This only applies if youre not at home, but still in the U.S. or Canada. And services that are covered include a dead battery, flat tire, running out of gas, towing and lockout assistance.

Our take

The Sapphire Reserve is stocked with top-notch travel coverages, like trip delay and lost/delayed baggage insurance. And this perk is minor in comparison, but if having it gets you to skip renewing your AAA membership that could save you $59 or more right there. Its also something that separates the Reserve from other premium cards, like the Citi Prestige® Card, which currently doesnt offer any travel insurance perks.

Legit Ways To Get Cheap Roadside Assistance

by Lauren Bennett – Verified & Updated February 7, 2022

Roadside assistance, whether you get it for free or cheap, is a great plan to have for drivers especially for those with older used cars or vehicle more prone to breaking down, but even new cars can get flat tires or run into other issues.

Whether you get a flat tire or just break down, getting stuck at the side of the road is just no fun, not to mention it is a road safety hazard. Having roadside assistance can not only make situations like getting a flat tire a lot less stressful, but it can save you money if you choose an affordable plan.

The best roadside assistance plans are from companies such as Nationwide, Progressive and Allstate, but they arent the only ones.

There are cheap roadside assistance plans out there and, in some cases, you may be able to get it for free.

Services offered will vary depending on the plan you have. Generally, it includes things like:

  • Fuel delivery
  • Changing flat tires or airing your tires for free
  • Locksmith services
  • Battery jump-start
  • So, this involves pulling a car with a chain or a rope if its stuck in snow, ice, or mud, for example.

How Does Roadside Assistance Pricing Work

Pricing for your roadside assistance network benefits depends on your card.

You might only have to pay a flat fee for each roadside service you need. But there can be additional fees in some situations, like if your car needs to be towed more than five miles or if it needs to be winched out of a ditch.

The fees for some services might be pre-negotiated by your card issuer. Or the prices for each service might be set by the actual service provider.

Typically, roadside assistance fees can be billed directly to your Capital One card to make the entire process easier. When you have a roadside emergency, the last thing you need is another bill to keep track of.

What Does Credit Card Roadside Assistance Cover

Best credit cards in Canada with free roadside assistance 2020

Every rewards credit card might have a slightly different policy, but you can expect your benefits to cover the following events:

    • Tow to the nearest repair shop or desired location
    • Winching
    • Replace a flat tire
    • Two gallons of gas

Your car insurance policy or AAA membership might offer similar benefits, but you usually need to pay an additional monthly fee. If your credit card already includes these benefits, why pay more for your car insurance?

How To Decide If Roadside Assistance Is Worth It

Roadside assistance can come in handy, regardless of your vehicle’s age. While older cars are more likely to need repairs, common issues such as a flat tire, dead battery, empty gas tank or lock-out can happen to anyone.

Here are some additional pros and cons to consider when deciding if you should buy coverage:

Pros and Cons of Roadside Assistance Coverage
    Pros Cons
    • You may be able to call for help 24/7 if you need assistance, regardless of your location.
    • You could save a significant amount on services like towing and locksmith services.
    • You won’t have to rely on strangers to get your car back on the road if you run into mechanical issues.
    • Roadside assistance can be costly unless you purchase coverage through your insurance provider.
    • Some coverage providers limit the number of service calls you can place each year.
    • You may not be eligible for services if the vehicle that needs servicing is not covered under the plan.

Ultimately, you want to weigh the features and benefits of each plan with the cost to determine if roadside assistance is a good fit. If you decide to buy coverage through your insurance provider, it should only increase your premiums by a small amount. But if you buy a plan from an auto club, you’ll want to budget between $60 and $135, depending on the level of coverage you’re seeking.

Roadside Benefits Provided By Other Credit Cards

Although roadside assistance is no longer a benefit on most Citi and American Express cards, some other cards still offer roadside assistance as a benefit. However, many only help with arranging services that you need to pay for yourself. This benefit can still be valuable since it saves you from searching for a provider on your own. But, you might end up with a hefty bill.

To determine whether your card provides roadside benefits, check your guide to benefits or call the number on the back of your card.

How Does Credit Card Roadside Assistance Compare To Aaa

I keep a AAA membership for the discounts and benefits, especially at hotels and amusement parks. So, I typically call AAA if I need roadside assistance. But if you only maintain your AAA membership for roadside assistance, it may not be as necessary as youd previously assumed. This is especially true if you have the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which offers complimentary roadside assistance up to $50 four times each year.

Some other credit cards including all Visa cards provide paid access to roadside assistance. This access may be adequate if you dont utilize the benefit too frequently. Just remember that the roadside assistance benefit supplied by some credit cards technically requires you to be traveling away from home. So, the benefit might not apply if your car battery goes dead in your driveway.

    What Is Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance sometimes called roadside dispatch can refer to a wide variety of services to help drivers out in a pinch. From lockout service to towing, the term serves as an umbrella for any roadside help you might need.

In the case of credit card benefits, roadside dispatch typically refers to a 24/7 customer service line that can serve as a go-between from the customer to the service provider. Rather than leave cardholders to search for a tow company or locksmith themselves, roadside assistance services send out a third party on behalf of the customer to save you a step.

Which Insurance Companies Offer Roadside Assistance

Using Your Roadside Assistance Benefit | Understanding This Useful Credit Card Perk

Most auto insurance companies offer roadside assistance as a policy add-on, but benefits will vary. Below, we outline programs that are offered through the largest auto insurance companies.

All State Farm drivers can use the company’s roadside assistance feature. If you didn’t add the benefit to your policy, you’ll just pay a fee for services you use. The price is usually less than market rates. State Farm’s emergency roadside service includes all the basic features, but mechanical and locksmith labor is limited to one hour. The time limit should be enough to resolve most issues, though.

The big selling point of Geico’s roadside assistance add-on is that you can request help through Geico’s mobile app rather than calling the company. You can save your policy information in the app and let the company locate you with GPS. Geico’s location tracking can be helpful if you ever find yourself stranded without a sense of where you are.

Allstate offers three tiers of service by far the most options when it comes to roadside assistance. The third tier, Allstate Motor Club, offers the most features and can also be purchased as a stand-alone service. If you’re interested in benefits beyond towing and tire changes, Allstate’s Motor Club is a great choice as it provides trip interruption coverage and a personal concierge.
