the transaction to complete, so dont pull your card away too quickly. To indicate when the transaction is complete, the payment terminal may beep, display a green checkmark or flash a green light.

Can Anyone Get A Credit Card

Most people can apply for and receive a credit card, but if they have a history of bad credit or no credit, the credit cards for which they are eligible may not be as useful. Those without credit or with very bad credit may apply for a secured credit card, where the credit line is secured by a deposit when opening the card. For more attractive rewards cards, higher credit scores are needed.

American Express Us Platinum Card

Ricky

Its probably overkill to hold all four Platinum cards between the US and Canada but thats exactly the situation I find myself in at the moment.

I had first applied for the Amex US Platinum Card two years ago, earning a bonus of 75,000 US MR points .

Over the course of the first year, I found plenty of value in the 5x points earnings on airfare purchases, the ongoing Amex Offers, and the refer-a-friend bonuses that I decided to keep the card for a second year for another US$550.

Of course, the coronavirus pandemic would then arrive, leading Amex US to introduce a series of generous monthly credits in 2020 followed by US$180 in PayPal credits for the first half of 2021.

Combine that with the standard credits and perks on the Platinum Card, and Ill still be coming out ahead this year, so I might very well decide to play yet another round.

American Express Us Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant + Business Cards

Keeping these two cards is a no-brainer since we tend to stay at a lot of Marriott properties when we travel. Having status with Marriott has given us great perks like suite upgrades and free breakfast for the family.

Holding both the US Bonvoy Brilliant and US Bonvoy Business cards effectively gives me 30 elite nights every year, which more than halves the annual requirement to achieve Platinum Elite status to maintain these benefits. With both cards, Im also well on my way to achieving lifetime Platinum status.

Lets also not forget the Free Night Awards that come with both cards. The 50,000-point certificate with the Brilliant, plus its US$300 Marriott credit, will more than make up for the annual fee.

On top of that, there are usually plenty of Amex Offers on the card for additional statement credits, and the Brilliant also comes with no foreign exchange fees, so its great for paying for my hotel stays when Im abroad.

Best Whenyou Want Cash Back

Capital One Visa Business Platinum No Hassle Cash

Why we like it: You can probably find a higher cash-back rate, says Curtis Arnold, founder of CardRatings.com. But choose this card if you want to earn rewards on purchases other than office supplies and gas. The card gives you 1 percent back on everything you buy, plus an annual bonus equal to 25 percent of the cash you received that year. There are no caps on how much you can earn. The card also offers a 0 percent APR on all purchases you make until October 2008.

Drawbacks: After October 2008, it has a relatively high 14.99 percent interest rate–so interest charges could wipe out your cash back.

Although many people will cancel the Platinum Card after its first year because of its hefty annual fee, I find a lot of value in keeping it around.

On the earning side, the 2x bonus on travel is great if you are not into the US credit card game, and the 3x bonus on dining is pretty decent after Ive maximized my Cobalts 5x allowance.

On the redemption side, there is the $200 annual travel credit which we have always found a use for, typically with hotel bookings.

The other huge benefit for us is lounge access for the family. I actually hold a supplementary card on my husbands account he had signed up for the Platinum Card with a free supplementary card offer under a Travelzoo deal, so we are essentially getting two Platinum cards for the price of one.

Lounges that are a part of the American Express Global Lounge Collection usually allow complimentary access for a cardholder plus one or two guests. For other lounges, the Priority Pass Select membership allows each of us to bring one complimentary guest, so that covers four of us.

Yes, we do have a third child, who 80% of the time has been able to sweet-talk or smile her way into a lounge for free.

How Can You Use Your Digital Wallet

One of the benefits of a digital wallet is the freedom of quick transactions. And that can come in handyâespecially when youâre out and about and realize you left your physical wallet at home.

Many retailers now have updated payment terminals that are compatible with contactless payments like mobile wallets and contactless cards.

