Is Southwest Airlines Credit Card Worth It

Don't Miss

The Southwest Priority Or Plus Cards Might Suit You Better

Southwest Credit Card Review | Why Millennials LUV It!

Chase offers identical welcome bonuses on the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card and Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card.

Of the three Southwest personal cards, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card is actually my favorite. Even though it has the highest annual fee , if you fly Southwest a lot you can actually get a value worth much more than the yearly cost from goodies like an annual $75 Southwest credit, four upgraded boardings a year, and 7,500 Southwest points each card anniversary. Heres more about the Chase Southwest Prioritys benefits and perks and our review of the Southwest Priority card.

With the lowest annual fee , the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card might be a better fit if you just want the lowest cash outlay in the first year. It comes with fewer perks, like 3,000 points on your card anniversary , and it charges foreign transaction fees. So its not a good choice if you want a card you can use abroad. Heres Erins post about why the Southwest Plus benefits made it her top Southwest card pick. You can also read our full review of the Southwest Plus card.

Still having trouble deciding? Heres a chart summarizing what youll get with each personal Chase Southwest card:

Note: All of the Southwest cards are subject to the Chase 5/24 rule, which means if youve opened five or more cards in the past 24 months, you wont be approved.

This Card Is Best For

  • Seeks the recognition and perks of branded travel partner statusLoyalty Status Seeker
  • Travels outside of U.S. on occasion or frequentlyInternational Traveler

The least expensive of the airline’s three co-branded credit cards, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus is for Southwest customers who want to pay less for a card, and are prepared to get less from it as well.

After a first-year fee of $69, the cost of the card in subsequent years is a little easier to bear, thanks to the value of the card’s 3,000-point anniversary bonus. Thats less than the bonuses with the other Southwest cards, at least one of which offers more travel perks as well.

This card, though, better suits those who may not wish or need to pay more upfront for a card, especially if they’re unsure as to when they’ll redeem points for flights, and to where. Southwest flies to fewer countries than other major U.S. airlines. Its routes are primarily within the U.S. Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, and using points with its global partners yields much less value per point than if you redeem directly with Southwest.

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card: Adequate But Not Stellar

The Southwest Premier credit card is a bit of an in-betweener. Not quite as basic as the Plus card, but not as many benefits as the Priority credit card. As such, its benefits rarely make it the best card for anyone.

The Premier Card carries a $99 annual fee, but has few benefits above those that are offered with the Plus card. In particular, youll receive tier qualifying points based on your spending, similar to the Priority card above. The card will also waive foreign transaction fees when you make purchases with it internationally. But thats about it. You do receive an anniversary bonus, but its only 6,000 points . Your net card cost is $15.

While you could make the argument that the card is useful for people who want to accumulate tier qualifying points, if youre flying Southwest at all, you might as well get the Priority card, which not only has a lower net cost but also superior benefits.

Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card

This is one of two Southwest small business credit cards available.

  • 2x points on social media and search engine advertising, internet, cable, and phone services
  • 1x points on all other purchases

Cardholders also get unlimited tier qualifying points that can be earned toward A-List status. There is also a $500 annual fee credit for Rapid Rewards points transfers.

Additionally, get 25% back on inflight purchases.

This cards annual fee is $199.

Cardholders also get these perks:

  • 4 Upgraded Booking per year
  • Inflight WiFi credit
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit
  • 9,000 bonus Rapid Rewards points each cardholder anniversary
  • No foreign transaction fee

Qualifying for a business credit card is different than trying for a consumer credit card. As Chase reports your payment activity to the personal credit bureaus, you should have a personal credit score of at least 700 to try.

As the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Credit Card is a small business credit card, your business activity can help you qualify. Its possible to qualify as a sole proprietor or as an organized business such as an LLC.

New cardmembers can earn 80,000 bonus points after spending $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months of account opening.

Who Is This Card For

SouthWest Airlines Credit Card

The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card is ideal for regular Southwest flyers, as many of the perks are specific to the airline.

The Premier is also a good choice for those looking for a lower annual fee than the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card while still enjoying perks such as two annual EarlyBird check-ins, no foreign transaction fees and a 6,000-point card anniversary bonus. That said, if you do fly with Southwest frequently, you should consider that the higher-tier Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card does offer a higher anniversary bonus and more perks for flying.

