Who Should Get The American Express Green Card

American Express Green Card Review 2020 (AmEx Green Card ...

The American Express Green Card is the ideal choice for those who do the bulk of their spending on travel of all types, as well as at restaurants across the globe. Unlike airline- or hotel-branded travel , the Amex Green Card provides triple points on all kinds of vacation-related purchases from rideshares and taxis to flights and accommodations. The full earning rate is 3X points on eligible travel and transit purchases, and at restaurants worldwide and 1X points on all other purchases.

That said, the American Express Green Card isn’t a super-premium travel card. While those come with lots of benefits, they can also come with annual fees topping $400. That just means the Amex Green Card is a better choice for more budget-conscious travelers who don’t necessarily fly often enough to justify paying a high fee to get luxury lounge access and statement credits that costlier cards tend to provide.

The American Express Green Card could also be worth it for you if you’re hoping to bypass long lines at security with CLEAR membership or if you want to gain occasional lounge access through LoungeBuddy, as statement credits for purchasing both of these services would more than cover the Amex Green Card’s $0 annual fee.

Value Of Amex Green Card Benefits

Is the Amex Green Card worth the annual fee?

If you want to recoup the $150 annual fee, you wont need to do much work since there are two statement credit offers that are worth up to $200 each calendar year. Here are the perks:

  • Up to $100 per year in CLEAR® membership credits:CLEAR acts similar to TSA PreCheck by allowing you to get through security faster at select airports. It also works at select stadiums nationwide. The $100 credit offsets CLEAR’s annual $179 membership cost.
  • Up to $100 per year in LoungeBuddy credits: LoungeBuddy allows you to access any of the airport lounges in its network without a membership, elite status or first class ticket. Simply select an eligible lounge at the airport youll be at, then pay the applicable entry fee which starts at $25.

You can more than offset the annual fee every year through these two benefits that are worth $200.

If you dont plan to maximize these benefits, youd need to rely on the rewards program to recoup the annual fee. The quickest way to earn $150 in rewards is to spend $5,000 in the 3X categories: eligible travel, transit and restaurants worldwide. Otherwise, youd need to spend up to $15,000 every year across the 3X categories and on all other eligible spending.

By using the Amex Green card, the average consumer can earn $640 in rewards the first year and $390 in subsequent years. This takes into consideration the annual fee and uses a sample annual budget provided by location intelligence firm Esri. Read more about our methodology.

The American Express® Green Card was revamped by the issuer in October 2019 with new benefits and features to suit consumers with a traveling lifestyle. The card was originally introduced 50 years ago, and remained largely unchanged until its relaunch. The updated card is much more competitive than previous, with benefits like travel insurance, broad spending categories and annual fee credits for CLEAR membership.

Other Cards Offer More Useful Travel Credits

A Clear credit may be useful in specific situations, especially as a supplement to TSA Precheck or Global Entry. But it isn’t really a substitute for those programs. Unlike Clear, which is a private company, TSA Precheck and Global Entry are administered by the federal government and are in wide use across the country. They’re also significantly cheaper: The application fee for TSA Precheck is $85 for Global Entry, it’s $100. What’s more, your status with those federal programs lasts for five years not just one and many travel credit cards with less hefty annual fees will cover the full application cost for you.

The LoungeBuddy credit is also a nice touch and potentially more useful, particularly if you don’t have any other cards that provide lounge access. But while the service advertises lounge access for as low as $25 per visit, many lounges on the platform will end up costing you significantly more than that. Also be aware that some travel credit cards with lower annual fees already offer some version of airport lounge access.

Alternatives To The Amex Business Green Card

As with any credit card offer, there are a couple of drawbacks to the Amex Business Green card.

First, you must make your payments in full every month. This is different from with The Blue Business Plus Credit Card from American Express, which allows you to spread payments over time .

Another caveat is the lack of bonus earnings categories. Basically, you earn 1 point per $1 spent with the card with no extra points for purchases at office supply stores, restaurants, or other select categories.

If you would like to earn more for your spending in certain categories, you may prefer The American Express® Business Gold Card.

The Amex Business Gold card offers 5 bonus categories related to business spending: airfare, select U.S. advertising, U.S. gas stations, U.S. shipping, and select U.S. computer services. Earn 3x points for the category you choose and 2x points for the rest.

The Blue Business Plus card has also updated its earning rate, and now earns 2x points on all purchases on the first $50,000 each year, after which it will earn 1x points.

Fees are another drawback of the card. There is a 2.7% foreign transaction fee on any purchases made while abroad.

If you and your employees regularly travel outside the country, you may find more value in a credit card without foreign transaction fees, such as The Plum Card® from American Express.

How Does The Green From Amex Compare

The American Express Green card is a competitive mid-tier card now that it features strong earning rates and useful benefits. If youre looking for a starter travel card with a modest annual fee, your best choices will likely be the Green from Amex, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card and the Citi Premier® Card. Lets compare these three cards head to head.

American Express Green
Baggage insurance, secondary car rental coverage

Trip delay coverage starting Jan. 1, 2020, on round-trip flights

Trip delay coverage, baggage delay coverage, trip cancellation/interruption insurance, primary car rental coverage, lost luggage insurance, travel accident insurance None

As you can see, the Green from Amex has the highest annual fee of the three cards, but its also the only card of the three to offer annual statement credits and these statement credits can more than offset the annual fee. The American Express Green Card also has the best earning rates for travel and restaurants, and is the only card of the three to offer return protection.