Here are just a few ways you can use your digital wallet:

    • Online: If youâre an avid online shopper, entering your card information every time you make a payment can get a bit tedious. Digital wallets can eliminate that process by automatically filling in your information for you. So checking out is just a few clicks away.
    • On the go: Simply pay with your mobile wallet on your smartphone, smartwatch or other mobile device when youâre checking out in store.
    • In apps: Use your digital wallet for easy, secure in-app purchases.
    • At ATMs: You might also be able to use your mobile wallet instead of a physical card at some ATMs.

    Spending Can Lead To Debt

When you make purchases with a credit card, youre spending the banks money, not your own. This money has to be repaid, with interest. At the very least, youre required to make the minimum payment due each month. Racking up high balances on multiple cards could make it difficult to keep up with monthly payments and strain your budget.

    What’s The Right Call

If you’ve struggled to manage multiple credit card accounts in the past, then limiting yourself to a single credit card could be a good bet. And if the credit card in question offers a lot of perks, then you may not end up missing out on much.

On the other hand, sticking to only one credit card could mean losing the opportunity to score money-saving benefits. It pays to consider expanding your credit card collection, even if you opt to do so slowly.

If you’re used to using one credit card only, you don’t have to go from that to a stuffed wallet. But going from one credit card to two or three may not be such a bad move.

    What Is A Credit Card

What’s In My Wallet (Q2 2022) | My Credit Card Strategy

A is a card issued by a financial institution, typically a bank, and it enables the cardholder to borrow funds from that institution. Cardholders agree to pay the money back with interest, according to the institutions terms. Credit cards are issued in the following variety of categories:

    • Standard cards simply extend a line of credit to their users for making purchases, balance transfers, and/or cash advances, and they often have no annual fee.
    • Premium cards offer perks such as concierge services, airport lounge access, special event access, and more, but they usually have higher annual fees.
    • Rewards cards offer cash back, travel points, or other benefits to customers based on how they spend.
    • Balance transfer cards have low introductory interest rates and fees on balance transfers from another credit card.
    • Secured credit cards require an initial cash deposit that is held by the issuer as collateral.
    • Charge cards have no preset spending limit but often dont allow unpaid balances to carry over from month to month.

When choosing rewards cards, pay attention to whether rewards can expire and what options you have for redeeming them.

American Express Us Business Platinum Card

    Ricky

Its a similar story with the Amex US Business Platinum Card. I had opened it two years ago for 100,000 US MR points, and then gotten tremendous value out of the complimentary WeWork Global Access membership that came with the card.

The WeWork access ended in 2020, but Im still getting a 25% discount on my monthly WeWork membership through an Amex Offer. Throw in a very welcome US$200 appreciation credit in 2020 and the US$200 in Dell credits every year , and Im still coming out ahead well into Year 2.

Having said that, the cards US$595 annual fee is extremely steep, no matter how you slice it. I probably wouldve dropped the card last year if it werent for the US$200 appreciation credit, so unless I get another one of those this year, Ill most likely say goodbye to this card and stick with the personal variant.

Many of use know the panicked feeling of discovering that a wallet full of bank cards, credit cards and ID is missing. Heres a step-by-step guide for what to do if that happens.

Jennifer Kesteloot was in the process of moving house in London, Ont., three years ago, when her wallet was stolen while she made a quick stop to pick something up at Walmart.

Although shed always been very careful about documents such has her birth certificate, social insurance number card and passport, on the day of the move she put all three in her wallet. I thought they would be safer with me than in a box with the moving company, Kesteloot recalls.

Never in a million years did I think that in two seconds of turning my back to pick something up off a shelf that somebody would reach into my purse and just take my wallet.

Many of us know the panicked feeling of discovering that a wallet full of bank cards*, credit cards and ID is missing. Naturally, we hope that weve just left it behind on the counter at the bakery or hardware store, and that retracing our steps will put it back in our hot little hands.

I had to go through all these hoops to prove to Rogers, and Bell, and the bank, and this credit card company that it wasnt me, says Kesteloot, who now lives a short distance from London in St. Thomas, Ont.