But for more casual Southwest flyers, the Southwest Premier Card is a perfectly adequate option to supplement your other travel credit cards.

Do keep in mind that all of Southwests cobranded cards are beholden to Chases infamous 5/24 rule. If youve opened five or more new accounts over the past 24 months , youre likely to be denied for this card. Also, note that adding it to you wallet will count toward your 5/24 tally, because its a personal card. If you plan to apply for other Chase cards in the near future, make sure this card is worth the slot it will take up.

The Southwest Airlines Premier Business Credit Card: A Great Option For The Occasional Southwest User

The Southwest Premier Business Card is a great option for those travelers who want to take advantage of the cards benefits but only use Southwest as one of many airlines in their travel. The card has fewer benefits, but only comes with a $99 annual fee, so even if you use the card only infrequently, youll still get value out of it.

  • 2X points multiplier on Southwest purchases, as well as Southwest hotel and car rental partner purchases.
  • 6,000 bonus points on your card anniversary. Thats worth $84, so youre almost covering the entire annual fee on the card.
  • No foreign transaction fees. Flying internationally? Use your Southwest Premier Business card for purchases and you wont have to pay a foreign transaction fee.
  • Tier qualifying points. This card will also get you on your way toward Southwest tier status. For every $10,000 points that you spend, youll receive 1,500 tier qualifying points. This card also maxes out at $100,000 in annual spending.

Is It Hard To Get Approved For A Chase Southwest Airlines Credit Card

A Chase Southwest Airlines credit card is not hard to get if you have good or excellent credit. The higher your credit score, the better your chances are of getting approved for a Chase Southwest card. To increase your chances of getting a card, make sure to pay all your bills on time, keep your debt-to-income ratio low, and avoid applying for too many cards in a short time period.

Southwest Business Card: Is It Worth It

Among the four Southwest credit cards, the Performance Business card is the most expensive, and it is also the most loaded with benefits.

Remember that you dont necessarily have to be a business owner to apply for a business card. If you have a hobby that might turn into a business, or a side gig, you can often qualify for a business card.

The card will probably appeal most to a few different kinds of people.

  • First are those who can qualify for the card, want a bunch of frequent flyer miles and dont yet have Global Entry or TSA Precheck.
  • The second category is business owners who fly Southwest a lot and can benefit from the points bonuses on Southwest spending and online advertising.

On the other hand, if you dont live near an airport served by Southwest, or you dont travel much and dont plan to travel much, or you prefer the simplicity of cash back cards as opposed to frequent flyer cards, then this card probably isnt for you.

But if youre willing to spend a little extra up-front on the annual fee, you might find the new Performance Business card worth your while.

Capital One Venture Rewardscredit Card

Capital One® Venture Rewards was chosen as the best card for travel in 2018 by CNBC and with tons of benefits it offers it makes for a good pick for frequent travelers. A new card member on signup would be eligible for a one-time bonus of 60,000 miles after you have spent $3,000 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Having a co-branded credit card can limit your rewards to one brand. Whereas with a Venture Rewards card you can earn 2x miles per dollar without having to worry about the cap or expiry of rewards.

While most cards give you the option to book new travels with your miles, Venture Rewards has a feature called Purchase Eraser for the redemption of miles for previous travels. By going online to or calling the rewards center you can redeem your miles for the cost of a previous travel purchase made through another travel portal/agent. As far as you have paid for the transaction using a Capital One® rewards credit card, you will have 90 days to apply for the redemption from the date of purchase. Some of the categories where you can use Purchase Eraser for travel are airlines, hotels, car rentals, taxi cabs and much more.

The card does carry many travel protection benefits such as travel accident insurance, auto rental collision damage waiver, 24/7, 365 days travel assistance. Your purchases are protected under extended warranty and also zero liability protection covers you from unauthorized transactions.

