Why It Made Sense To Get The Platinum Amex Card
Doing some quick math, it made sense to get the card. The annual fee is $695 so Ive dug quite a hole to get back to even, not to mention this being a great deal.
The two credits Ill use with no effort are the $240 in digital credits and $169 Clear reimbursement.
$695 $240 $169 = I still need another $283 in credits to break even.
I am stopping here to think if I would get the AMEX Platinum Card if there were a 75,000 Membership Rewards sign-up bonus for a $299 annual fee. I probably would, so Im confident this is a good deal, at least for the first year.
With some effort and recklessly spending money I otherwise wouldnt, I can unlock another $650 $850 in value.
- $200 Airline Fee Credit
- $100 Saks Credit
- $200 Fine Hotels & Resorts Credit
Whether I keep the card past the first year is up in the air. It depends on how difficult it is to use the credits listed above. If Im struggling to break even, Ill downgrade to one of the other AMEX charge cards.
Regardless of how it happened, AMEX managed to get me to rejoin the Platinum club. Lets see how long I stay this time.

United Club Infinite Card
Another option from Chase is the United Club Infinite cardideal for domestic and international travelers who frequently fly United. Cardholders have access to over 45 United Club lounges and affiliated Star Alliance lounges worldwide. Travel companions are welcome into any lounge.
The United Club Infinite card offers a $525 annual fee. Cardholders earn 4 miles per dollar on United purchases, 2 miles per dollar on all other travel, on dining including eligible delivery services and 1 mile per dollar on all other purchases.
Lets Start With Priority Pass
Priority Pass is a network of 1,300 independent airport lounges across the world. The Priority Pass website here has a list of all of the lounges you can access you are very likely to find one wherever you are travelling, although Heathrow Terminal 2 is currently a blind spot.
Note that No1 Lounges which operates at Heathrow, Gatwick and Birmingham has now rejoined Priority Pass after the business was taken over, following a period away.
Your American Express Platinum charge card comes with 2 free Priority Pass cards. You, as main cardholder, receive one and your first supplementary cardholder receives one. They arrive in the post at roughly the same time as your Platinum card.
Each Priority Pass card lets you take a guest into a lounge for free. Some people dont join the dots here what this means is that you can get a full family of four into an airport lounge with your Priority Pass. All you need to do is make sure that your partner is your first supplementary cardholder on your Platinum account and so gets their own Priority Pass. Both adults can then guest in one child each.
Additional guest are charged at £20 each. This is automatically charged by Priority Pass to your Platinum card.
Priority Pass also has a deal with The Grain Store at London Gatwicks South Terminal , the terminal used by British Airways in normal times. You can go to The Grain Store, show your Priority Pass and get £30 of credit to spend on food and drink, either to eat in or take away.

Ability To Earn Membership Rewards Points Worth Significantly More Than Delta Skymiles
Delta SkyMiles have been devalued a lot over the years. While you can find some great value when redeeming for domestic economy flights, youre out of luck if youre trying to find a long-haul business-class flight for reasonable rates.
Unfortunately, those devaluations will likely continue, but the best way to protect yourself from airline and hotel valuations is to open a card that earns transferable points, like the Amex Platinum.
With the American Express Membership Rewards program, you can transfer your points to 20-plus airline and hotel loyalty programs including Delta SkyMiles. You can find even better value with certain partners, such as transferring to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club to score Delta One to Europe for just 50,000 Virgin miles.
Thats why TPG values Membership Rewards points at 2 cents each, and Delta SkyMiles at 1.41 cents apiece.
These valuations also factor into the ongoing earning rates of these cards:
- Amex Platinum:
- 5 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline and through Amex Travel 10% return.
- 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel 10% return.
- 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases 2% return.
Does The Amex Platinum Have The Best Lounge Access Benefit
There are several premium credit cards nowadays that offer airport lounge access, though Id say no other card can compete with the Amex Platinum when it comes to this. Obviously theres no one size fits all card for lounge access, but at a minimum no other card is as well rounded as the Amex Platinum.
Like many cards, the Amex Platinum offers a Priority Pass membership, but what sets this card apart is everything beyond that. Unlike other cards, the Amex Platinum offers:
- Access to Amex Centurion Lounge access
- Access to Plaza Premium Lounges
- Access to Escape Lounges
There are no Chase or Citi cards that get you access to those lounges. Theres only one downside when it comes to Amex Platinums lounge benefits compared to those of the Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card , for example. The Chase Sapphire Preferreds Priority Pass membership gets you access to Priority Pass restaurants, while the Amex Platinums Priority Pass membership doesnt.

