Automated Dialing To Customers’ Phones
In August 2014, Capital One and three collection agencies entered into an agreement to pay $75.5 million to end a consolidated class action lawsuit pending in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois alleging that the companies used an automated dialer to call customers’ cellphones without consent, which is a violation of the Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991. It is notable that this legal action involved informational telephone calls, which are not subject to the “prior express written consent” requirements which have been in place for telemarketing calls since October 2013.
An American Express Centurion Card
Obsessed with image? Or maybe he just really needs airport lounge access and a concierge service.
One one hand, you know he is well off. But if he is actually willing to pay $5,000 to get a black card, and then an extra $2,500 per year to renew the Titanium rectangle of elite douchebaggery, you have to think twice about his personality . Im no relationship expert, but this kind of guy is the type to get divorced biannually.
For those of you who think there are perks to owning a black card that justify the expense, I beg to differ. If you spend a quarter million dollars per year, you probably have an assistant, and you probably fly business or first class. So whats the point of having a concierge or free lounge access?
Expansion Into Retail Banking
While many other monolines were acquired by larger, diverse banks, Capital One expanded into retail banking with a focus on subprime customers.
Capital One acquired New Orleans, Louisiana-based Hibernia National Bank for $4.9 billion in cash and stock in 2005 and acquired Melville, New York-based North Fork Bank for $13.2 billion in cash and stock in 2006, which reduced its dependency on credit cards from 90% to 55%.
In 2007, Capital One acquired NetSpend, a marketer of prepaid debit cards, for $700 million.
During the 2007 subprime mortgage financial crisis, Capital One closed its mortgage platform, GreenPoint Mortgage, due in part to investor pressures.
In 2008, Capital One received an investment of $3.56 billion from the United States Treasury as a result of the Troubled Asset Relief Program. On June 17, 2009, Capital One completed the repurchase of the stock the company issued to the U.S. Treasury paying a total of $3.67 billion, resulting in a profit of over $100 million to the U.S. Treasury.
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission criticized Capital One’s conduct during the crisis, claiming that they understated auto loan losses during the financial crisis of 20072008. In 2013, Capital One paid $3.5 million to settle the case, but was not required to directly address the allegations of wrongdoing.
In February 2009, Capital One acquired Chevy Chase Bank for $520 million in cash and stock.
In 2012, Capital One closed 41 branch locations.

How To Clean Credit Cards
If you’re concerned about germs and bacteria lurking on paper money, use credit or debit cards as much as possible for all purchases, since they are easy to clean and durable enough to clean daily, or even after every use. “Isopropyl alcohol is an effective and inexpensive way to clean credit cards,” says Bell. “Just add undiluted alcohol to a spray bottle, spray your cards, and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth .” For convenience, you can even keep a small, travel spray bottle in your purse or car for cleaning on-the-go. “Using hand sanitizer can be good for a quick fix, but can lead to a build-up of residue on the card due to the ingredients that help moisturize hands.”
How To Clean Your Wallet

Of course, you’ll also want to sanitize the container that holds these items, otherwise you risk cross-contamination. Aim to clean your wallet about once a week, says Bell. The best way to clean your wallet depend on the material. For leather, dilute a clear, gentle dish soap with with warm water, says Bell. Then, use a soft cloth to wipe down all the wallet folds. Wipe off the soap with a second clean, damp cloth and towel dry. For canvas wallets, hand washing works well, says Bell. Fill a sink or small bucket with lukewarm water and a gentle detergent, use a brush to scrub any build-up or stains, and let air dry.

How To Earn Capital One Miles
Earning miles on the Venture Rewards card is pretty straightforward, making the card useful to those who dont want to spend a lot of mental energy swapping credit cards in and out for different types of merchants. Youll earn 2 miles for every dollar you spend with the card on every transaction, which means youre getting 2 to 3.4 cents in travel for every dollar in purchases, with no annual cap.

How Do Digital Wallets Work
Most digital wallets come with an app you can add to your computer, phone, watch or other smart device.;
When youâre out shopping, you can pay with most wallets by holding your device near a terminal that has the contactless symbol .;

Best Whenyour Vendors Don’t Take Credit Cards
Discover Business Card
Why we like it: Discover will give you unlimited fee-free “purchase checks,” which allow you to write checks to vendors that don’t take credit cards. The checks will be subject to your normal APR.
Drawbacks: After the intro period, the APR is higher than average–it’s currently 13.99 percent. And while the card has a solid cash-back program, you’ll only get .25 percent back on the money you spend through purchase checks.

