FULL REVIEW: Alaska Airlines Credit Card | Make Money With Travel Credit Cards

If you enjoy going out to restaurants and cafes, youll want to join the Mileage Plan Dining program. More than 10,000 U.S. restaurants participate in this free dining rewards program that lets you earn Alaska miles when dining out.

How does it work? Just link a credit card to your account. Then, earn 1x to 5x miles per $1 on your bill, which includes everything: food, beverages, and even the tax and tip!

Youll earn 3 points per dollar spent if you opt into emails, and youll earn 5 points per dollar when you reach VIP status after dining out 11 times with Mileage Plan Dining. Unfortunately, youll earn just 1 point per dollar if you opt out of emails from Mileage Plan dining.

To get the most out of each purchase, link a credit card that earns extra miles on dining purchases. One of our favorites is the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card that earns 5x points on travel purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 3x points on dining, and 2x points on all other travel purchases plus a host of other benefits.

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Credit Card

The Alaska Airlines press release didnt just announce credit card spending bonuses, it also mentioned that Alaska Airlines will also be extending their bonus mile promotion. Previously, Alaska Airlines was offering a 50% bonus on all elite miles flown through the end of May. Now, that promotion has been extended until the end of the year.

Starting today, Alaska Airlines customers and members of the award-winning Mileage Plan have three new promotions to enjoy. In addition to guaranteeing 2020 elite status through 2021, the airline is extending a 50% bonus of elite qualifying miles for flights taken through the end of the year. Review: Is The Alaska Airlines Business Credit Card The Best Card For You

If you like to fly Alaska Airlines and have a small business, the Alaska Airlines Business Credit Card is a great complement to both. There aren’t as many ways to earn Alaska miles as other airlines, and Alaska is one of the few airlines with no bank transfer partners, so this card is a good way to get more Alaska miles in your account.

For a limited time, the card is offering its highest-ever bonus of 60,000 bonus miles plus Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare from $121 after spending $3,000 or more within 90 days from account opening. The companion ticket is usually awarded after your account anniversary, but here it’s included as part of the welcome offer. The card has an annual fee of $50 per company and $25 per card .

Because Alaska is part of the Oneworld alliance and maintains its own relationship with several global airlines, Alaska miles are among the most valuable for domestic and international travel awards. For Alaska flyers, it’s one of the last airlines that award bonus miles based on mileage flown instead of a revenue-based model.

For these reasons, Alaska has a loyal fan base and those who like Alaska will go out of their way to fly their routes. Between the friendly service, rewarding elite status, and valuable miles, there’s a lot to like about the airline, especially if their destinations work with your travel plans.

New Credit Card Holders May Be Eligible

If you dont have an Alaska Airlines Credit Card, no worries. There is still time to take part in this promotion. You could apply today and get your credit card in the next 1-2 weeks and still have 4-6 weeks to spend your way to elite status. New Alaska Airlines Credit Card holders are eligible for up to 65,000 bonus miles! These miles are redeemable and do not qualify for elite status. However, you still can earn the 20,000 elite miles through spending too! New applicants will earn 40,000 miles for spending $2,000 on the card in the first 90 days and then an additional 25,000 miles for spending $8,000 or more in the first 180 days. If youre spending towards the elite miles, you should easily earn the full 65,000 redeemable mile bonus.

Where The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Credit Card Falls Short

Alaska Airlines Credit Card – How to Make Money With Travel Cards

Weak ongoing rewards

The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card offers bonus rewards on purchases made with Alaska Airlines, but not on other categories, such as dining or gas. Among airline cards, such a set-up used to be common, but that’s starting to change. Consider the United Explorer Card, for example, which offers bonus rewards on purchases from United Airlines, restaurants, and hotels.

Want to earn high flat-rate rewards on everything? The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card might be a good choice. It earns 2 miles per dollar spent on all purchases, worth 1 cent each when redeemed as credit toward travel purchases. With this card, you can apply for TSA Precheck or Global Entry and get reimbursed for the application fee when you pay with your card. The card also comes with a big sign-up bonus: Enjoy a one-time bonus of 60,000 miles once you spend $3,000 on purchases within 3 months from account opening. The annual fee is $95.

Side Benefits aren’t flexible

The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card offers generous perks for traveling with companions and checking bags, but maybe those benefits aren’t a good fit for you. A card with flexible travel credits instead might be a better match. Try the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card instead, which carries an annual fee of $95.