Shopping Credit: Get A $100 Annual Credit At Saks Fifth Ave
A few years back the American Express Platinum card rolled out $100 in credits on Saks Fifth Avenue purchases each calendar year. Its divvied up into two, $50 credits.
The first credit is available through June, while the second becomes available July through the end of the year. Unused credits dont roll over, so remember to use them or lose them. It appears that gift cards do not qualify to get reimbursed. After activating the credit through your Amex Platinum benefits tab, the credit should automatically apply.
What Credit Cards Give You Access To Delta Sky Club
Both the Platinum Card from American Express and the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card, as well as their business card equivalents, offer complimentary Delta Sky Club access. They both also offer access to The Centurion Lounge network, but only the Amex Platinum provides complimentary Priority Pass Select membership and access to over 1,300 worldwide lounges in the Priority Pass network. Select benefits require enrollment.

How Do I Access American Express Lounges
You must have an eligible American Express credit or charge card to enter these lounges, plus be departing on a flight from that airport the same day. Unlimited access to both Australian and overseas lounges is free for Platinum Card and Centurion card members, along with two guests. Simply flash your metal on arrival.
The Sydney and Melbourne lounges also offer two complimentary visits a year for other Australian Amex card members with the following cards:
- Family room in many locations
Centurion Lounges usually boast an elevated level of service and dining, including a la carte meals and an impressive drinks menu. You can access the lounge a maximum of three hours before your departing flight. This rule was recently put in place due to the increasing number of eligible card members.
Should You Get An Amex Card With Centurion Lounge Access
Fortunately, American Express cards that include access to Centurion Lounges offer an array of other benefits that add to the total package value. Not only can you earn American Express Membership Rewards on all your spending, but The Platinum Card® from American Express also gives you benefits like automatic elite hotel status, a fee credit for Global Entry or TSA Precheck®, credits for Uber rides and more.

Can You Get Lounge Access With The American Express Gold Card
The American Express® Gold Card doesnt come with complimentary lounge access.
If the steep annual fee for the Platinum Card® from American Express isnt worth it to you, but you still want occasional lounge access, the American Express® Green Card comes with $100 in yearly statement fee credits for LoungeBuddy, a program that lets you book lounge passes starting at $25.
Waitlist Procedure At Centurion Lounges
Amex says that it will adhere to guidance from state and local governments and health authorities and limit the capacity within each lounge. So, you may arrive at a Centurion Lounge that is at capacity. In this case, youll usually need to provide your name and phone number. Then youll get a text once its your turn to enter the lounge. For example, heres what the texts looked like for TPG senior news editor Clint Henderson back in June:
But I havent had to wait to enter a Centurion Lounge for the last few months. And when I asked other TPG staffers about their recent Centurion Lounge experiences, none reported facing a waitlist within the last month. However, of the five staffers I spoke with, two reported crowded Centurion Lounges. In fact, TPG director of travel and news content, Andrea M. Rotondo, said the DFW Centurion Lounge was so crowded during her visit that it was difficult to get two seats together.

Both Cards Have High Annual Fees
- Up to $240 in annual digital entertainment credits**
- Comprehensive airport lounge access
If you can make use of even a few Amex Platinum statement credits each year, you can manage to completely offset the card’s annual fee.
The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card‘s fee is $550 . It doesn’t have comparable annual credits, but the benefits like lounge access and upgrade priority make the fee worthwhile for some. If you’d otherwise have purchased a Delta Sky Club lounge membership, this card isn’t a bad deal.

I also have a TD Travel Visa Infinite. I don’t need to use either cc on the trip since I’m going to Cuba but I will bring whatever gets me in the lounge.