Capital One Savorone Cash Rewards Credit Card

Our pick for: Dining/entertainment rewards + no annual fee
Love the night life but dead-set against paying an annual fee? Consider the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card. The sign-up bonus is smaller than on the annual-fee version, too, but it’s still solid. Read our review.

Don’t Store Your Birth Certificate In Your Wallet
Your birth certificate, stolen, won’t get anyone very far. But if they have it in conjunction with other types of fraudulent IDs, security experts say, thieves could do some major damage to your finances.
Be especially vigilant on the rare occasions when you’re required to carry all of your most sensitive documents at the same time. One example of that is at a mortgage closing, when you might need to bring your birth certificate, Social Security card and passport. Don’t let them out of your sight, and take them straight home before you celebrate that closing. It’s not a good idea to leave them in your car.

- Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Card; this card has a $75 annual fee, and offers virtually the same perks as the business version of the card
I was prepared to dump both of these cards when the annual fees come due since I live in South Florida . However, with American and Alaska cooperating more closely, and Alaska now being in oneworld, I could see these becoming more useful again.
What I Look For In Credit Cards
For me, there are three things I look for when applying for credit cards:
- ; often the introductory bonuses on cards are;compelling, and enough reason to pick up a new card
- ; there are some cards you have because they help you maximize the points you earn for everyday spending
- some cards are worth holding onto even if you dont plan on putting much spending on them, because they offer things like elite status, annual free nights, etc.

What Is What’s In Your Wallet
“What’s in your wallet?” is a popular tagline from an advertising campaign for Capital One. Capital One is a bank holding company that specializes in credit cards and loans. The tagline is most often used in association with the company’s credit card products.
Capital One was incorporated in 1994 and has its headquarters in Richmond, Virginia. It was founded by Nigel Morris and Richard Fairbank. Fairbank is the current president, chairman and chief executive officer as of December of 2014.
The company has a successful ad campaign for its credit card line, touting the phrase “What’s in your wallet?” to catch the attention of potential customers. In 2012, some Capital One credit card holders may have found a bit more cash in their wallets. Two million customers were refunded a total lump sum of $150 million that year. This was in answer to a lawsuit regarding accusations of deceptive marketing practices on behalf of the company.
Despite the lawsuit, Capital One has had continued success. In 2013, the company showed a revenue of $24.176 billion and a total net income of $4.159 billion, both of which were increases over the previous year. As of May 2014, Capital One employs approximately 41,000 people and has divisions in both Canada and the United Kingdom.

Don’t Carry Spare Keys In Your Wallet
A lost wallet is bad enough. A lost wallet containing your spare house key along with your ID that shows your home address is an invitation for real-world thieves to easily break into your home. Security experts say don’t put your property, and your family, at risk.
The best move is to keep your spare key with a relative or friend. If you’re ever locked out, it may take a little bit longer to retrieve your backup key, but that’s a relatively minor inconvenience.
Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card

Finally, we reach the least used card still in Clarks wallet.
The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card is in his wallet because hes a frequent Southwest customer who enjoys the benefits of the Companion Pass benefit during a normal travel year.
The combination of his number of flights and his charge volume with the card has allowed his wife to travel with him wherever he goes on Southewest free of charge. This has been the case for 17 consecutive years.
It is GREAT, Clark says of the Companion Pass. When were traveling together I NEVER have to pay for her ticket.
However, Clark says he now uses this card almost never because hes able to achieve Companion Pass status through the use of a corporate Southwest credit card that he recently added for business expenses.
Clark says he keeps this card active to buy plane tickets for his family members during his frequent travels.
He also cautions against paying an annual fee for a travel card like this one unless you have enough travel volume to justify it.

Don’t Keep Gift Cards In Your Wallet
Many of us carry gift cards in our wallets just in case we happen to end up in the retailer or restaurant that the card is good for. That’s not such a great idea.
Retailers don’t ask for ID when using gift cards, after all, because your name isn’t on them . That means anyone who rifles through your lost wallet can redeem those gift cards same as cash — no questions asked. The smarter way to use them is to leave them at home until you know for sure you are headed to that destination where you can use those gift cards. Or redeem them online.
