Does Alaska Have A Large Presence At Your Home Airport
Alaska Airlines is one of the smallest traditional U.S. airlines. Its hubs are mostly contained to cities on the West Coast, including:
- San Francisco
Further, the airline has focus cities in San Diego and San Jose . If you live outside these airports, you may have difficulty flying Alaska Airlines unless you commute to one of the airlines hubs regularly. If you fall into this camp, you may want to chase status with an airline that better serves your home airport instead.
Remember that Alaska Airlines operates a mainly domestic route network, with limited connections to Central America and Canada. The airline does have partnerships with a handful of international carriers, but youll only receive limited benefits. Keep this in mind if your travels often take you to Asia, Europe and beyond chances are, youd be better off with another airline.
That said, Alaska Airlines elite status is a great match for West Coast travelers who usually travel domestically. The benefits will make your travel experience more enjoyable, with complimentary upgrades, preferred seating and bonus mileage earning. When it comes time to travel abroad, you can earn and redeem miles with Alaskas huge network of international partners.
Another thing to note is that Alaska Airlines joined the Oneworld alliance in late March.
On the flip side, we could see Alaskas Oneworld membership hurt Mileage Plan in other ways.
Where The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Credit Card Shines
The most valuable feature on this card, by far, is the Companion Fare. This annual benefit allows you to cover a companion’s airline ticket for as low as $121 on any coach flight on Alaska Airlines booked through alaskaair.com. Plus, this benefit renews automatically each year on your account anniversary, regardless of how much you spend on the account.
Considering how expensive it is to fly to certain destinations even in coach this benefit makes the card incredibly valuable. Say a round trip to Hawaii costs $1,000 per ticket. Assuming a Companion Fare of $121, youd save $879 when purchasing your fellow traveler’s ticket. You can maximize this benefit by purchasing a ticket to one of Alaska’s more expensive destinations, such as Hawaii, Mexico or Costa Rica.
Solid sign-up bonus
This card comes with a valuable sign-up bonus: Get 40,000 bonus miles plus Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare from $121 with this offer. To qualify, make purchases of $2,000 or more within the first 90 days of opening your account. To see how far this bonus might take you, check out Alaskas mileage tool.
Free checked bags
Most airline cards offer this benefit, and Alaska is no exception. Alaska charges $30 for the first checked bag. If you and a companion each checked a bag on a round trip, this benefit would more than make up for the annual fee of $75.

Review: What Is The Value Of The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Credit Card
The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card is a great option for two types of people: those who want to earn a lot of useful airline miles or those who frequently fly on Alaska Airlines.
In either case, this credit card packs a lot of value. Youll enjoy Alaska Airlines-exclusive perks such as a free checked bag on every flight and discounts on in-flight purchases and lounges. Youll earn miles that can be redeemed not only on Alaska Airlines, but on 16 other airlines that are part of Mileage Plan. While many of the Mileage Plan airlines are already part of the oneworld alliance, you can find some exclusive airlines such as Korean Air. Though the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card is an airline card, it offers a high level of flexibility and options to book award travel beyond the Alaska Airline flights.
However, this card requires some management to maximize its value. The value of Alaska miles can vary greatly depending on the award ticket. To attain the higher end of this spectrum, you will need to conduct research on the best way to use your miles across different airlines/dates/times. Your redemptions require extra attention because of these limitations, which dont leave a lot of room to travel whenever you want. If youre looking for a greater level of freedom , consider general travel rewards cards such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

Are There Fuel Surcharges On Alaska Mileage Plan Awards
Many consumers are frustrated by the practice of airlines adding carrier imposed surcharges to award tickets. In the case of Mileage Plan, most partners dont have these surcharges. However, there are surcharges for travel on British Airways, Hainan Airlines, and Icelandair, which is something to keep in mind.

Upgrades On American Airlines
MVP Gold 75K members are eligible for first-class upgrades on American Airlines flights too. Upgrades are available on flights within the U.S. and between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Bermuda and Central America. You and one travel companion are eligible to upgrade from Main Cabin and premium economy to first class.
Upgrades process the day of departure or at check-in. You must opt-in to upgrades online when checking in to your American Airlines flights. Later in 2021, MVP Gold 75K members will be added to the upgrade waitlist 72 hours before travel. They will be automatically placed behind Platinum Pro members on the waitlist.
Ill peg this at half the value of Alaska Airlines upgrades since, as an Alaska elite, youre likely to fly American less than Alaska.
How Much Are Rewards Worth
According to The Points Guys latest valuation , Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles are worth up to 1.8 cents each. Thats a fair bit more valuable than many other airlines loyalty rewards, including American Airlines AAdvantage miles, Delta SkyMiles and Southwest Rapid Rewards points. However, keep in mind that Alaska Airlines travel map may be more niche, so the actual value youd receive from these miles may not be as valuable if you dont frequently travel within the airlines partner network.

You can earn unlimited miles and there are no blackout dates for award seats. Bonus miles are also an option: 30,000 if you spend $1,000 in the first 90 days of account opening.

