Most credit cards tack an extra charge onto purchases made outside the United States. If you’re planning to travel abroad, you’ll want to look out for these foreign transaction fees . They are assessed by your credit card issuer and are usually 1% to 3% of the purchase amount, with 3% being common. That amount might not seem like a big deal, but if you spent, say, $3,000 at a hotel, you could be looking at an additional $90 charge.
The best way to avoid foreign transaction fees is to get a travel credit card that doesn’t charge them. Fortunately, any travel credit card worth its salt including airline cards will not charge foreign transaction fees, so you have plenty of options. Some major issuers most notably Capital One and Discover don’t charge these fees on any of their cards.

What About The Rates
Foreign transaction fees arent the only cost thats specific to traveling abroad. Another one, easy to forget about, is the exchange rate.
What are your US dollars really worth in a foreign currency? Its a surprisingly difficult question, and not just because exchange rates are constantly changing: its also hard to answer because different institutions charge different rates.
Thats why if you send money abroad or get foreign cash from a currency exchanger, it pays to shop around to find a decent exchange rate. What you really want is an exchange rate as close as possible to the mid-market rate, which is what the banks use to trade between themselves. With Wise, you can even send money abroad at the mid-market rate itself, with only a simple and clearly stated fee to pay.
When you use a Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve credit card abroad, your money will likely be converted at an exchange rate set by Visa, the card issuer. The Visa rate tends to be a relatively good value way to spend money internationally.
But if you want the real mid-market rate itself, another option is coming. You can also get the Wise debit card, so you can withdraw cash from ATMs, and pay for goods and services wherever you are in the world. Using money in your Wise borderless multi-currency account, in which you can hold 40+ international currencies, youll be able to use the real local currency during your trip, having converted your US dollars at the mid-market rate.

Do You Need Travel Notifications For Out Of State Travel
Regarding domestic travel notifications Chase states:
No. You dont need to set up a travel notification if youre traveling to another state, only when you plan to travel abroad.
My card has been denied in New York before because of fraud prevention and I had to call in to Chase to authorize the charge. Since, it was not abroad it wasnt a major issue to make the quick phone call but I could have probably avoided the situation just by putting in a notification.
This is generally more of an issue for larger purchases.
So if youre planning on spending quite a bit of money in another state or city from where you live, it might be a good idea to just call ahead of time and get them to clear the transaction.

Too Many Recent Credit Card Applications
If youre a travel rewards junkie, you most likely have several credit cards in your wallet. It is recommended that you keep tabs on how many applications you have in the most recent 24 months. After 24 months, the credit card inquiry drops off your credit report.
Usually, if the bank decides you have too many recent applications, your application gets declined. The only thing you can do is wait until your hard inquiry count drops. These are two of the bank rules you should know about:
- Chase: The Chase 5/24 Rule is the most well-known rule. If you apply for at least 5 credit cards in the last 24 months, your application for select Chase cards is declined. Being listed as an authorized user counts as one of the 5 applications too. And, it doesnt matter which bank is offering the credit card. Some of the cards subject to the 5/24 rule include the Sapphire Reserve and Preferred application rules, Ink Business Preferred, and some of the co-brand credit cards.
- Bank of America: The BofA has a2/3/4 rule. You cant apply for more than 2 BofA credit cards every 2 months. You also cant apply for more than 3 cards in a year or 4 cards in two years.
Why Is It Challenging For International Students To Get A Credit Card
International students may have a difficult time getting approved for a credit card for a variety of reasons:
- Lack of a credit history: One of the struggles plaguing most students, international or not, is that students often have little to no credit history this can make it challenging to be approved for a credit card. The most important step for anyone newly applying for a credit card is to establish a good credit history. For international students, the best option for doing this is often by selecting a secured credit card for students.
- No SSN or ITIN: International students may not have a Social Security number or ITIN which, as we have outlined in this article, severely limits the options available when it comes to taking out a credit card.
One option for building credit without a Social Security number or ITIN is becoming an on someone else’s account who has a strong credit history.

What Are Foreign Transaction Fees
When you use a credit card overseas to buy something in the local currency, your credit card issuer has to convert the money youve spent into U.S. dollars to properly bill you. It may seem like any other transaction from your perspective, but behind the scenes the credit card issuer pays various costs associated with currency conversion, transferring money through a foreign bank and so on.
Many issuers offset these costs by charging a foreign transaction fee for every overseas purchase.
The fee usually ranges from 3%-5% of the amount spent on each transaction, which means the cost to you can really add up:

Will You Be Charged A Foreign Transaction Fee When Booking International Trips Online
You dont have to be in another country to rack up a foreign transaction fee. If you make a payment online that gets routed through a non-U.S. bank, you might see that pesky fee tacked onto your bill. This can happen when you are buying from a company that is not based in the U.S., but it also happens when booking hotels abroad.

Most properties within major hotel brand portfolios like Hilton or Marriott are individually owned and managed, but reservations are facilitated through a brand-wide website. This means that while your reservation may be made on a U.S. website and you may pay in USD, the room charges may be processed by the hotel itself through a non-U.S. bank.
Its generally hard to tell in these cases whether youll be charged a foreign transaction fee until after the payment is already processed. So its a best practice to use a card with no foreign transaction fees for booking purposes. Luckily, most top credit cards for booking hotel stays come with no such fees.