Southwest Airlines Credit Card Welcome Offers

Southwest Airlines currently has three consumer credit cards, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Plus Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card and Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card. Each of them have the same welcome bonus during this promotional period. If you apply and are approved by Dec. 7, 2021, you can earn up to 100,000 Rapid Rewards points:

You can earn 50,000 points after spending $2,000 on eligible purchases in the first three months your account is open, plus another 50,000 points after spending $12,000 total on eligible purchases in the first 12 months of card membership.

The most notable of these three is the Southwest Plus credit card, as you can earn 100,000 points with a modest $69 annual fee. This is significant because many cards that come with large bonuses are often accompanied by a hefty annual fee.

Regardless of which card you select, by the time you meet the minimum spending thresholds, you will have earned at least 112,000 points. And with many people valuing Southwest Rapid Rewards points at 1.4 cents per point, this will give you over $1,500 in initial value.

These points can be stretched out for several round-trip flights around the country. For example, a round-trip flight from Los Angeles, CA to Fort Lauderdale, FL in January is just under 14,000 points. With 112,000 points you could book that itinerary eight times.

Southwest Plus Card Bonus Of 40000 Points

Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Card Review: ...

The Southwest Plus Cardis offering a welcome bonus of 40,000 points after you spend $1,000 within the first 3 months of card membership.

In terms of eligibility, the card isnt available to anyone who currently has a Southwest Rapid Rewards personal card, or anyone who has received a welcome bonus on a Southwest Rapid Rewards personal card in the past 24 months. However, you are eligible if you have a Southwest business credit card.

Beyond the restrictions related to which Southwest cards you have, keep in mind the general restrictions for Chase card approvals, including the 5/24 rule.

Different Southwest Credit Cards

There are three personal and two small business credit cards to choose from. Each one has a different annual fee and benefit tiers. The options can feel perplexing as only Delta Air Lines seems to have more options.

Here are the personal and business cards you should consider first.

How Do The Benefits Stack Up To The Competition

Youll seldom receive luxury benefits at the Premiers price, so theres nothing wrong with the cards limited selection of benefits. But you may want to consider competing cards that provide stronger perks.

You could just stick with the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card . It charges a higher annual fee, but thats essentially offset by an annual travel credit and a higher anniversary bonus. You get slightly better benefits, too, which is why we tend to recommend it over the Premier.

The United Explorer Card is a strong contender if youre not afraid to switch airlines. It waives its $95 annual fee for the first year and provides a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit, two annual United Club passes, and numerous other perks.

For something slightly less airline-restrictive, consider the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® Credit Card . Its a general travel card, rather than a co-branded airline card, but it delivers a Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit, plus a $100 airline incidental statement credit on top of that.

See Terms

The Rapid Rewards Premier cards terms and fees are standard across the board.

The highlight here is that there are no foreign transaction fees, which is a given for most travel credit cards. That means you can take the card along on every adventure without worrying about the additional fees youre racking up every time you swipe.

Considering how much the typical flight costs, that should be a breeze.

Valuepenguin’s Verdict: A Solid Though Not Extraordinary Option For Domestic Travelers

Overall, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card offers plenty of benefits for a loyal Southwest flyer seeking to earn more Rapid Rewards points. The value of the 6,000-point anniversary bonus on its own covers most of the card’s $99 annual fee. If you spend a few thousand dollars on Southwest airfare each year, the card’s double-point bonus on Southwest purchases should help you earn an award ticket every year or two. Also, if you’re aiming to earn the Southwest Companion Pass, the card’s sign-up bonus will put you well on the way to meeting the point threshold.

However, point maximizers should be aware that there are more valuable options for Southwest flyers, including the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Priority Credit Card. Furthermore, if you’re more an international traveler, or you prefer to not be beholden to a single airline, you should look into a general travel rewards card that gives you more flexibility on the airlines you fly on.

If you tend to travel a lot, you likely also need a place to lay your head at night. You might find that the could be a better fit for your wanderlust. The $95-annual-fee card earns 6 points for every $1 at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels and 2 points for every $1 spent on all other purchases.

Bonvoy points can also be transferred to more than 40 airlines, typically at a 3:1 ratio. Plus, for every 60,000 points transferred from Bonvoy to an airline, youll get a 5,000 point bonus. This could make the Boundless card a more flexible travel pick since you dont have to remain loyal to one airline.