Another bonus: both passengers will earn miles for the flight . However, the full-priced ticket must be paid for in cash, not miles.

Which Cards Compete With The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card
If youre interested in booking premium-cabin awards, earning transferable rewards points could be better because you wont be stuck with rewards attached to a single loyalty program.
Flexible rewards points, such as Chase Ultimate Rewards and Capital One miles, are easier to earn. Plus, many of these cards offer bigger sign-up bonuses or better-earning bonus rates in different spending categories. Here are a few great cards for earning transferrable points if youre not in specific need of Alaska miles:
If you can qualify for a business card , you should consider opening the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business card instead. It offers a better sign-up bonus of 60,000 bonus miles and Alaskas Companion Fare from $121 after spending $3,000 in the first 90 days of account opening and all the other benefits discussed above for an annual fee of $50 for the company and $25 per card.
Alaska Companion Certificate Every Year On Anniversary
Every year on the account anniversary of the Alaska Visa Business Card youll receive an Alaska companion certificate. Youll just have to pay $99 plus taxes and fees, which start at just $22, so youre looking at a $121+ fare for the second passenger.
The card has just a $75 annual fee , and so in the end, youre paying under $200 per year for a companion certificate, which is an excellent deal.
Heres the thing there are quite a few airlines that offer companion certificates in one form or another, but in my opinion, the Alaska companion certificate is by far the most generous:
- Its valid on any Alaska Airlines economy fare
- You can use it for a one-way, roundtrip, multi-city, etc.
- The companion earns miles and can even be upgraded
- The cardholder doesnt even have to be the one to use it you can use it for someone else, as long as you pay for the ticket with a card in your name
This benefit alone should be a reason to hold onto the card long term, in my opinion.

Applying For The Alaska Business Visa Doesnt Count Towards 5/24
Chase has the 5/24 rule, which is a restriction whereby you typically wont be approved for a Chase card if youve opened five or more new card accounts in the past 24 months. If this is a limit youre trying to stay under, applying for most business cards, including the Alaska Visa Business Card, shouldnt count towards that limit.
Thats because the card wont show up on your personal credit report, which is another reason to consider this card.
Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Credit Score
The Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card requires good to excellent credit to get approval but other factors are also considered in the application process including payment history of revolving credit, your total open cards, and the average age of accounts open. The credit bureau Experian says those with good credit usually have FICO scores of at least 670, with excellent scores starting at 800. Please note, though, that these numbers can vary between different bureaus.
If you have limited credit history or are currently building your credit, it may be difficult to get approved for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® card.

Often buying points strategically can be a good value, and Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan is one of my favorite programs to buy miles from, both thanks to the frequency with which the program sells miles, and what a good deal award redemptions can be. Alaska Mileage Plan has just rolled out its latest promotion on purchased miles, which is valid for the next several weeks.

Good Earning Scheme For An Airline Card

Thats 50 percent higher than the average airline earning scheme rate. Most co-branded airline cards offer 2 miles per dollar for airline purchases. The card also gives you 1 mile for all other purchases.

Alaska Airlines Companion Fare Benefit
Another fantastic benefit that makes The Alaska Airlines Visa Business card worth the $75 annual fee cost is the Alaska Airlines Companion Fare. You will earn the Companion Fare when you open the card and meet the minimum spending requirements, and then each following year you renew your card .
The Alaska Airlines Companion Fare allows you to bring along a guest on any Alaska Airlines flight from just $121 . For their ticket, youll pay the $99 Companion Fare fee and any taxes and fees, and the regular price for your own. There arent any blackout dates, and its good for any Alaska Airlines flight in coach. The ticket will be booked into coach but all flights are eligible for upgrades.
The Alaska Airlines Companion Fare easily justifies the annual fee as you could potentially get over $1,000 in value.
Why You Might Want This Card
No Alliances, No Problem
One thing that makes Alaska Airlines stand alone is that its not any part of the 3 major airline alliances. But dont let that deter you because you still have the option to book with their partners and/or transfer points to 15+ international participants and 3+ domestic ones. Something to keep in mind is American Airlines doesnt swap points anymore with Alaska. No worries though, they still partner with Qantas, Korean Air, Emirates and Singapore, so you still have a lot of options on how to use your Alaska miles. Earning miles is super quick, with the non-business version of the card offering the same welcome bonus as the business version. You also get first checked bag free, 20% back on in-flight purchases and 50% off Alaska Lounge day passes.
Only On Alaska Airlines
There are a few extremely valuable things that Alaska uniquely offers. The first being, taking advantage of Alaskas one-way . Click multi-city & use miles tab to book your ticket. Keep an eye on the cabins that youre seated in, and make sure you’re booking “one way” tickets instead of roundtrip. That’s how you’ll get the most value. Another exciting thing Alaska offers is their famous Companion Fare. You can add your companion along on your paid trip for just $121. The fine print here is that round-trip flights are usually the best way to get the most value from this — and companion fare can only be added to a ticket that you paid for with your Alaska Airline Visa.
