Asking For Credit Card Information In Online Forms
Asking for card payment information online is a vital part of any online transactions journey. It is therefore commonplace, but surprisingly difficult to get right and make it as simple as possible for users.
The following provides some best practice and things to avoid when designing inputs to ask for credit card information. We will not cover trust symbols or signalling in this blog, or social proof, as they deserve articles that go into more depth. This will focus instead on the necessary inputs required to take card payment and how to make them as good as possible.
Primary Account Numbers Vs Secondary Account Numbers
Financial institutions and lenders may issue debit and credit cards may to a secondary user authorized by the primary account holder. If an account has a secondary account holder, cards may both use the primary account number. Some institutions, though, have a card-issuing policy that allows the secondary user to have a secondary account number.
Business credit card accounts operate a little differently. The primary account number for corporate credit cards doesn’t appear on any employees credit card. In this case, the credit card company issues each employee a card with separate, secondary account numbers. This makes it easier for companies to identify and track charges based on each employee’s card usage.
Charge Coins Medals And So On
Charge coins and other similar items were used from the late 19th century to the 1930s. They came in various shapes and sizes with materials made out of celluloid , copper, aluminum, steel, and other types of whitish metals. Each charge coin usually had a little hole, enabling it to be put in a key ring, like a key. These charge coins were usually given to customers who had charge accounts in department stores, hotels, and so on. A charge coin usually had the charge account number along with the merchant’s name and logo.
The charge coin offered a simple and fast way to copy a charge account number to the sales slip, by imprinting the coin onto the sales slip. This sped up the process of copying, previously done by handwriting. It also reduced the number of errors, by having a standardized form of numbers on the sales slip, instead of various kinds of handwriting style.
Because the customer’s name was not on the charge coin, almost anyone could use it. This sometimes led to a case of mistaken identity, either accidentally or intentionally, by acting on behalf of the charge account owner or out of malice to defraud both the charge account owner and the merchant. Beginning in the 1930s, merchants started to move from charge coins to the newer Charga-Plate.

Credit card companies such as Visa ask merchants to take precautions to protect customers primary account numbers. One such guideline is called PAN truncation. Visa says merchants are not required to store full account numbers. Doing so presents a security risk if there is a data breach. In the United States, a federal law called the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act of 2003 prohibits merchants from printing more than the last 5 digits of a cardholders account number on a receipt. Merchants are also prohibited from printing the cards expiration date.

These Numbers In More Detail
This is often referred to as the long number on the front of your credit card, which is usually 16 digits, but can be up to 19 digits in some instances. More formally, its known as a Permanent Account Number, or PAN.
Its not just a random number though. Your credit card number is unique to you and includes information used to identify your account, card and who its issued by.
The first digit indicates the provider:
- Mastercard numbers start with a 2 or 5.
- Visa card numbers start with a 4.
- American Express numbers start with a 3.
The first 6 digits help to identify the card issuer, known as an Issue Identifier Number or IIN.
All numbers following that relate specifically to your account, excluding the last one which is known as a check digit. This helps us verify that the full credit card number has been provided, and in the right order, anytime you make a purchase or payment.
This method for creating credit card numbers is used internationally, and was invented by IBM engineer Hans Peter Luhn in 1954.
The Meaning Behind Credit Card Numbers
The first number indicates which type of card it is. This is the Major Industry Identifier . Visa card numbers, for example, always start with a 4. Heres the breakdown:
- 3: American Express or cards under the Amex umbrella
- 4: Visa
- 5: Mastercard
- 6: Discover
That first digit along with the next five in the credit card number are called the Issuer Identification Number or Bank Identification Number. This identifies the credit card company and its network, similar to the bank routing number on a personal check. The ISO has issued a mandate to increase the IIN from six digits to eight digits to prevent a shortage.
The rest of the digits in your credit card number, with the exception of the final number, are related to your specific account. They arent necessarily the same numbers that appear in the account number on your statement. But this string of numbers is tied to your account so that payment processes use the right account when you make a credit or debit card payment.
The last digit of a credit card number is known as the check digit, determined by the Luhn algorithm. This number is applied in an unusual formula that helps determine if your is valid when you enter it. Using this formula, it takes only a fraction of a second for a computer to confirm that a is valid.

What Is A Credit Card
A credit card is a physical payment card that allows consumers to borrow money to make purchases that must then be repaid. Credit cards generate money for card issuers by charging customers interest fees on their card balances .
Beyond allowing cardholders to make purchases, credit cards often earn spending rewards and provide other benefits, from travel protections to concierge service. Theyre known for their security benefits, too, generally offering $0 fraud liability policies and stronger federal protections than debit cards.

