Both Are Accepted Nearly Everywhere
Just about every merchant that accepts credit cards takes both Visa and Mastercard. That’s true not only in the U.S., but also internationally, where acceptance is lower for American Express and Discover, the two other big payment networks.
There are just a few exceptions to this near-universal acceptance of Visa and Mastercard. Usually, they occur when a merchant has an exclusive deal with one payment network. Probably the best-known arrangement is at Costco wholesale clubs, which accept only Visa cards. Similarly, Sam’s Club used to take Mastercard but not Visa, although it now accepts both. Even so, such exclusions are rare. You’re far more likely to run into a merchant that doesn’t take AmEx than one that doesn’t take both Visa and Mastercard.
Payment networks require merchants to follow a rule called “honor all cards.” What that means is that if a merchant takes Visa, it must take all Visa cards if it takes Mastercard, it must take all Mastercard cards.
How To Prepare Before Traveling To Mexico
Before you leave for Mexico, make a few arrangements to ensure you can use your card without a hitch.
- Get a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. Many cards will charge a 3% fee when you use your card abroad, so be on the lookout for cards that dont. The best travel cards such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express charge no foreign transaction fees.
- Give your card provider a heads up. If your card company sees a foreign transaction on your card, they may put a hold on your account for suspicious activity. To avoid this, give your provider a quick call letting them know youll be traveling to Mexico.
- Know what number to call if you have problems with your card while traveling. Your card might get stolen while youre traveling, or you could lose it. In these cases, youll want to know the right number to call to get a replacement. Ask your provider for a Mexican phone number you can dial in a pinch.
- Know where youll get cash once you arrive. Even if you have a credit card, its smart to have cash on you. So you dont waste time or money, plan out beforehand where youll get your cash. Check if your bank has international partnerships that allow you to use some ATMs for free.

Why You Should Never Get A Capital One Card

NOTE: Capital Ones Venture Card has improved a lot since this post was originally published in 2015. You can read about it here.
Capital Ones Venture Card that no hassles credit card advertised on TV will save you big on the road, right? Many people even me recommend this card but it is actually the WORST travel rewards credit card you can use. I get a lot of emails asking about this card, and I recently chastised two friends for using it as their primary credit card for gaining points and miles.
Wait, you just said you recommend it. How can it be that be bad, then?
Capital One gets a few things right: the simple rewards structure of their no-fee Venture Card is perfect for people who dont spend much money or who dont want to worry about points. They are selling simplicity and they do it well. I think if youre a low-spending, low-traveling person, this card could be worth your time .
And its time I explain why so people wont make the same mistakes my friends made!
While it is true you earn two points per dollar spent, not all points are equal. Its not how many points you earn, but how you can redeem those points.
Let me explain why Capital Ones Venture Card is not good for those wanting to get the most bang for their travel hacking buck and actually get free flights and hotel rooms:

Have you ever run into an issue trying to pay with your credit card, only to have the merchant say they wont accept it? That may be because youre using a credit card backed by a less accepted network like Discover or American Express® Compared to Visa® and Mastercard®, Discover and American Express credit cards arent as widely accepted by merchants in the U.S. and worldwide.
To get a better understanding of your credit cards merchant acceptance, find the network logo pictured on the front or back of your credit card. Then, check out the table below, which breaks down the merchant acceptance rates for Visa, Mastercard, Discover and American Express in the U.S. and worldwide:

Should I Pack The Amex Mastercard Or Visa
Probably the first thing you should do is to put down the Discover. Youre going through your wallet, trying to figure out which card to bring, right?
Theres a couple of reasons why you should lean toward for paying for purchases overseas. First of all, you dont get slammed with any fees, if youve taken the time to hunt down a card that has no foreign transaction fees. You also get the best rates. Most of the time, its also accepted everywhere. Like, about 85% of the time. Cash also has this amazing acceptance rate, at about 100%.
Thats the key thing, isnt it? Though youve got your choice between Discover, American Express, Visa or Mastercard, the main things youll have to factor in are how widely accepted each card is and what kind of foreign exchange rate they impose on you. Most of the time, this is set through these guys and not the card issuer, so we did a little research to figure out the best one of the bunch.
It shouldnt come as a surprise that American Express and Discover are hit-and-miss when it comes to getting accepted. I can barely pay for certain items with those two types of payment here. This is ironic, since Amex actually has some that give great bonuses to its users. To put a sweet cherry on top, it reportedly has one of the worst foreign conversion rates between the four, charging about 2 to 2.7 percent. As with all things, this will probably vary across the board depending on what card you have.
Capital One Spark Cash Plus: Best Business Card For Flat
Why we picked it: The Spark Cash Plus card offers excellent value in spite of its annual fee, including a lucrative sign-up bonus, one of the best flat cash back rates you can find on a business rewards card and a great annual bonus for big spenders.
Pros: Youll earn unlimited 2% cash back on all qualifying purchases, with no need to track spending or enroll in bonus categories. Theres a welcome bonus of up to $1,000 . Plus, this card comes with some business-friendly benefits including free employee cards, itemized year-end summaries, as well as virtual card numbers.
Cons: As a charge card, this card requires you to pay off your balance in full each billing cycle. It carries no ongoing APR or 0% introductory APR offers, making it less useful if you need to free up cash flow or chip away at business expenses over time. Also, it carries a $150 annual fee.
Who should apply? Business owners looking for a straightforward way to earn cash back on almost everything they buy will see a lot of value from this card, especially heavy spenders thanks to its annual bonus and flexible spending limits.
Who should skip? If you prefer the option of occasionally carrying a balance month-to-month, this charge card isnt for you.