Shop Through The Mileage Plan Shopping Portal

If you shop online frequently, you can rack up a ton of Alaska miles by shopping through the Mileage Plan shopping portal.

This portal gives you miles for every dollar you spend at one of Alaskas participating merchants including the Apple Store, Bed Bath and Beyond, Staples, and hundreds of others.

The number of miles youll earn per dollar fluctuates regularly, but most merchants offer somewhere between 1 and 4 miles per dollar spent.

Additionally, the portal offers frequent bonuses during holidays that will give you extra miles for spending a specific amount of money. For example, a holiday bonus offered 1,500 bonus miles after spending $500 in combined purchases during the promotional period.

Using the Mileage Plan shopping portal is simple. Just head over to the portal, sign in using your Alaska Airlines credentials, and search for your merchant of choice to see how many miles its offering per dollar spent. Then once youre ready to shop, click the Shop Now button to be redirected to the merchant and you can shop as you normally would.

Hot Tip: Use CashBack Monitor to check rates for specific merchants on all major airline shopping portals at once this will help you maximize points earning for all of your online purchases.

Points will be credited to your account between 5 to 15 days from purchase. Just note that if you return a purchase, the miles will be debited from your account.

What Does Mvp Status Get You

Alaska MVP is the lowest status tier in the program. While you dont get many of the perks offered at the higher levels, Alaska MVP status still provides some solid benefits. And Alaska MileagePlus MVP members get 50% more miles when they book Alaska Airlines flights.

On top of that, youll get various benefits that enrich your flying experience. One of the most exciting perks at the MVP level may be the first-class and premium-class upgrades. These upgrades can occur automatically when you book your flight, but there may be restrictions.

Another excellent feature that you get with all MVP levels is Elite Leave for new parents. If youre pregnant or a new parent and are putting travel on hold, you can apply to get your status extended for another year.

Alaskas Famous Companion Fare: How To Use It

This card’s other significant benefit is the annual Coach Companion Fare, which costs $121 per year. When flying on Alaska Airlines, you can bring a travel companion along with no blackout dates. This benefit has a potential value of hundreds of dollars, easily compensating for the cards $75 annual fee. Companion tickets, as they are commonly known, are a coveted benefit for those who frequently travel with companions.

Depending on your travel, Alaskas Famous Companion Fare can be very valuable, though the value is hard to estimate. Essentially, the more expensive the itinerary, the greater the discount this benefit will provide.

Annual Companion Fare Certificate

Best Travel Credit Cards

Every year on your account anniversary, you’ll receive a companion fare certificate that allows a companion to fly with you from $121 . This certificate is added to your account automatically, and you can use it on any Alaska Airlines flight that you book through alaskaair.com.

Alaska Makes It Easier To Requalify

Alaska Airlines Credit Card Review 2021

The Fast Track to Status promotion awards 50% bonus elite qualifying miles on all Alaska Airlines-operated flights. This promotion was set to end on Sept. 30, 2021, although Alaska had extended it numerous times since it initially launched in June 2020. Now, the promotion will end on Dec. 31, 2021.

Both current elites and non-elite members are eligible for this promotion and no registration is required. The 50% bonus does not apply to partner flights, even if theyre booked on an Alaska ticket.

Further, the email also states that Alaska will extend elite status for those who dont requalify by the end of the year. Details are scarce, but the email states that Alaska will extend status through Apr. 30, 2022. Then, elites can fly a minimum number of miles January through April to maintain their status.

The email doesnt say how much elites who dont requalify by the end of 2021 will need to fly in early 2022 to maintain their status. But we expect it to be a significantly lower amount when compared to standard qualification requirements. According to the email, more information will come.

    Discounted Alaska Lounge Access

For having the Alaska Airlines Business Card you receive a 50% discount on Alaska Lounge day passes. These ordinarily cost $50, but with this perk that cost is brought down to $25. Thats a price at which I think buying lounge access could make a lot of sense, as youll probably pay more than that for a couple of drinks in the terminal.

If youre an occasional Alaska Airlines flyer, this is a more economical option for lounge access than outright buying an Alaska Lounge membership.

Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Credit Card Transfer Partners

if you want the flexibility of using your miles with different airlines, you’re in luck with the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card. You can choose to redeem your Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles for travel on Alaska Airlines or one of their 18 travel partners.

Booking award flights or transferring miles is simple, and you can do so by visiting AlaskaAir.com or calling Alaska Airlines reservations at 1-800-252-7522.