How To Identify A Credit Card By The Account Number
When accepting credit card numbers over the phone from customers, you can easily identify the type of card without asking the customer. While each credit card has a unique string of numbers, in varying lengths, the first one or two digits will reveal the issuer of the card. You can also note other characteristics of the number to help you confirm the evidence.
Testing Credit Card Numbers
Heres how to apply the Luhn check to test whether or not a credit card number is valid:
- Step 1a. For a card number with an even number of digits , double alternating digits starting with the first digit in the sequence.
- Step 1b. For a card with an odd number of digits , double alternating digits starting with the second digit in the sequence.
- Step 2. If the doubling resulted in a number with two digits, add them together to get a single digit number
- Step 3.Now go back to the original credit number and replace the digits that you doubled with the new value either the doubled value, or the doubled value with the digits added together and add it all up.
- Step 4. Check to see if the sum is evenly divisible by 10 .
If the card number does not pass this check, then it is not a valid number. If, on the other hand, it does pass, then it may be a valid number with valid .

If your default dynamic 3D Secure rule is set to Prefer Not, then the following test cards will not trigger 3D Secure. You can either set your default dynamic 3D Secure rule to Always or force 3D Secure by passing executeThreeD in your API request.
To test how your integration handles different 3D Secure 2 authentication scenarios, use our test card numbers. When prompted for 3D Secure 2 text challenges, use the following credentials:
- For native mobile integrations, use password: 1234
- For web and mobile browser integrations, use password: password
When you make a payment request with these cards, you’ll receive the following result codes depending on your integration:
- RedirectShopper: You’ll receive this result code if you are using the Redirect authentication.
- IdentifyShopper: You’ll receive this result code if you are using the Native authentication.
- ChallengeShopper: You will get this result code after you submit the 3D Secure 2 device fingerprinting result in a Native authentication, unless you specify a frictionless flow.
To test the web-based flow where the device fingerprinting step is skipped , and you get a ChallengeShopperresultCodeimmediately after submitting the payment request, use the following card:

How To Protect Your Credit Card Numbers
Now that you know what all of these numbers mean, you need to know how best to protect them. First, you should always be careful when taking pictures that show your credit card number. Modern still and video cameras have very high resolution, and someone could enlarge a picture to read a credit card number, even if the card isn’t very big in the image. If you need to include your credit card in a picture, be sure to cover up as many digits as possible. Since the first six digits are not unique to your card, be sure to cover up the remaining nine or ten digits, if not all of them.
You should also avoid writing down your credit card numbers, as this information could be used fraudulently, just like your actual credit card. And if your credit card is lost or stolen, be sure to report it to your card issuer. Nearly all card issuers will send you a replacement card at no cost, and many will ship it for free via overnight mail if you request it.
Now you know what those long credit card numbers mean. The next step is protecting your card numbers and your cards so this information doesn’t fall into the wrong hands.
Customer Service Phone Line
The phone number on the back of your card is the best number to use for general customer service. If you have other services associated with your card that have their own direct phone numbers, like a personal concierge service, consider obtaining them all and writing them down or storing them in your phone. You can get help finding these numbers by calling the customer service line on the card.

As a followup to my recent post about what your credit card number means, I wanted to throw out a bit more credit card trivia and talk about how you can tell if a credit card number is valid.
As you may or may not aware, most credit card numbers are generated based on something known as the Luhn algorithm. It thus stands to reason that a credit card number is valid if it satisfies the Luhn check , which is a simple mathematical test that involves manipulating the credit card number, adding it up, and checking to see if its evenly divisible by ten.

What Is The Best Credit Card To Rebuild Credit
If youre looking to rebuild credit, the best card to get is a secured credit card. Your approval is guaranteed, but a security deposit is required to ensure bill payment. These cards are an excellent way to strengthen your credit, and if you continue to use it responsibly, your issuer will typically return your deposit and offer you an unsecured card within 12-18 months.
What Do The Rest Of The Numbers On The Credit Card Mean
Now that we know that a 4400 credit card is always a Visa card, we can move on to deciphering what the rest of the digits mean. It turns out that the 2nd through 6th digits indicate the card issuer and the type of credit card. Unfortunately, we only have 3 of these 5 numbers, the 400 in the 4400 four-digit number.
Luckily we can still use the 400 digits that we do have to find out who the credit card issuer is by using 4400. Interestingly, the first 4 or 6 numbers of a credit card are called the Issuer Identification Number , sometimes referred to as the Bank Identification Number . We can then use those digits of the card number to look up which bank or financial institution issued the card.

Bellamy used the term eleven times in this novel, although this referred to a card for spending a citizen’s dividend from the government, rather than borrowing, making it more similar to a debit card.
