Should I Apply For Credit Card Through Credit Karma

Does Credit Karma Keep My Information Safe

How People Get an 800 CREDIT SCORE using Credit Karma

You’ll input your name, birthday, address, and the final four digits of your social security number. In rare cases, you may need to provide your entire social security number.

While Credit Karma can track inquiries into your personal information, it’s smart to be your own watchdog. When you get a credit report, check it for inaccuracies in your payment history, incorrect balances, or accounts that you never created.

You can rest assured that Credit Karma won’t be putting your personal data out there. In other words, third parties won’t have access to it. The company makes a point of protecting your identity from all threats.

Additionally, Credit Karma uses the latest encryption and security. This keeps website hackers from being able to obtain your personal information.

Need More Credit Offerings

I LOVE Credit Karma! I only wish they had more diverse credit card option. As my credit score gets better, I keep getting offers from Capital One. I have two cards already and when I accepted an offer they recently sent me, I was declined based on having too many Capital One cards. I have no problems with my Capital One cards, the app makes it so easy to manage and pay my balances. The in app reviews seem to be spot on so make sure you take the time to read them before accepting offers. They seem to be partnered with a company that offers credit but the reviews are pretty much consumer beware Im glad to have Capital One in my wallet so if your looking for a go to card with awesome reviews on rebuilding your credit, they are a good place to start. I recently also started receiving auto financing offers from a company that basically sells their cars via a vending machine concept. The reviews are absolutely horrible and the cars are severely overpriced. It is my opinion that some partnerships are just not a good fit for Credit Karma. Someone with bad credit would have a better chance of getting a better deal at a lemon lot or car auction. Credit Karma has helped me set reachable credit goals. I just wish there were better in app credit offerings as ones scores improve.

Is Credit Karma Safe

As mentioned above, they dont ask for a credit card number, and you only have to enter the last four digits of your social security number to get started. Furthermore, even that information isnt stored permanently, so theres no risk of someone hacking in and stealing part of your social security number.

Decide What You Want From A Credit Card

Before choosing a credit card to apply for, it helps to know your needs and what you intend to use your credit card for.

Do you want to open a credit card so you can start building credit? Or perhaps you already have excellent credit and you want to be rewarded for your purchases?

If youre looking to earn credit card rewards, its helpful to evaluate where you spend the most money. There are cards that give higher rewards for spending at grocery stores, gas stations, restaurants, as well as on travel. When you know where you spend the most, you can pick a card that gives extra rewards for that type of spending.

Perhaps youre looking for a credit card with specific features or benefits. When you know what you want to get out of a card, you can narrow down what kind of card youre looking for.

    Penalties For A Missed Payment

If you fail to pay the minimum due or miss your due date, youll be considered late on your payment. While your credit generally wont be affected by a payment thats less than 30 days late, you may be charged a late fee.

You can potentially be charged up to $27 the first time youre late and up to $38 for any additional late payments you make within the next six billing cycles. You may also trigger a penalty interest rate, which could be as high as 29.99%.

    What Is Credit Karma Tax

When most people think of Credit Karma, it is because of their credit score monitoring and improvement tools. Many people have never heard of Credit Karma tax until they get in and start using the site.

Like their credit scoring tools, Credit Karma tax is free to use. Like you would expect, the service is used to help you to prepare your taxes.

As you might expect, preparing a Credit Karma tax return probably would not be the best for folks who have complicated taxes. Their tax review would be more appropriate for those who have a fairly straightforward tax situation.

With any free software, its not going to be best for everyone, but the tax software can satisfy a significant number of people.

One thing worth noting is that their tax program cannot be used everywhere. There are forty states as well as DC that allow their service.

    Compare Credit Cards

To see how many credit cards youve opened, I recommend using myBankrate its free and easy. First, youll need a Credit Karma account. Its free to create and only takes about two minutes. During sign-up, theyll ask you a few questions to confirm your identity.

Step 1. Log in to Credit Karma

After creating an account, youll need to log in click the Log in button.

Youll need to click the drop-down function on each account to see the accounts open date thats the date youll need to check to calculate your 5/24 count.

Keep in mind, if youve opened a card in the last ~30 days, it may not show up on your credit report, so you will need to add that to the count yourself. If you have not canceled any cards in the past 24 months, youre all done at this point. But if you have, youll want to follow the next step to make sure youre counting all of the cards necessary.

    Access Your Credit Scores

The most prominent scoring models are FICO score and VantageScore.

You can pay to get your FICO score from MyFICO.com, but if you already have a credit card account, you may also already have access to free FICO scores on your monthly statement or online account. And Discover, an issuer of credit cards, offers a free FICO score to everybody, even if youre not a customer.

Some personal finance websites, including NerdWallet, offer a free credit score from VantageScore. VantageScores and FICO scores track similarly because both weigh much the same factors and use the same data from the credit bureaus.

Your credit scores will rise if you:

    • Make payments on time.

    • Keep balances low on existing credit cards.

    • Avoid new debt.

A full 30% of your credit score is determined by how much you owe. High credit card balances can be especially damaging. Your your balance divided by your credit limit should be below 30% on each credit card. For example, if you have a credit limit of $10,000, it’s recommended to keep the balance below $3,000.

Lower your credit utilization by creating a plan to pay down an existing balance as quickly as possible. And consider paying off purchases more than once a month to keep your balance lower throughout the month.

    How Credit Scores Are Determined

Information found in your credit report is used to determine your credit scores, which might include the following:

    • Your history of debt payments
    • Hard inquiries6 on your credit score from new credit applications
    • The amount of debt you currently have on your credit accounts
    • The age of your credit accounts
    • The amount and type of loan accounts you have open
    • The percentage of available credit you’ve utilized
    • If and when you had a foreclosure, declared bankruptcy, or had debt sent to collections

It’s common to see varying credit scores when you look at different sources. Equifax, TransUnion, Credit Karma, Borrowell: Should you trust your credit score? (Marketplace)

Credit Karma updates its scores once per week. For most people, that’s plenty, but if youre planning to apply for in the near future, you may need a more timely update.

Although VantageScore’s system is accurate, its not the industry standard. Credit Karma works fine for the average consumer, but the companies that will approve or deny your application are more likely to look at your FICO score.

    What Is Credit Karma Savings

Another feature the company offers is whats called Credit Karma Savings or their trademarked name, Credit Karma Money. Like it sounds, the company offers a high-yielding saving account where you can deposit your money.

If you are risk-averse and dont want to put your money in places where you could lose some of it, a savings account is usually an excellent choice.

Like traditional savings accounts, high-yield savings plans are insured for up to $250,000. A Credit Karma account can be an excellent enhancement to improve your financial situation.

Approval Odds Are An Estimate Not A Guarantee

For these reasons, Credit Karma emphasizes that its Approval Odds are merely an estimate to help you understand where you stand at any given time. Before applying for a credit card, you should thoroughly review your credit report to see how you might be able to improve your score, regardless of your Approval Odds.

If you apply for a credit card based on Credit Karmas Approval Odds and are declined, Credit Karma recommends that you check your credit report to make sure your information is correct. If you find any errors, you need to dispute them with the credit reporting agencies.

You should also check to see if youre using less than 30 percent of your available credit. If youre using a much higher percentage, a lender might consider you a bigger risk. If you think you have a strong case, you can call the credit card issuer for reconsideration.
