What Do Flagged And Declined Mean In The World Of Credit
A declined credit card transaction means that something went wrong while your purchase was being processed and that the purchase couldnt be completed. You might be able to circumvent the issue by simply ensuring that you entered the correct information, such as your billing ZIP. If that doesnt work, there may be something else at the root of the problem, and you might not be able to use your credit card until its addressed.
Theres good news, though. In many cases, declined transactions are for your own protection, and thats where flagging comes into play.
Once a card is flagged, itll generally be declined indefinitely in order to prevent unauthorized purchases, though fixing the issue is often as simple as contacting your issuer to confirm that whatever behavior caused your card to be flagged was your own action.

What Happens If You Don’t Activate Your Card
If you don’t activate your new card, you will no longer have access to your account until you do, since your old credit card won’t work. That could mean that you would have problems with any recurring charges. Also, after a period of 45 to 60 days, your credit card issuer might contact you to check if you received your card, and you might need to apply again to start using your credit account again.

Youre Actually A Fraud Victim
In many cases, a declined transaction has a quick, simple fix. But remember that the safety measures that can lead to a flagged card are designed to protect you from the very real threats of identity theft and credit card fraud.
If your card information falls into the wrong hands, a fraudster may use it for nefarious purposes. Hopefully, though, this would trigger the aforementioned safety measures to help prevent criminals from racking up debt in your name.
If your card was declined because its flagged for fraud, your card issuer is already acting to protect you. It may have tried to contact you by phone, secure message to your online account, email, or regular mail.
In any case, you should contact your issuer as soon as you realize that your card is flagged for fraud. The credit card company will likely deactivate the card and send you a new one. You may have to dispute any fraudulent credit card charges as well, depending on how your issuer handles the situation. The major card networks have zero liability policies, but make sure to inform customer service as soon as you notice any signs of fraud.
In most simple cases of credit card fraud, youll be able to go about your typical credit card activity once youve received your replacement card. But resolving more complicated cases, or those that involve larger sums of money, may take a bit longer.
What Is A Credit Card Number
A credit card number is a unique number that helps identify your account and card. This number makes it possible for you to pay with the card and for money to be taken out of the right account.
Think about it similarly to your checking account number. Your personal checks are printed with a specific series of numbers. First, the routing number, which indicates which bank the check draws on. Next is the account number, which tells which account the money should come from.
Credit card numbers work the same way. Each part of that long number has a specific function. These are standardized by the International Organization for Standardization.

What To Do Before Your Credit Card Expires
You don’t have to do much. Your new credit card should automatically come from your issuer and arrive either a couple of weeks or a month before your card expires.
Note – If you don’t receive your new card in the mail two weeks before your card expires, be sure to call your credit card issuer and confirm that your card is in the mail. If you’ve moved recently and haven’t updated your address with the issuer, it might have been sent to the wrong place. Making sure that you get it on time before your old card expires can be critical if you regularly purchase things using your card.

How Interest Charges Are Applied To Your Credit Card
Interest is the money youll pay if you dont pay your credit card balance in full by the due date. Youll continue to pay interest until you pay your balance back in full.
Interest rates vary depending on your financial institution and the type of transaction. For example, you may pay 19% interest on regular purchases and 22% on cash advances or cash-like transactions. Rates for specialized and retail credit cards may be higher.
Your credit card statement and your credit card agreement must clearly indicate the interest rates you must pay.

Should I Close A Credit Card I Never Use
It may be okay to close an unused card if:
- Its not your oldest card account.
- Your overall credit utilization rate wont go over 30%.
- Theres no clear incentive to keep the card .
The incentive is the first thing to review. Consider why the card is never used and whether theres enough reason to keep it open. Is there cash-back potential to be taken advantage of? Are there travel points still unused? If the answer is no and theres no major risk to a credit score, you can safely shut it down.
Credit cards should be acquired strategically. Try switching to a new card offering a better incentive to use it like a sizable welcome bonus or an introductory 0% APR. Other benefits to using credit cards for everyday purchases include better fraud protection and security, no fees on international purchases, car rental or travel insurance and more.
Your Account May Get Closed
Cardholders with unused credit cards often wont pay attention to cards, billing statements or notifications. This is usually fine when theres no balance to pay off, but after a long period of inactivity a card issuer may close a credit card account. The exact length of time varies among issuers. Contact your card issuer to find out when they will deactivate your account if it isnt being used.
Card issuers are not required to give notice of a looming deactivation. They may give cardholders the opportunity to maintain an account before a strict deadline, but it isnt required. One purchase using the card should be enough to keep the account alive.
For some, a closed account wont mean much. But for those who have low overall credit limits, a closed account could have a negative impact on credit scores.
Its a good idea to make sure you maintain your oldest lines of credit as the length of your credit history makes up 15% of your credit score. A closed account wont immediately impact the age of your credit because a closed account remains on your credit report for a period of time, but those accounts wont continue to age and will eventually fall off your .

What Discover Credit Cards Give The Best Rewards
While every Discover credit card offers unlimited rewards, the rewards rates can vary. There are three earning styles you can choose from:
- Fixed-rate rewards. The Discover Miles Card offers 1.5 Miles on each purchase.
- Tiered rewards. The Gas & Restaurants Card, Student Chrome Card, and Secured Credit Card offer 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter.* You earn 1% cash back on all other purchases.
- Rotating rewards. The Cash Back Card, Student Cash Back Card, and NHL® Card offer 5% cash back on everyday purchases at different places each quarter on up to $1,500 in purchases each quarter when you activate. You earn 1% cash back on other purchases.
A fixed-rate Discover rewards card might work best if you dont want to think about bonus categories when youre making a purchase, or if you tend to shop at different types of stores. But a card with tiered or quarterly bonus categories could help you earn more rewards if your purchases align with the bonus categories.
