How Many Travel Credit Cards Should I Have

Make the Most of Reward Credit Cards

Having more than one travel credit card can be advantageous for people who travel often. Some people like to have both an airline and a hotel credit card, while others like to juggle multiple flexible points credit cards with different earning categories so they can maximize their earnings and have access to more transfer partners. The question of how many credit cards you should have depends on your spending habits, but know that as long as you space out your credit card applications, pay your bills on time and don’t run up a balance, having multiple credit cards shouldn’t hurt your credit.

How Much Car Insurance Can I Charge To My Card

Auto insurance companies keep an eye on your credit score too. In some states, auto insurance companies can use your credit score to rate you as a customer. Those with high credit scores are rewarded and those with low credit scores have to pay more in premiums. This is where the credit card utilization ratio comes in.

If a person spends close to their credit limit, or regularly maxes out their card, it can negatively affect their credit score. While a person can use their credit card to pay their insurance premiums, and as a way to raise their credit score, they might be going over the 30% utilization ratio. In turn, this could negatively impact their credit scores and raise their premiums.

Aaa Auto Insurance Coverage

AAA auto insurance is available to AAA members, and it doesnt cost much to become a member. You can get a AAA membership for about $50 to $100 per year.

The provider offers full coverage for cars in line with other popular insurance companies today. Heres what that means:

  • Bodily injury liability
  • Personal injury protection
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage

While you can get AAA roadside service in any location, you cant get AAA auto insurance in every county. You have to live in a county where AAA sells direct insurance plans. The easiest way to check on that is to search online for coverage in your area.

Should I Get A Cashback Or Travel Credit Card

Welcome to AAA

When it comes to cash back versus miles, the answer is all about your spending habits and how you prefer to redeem rewards. If you travel at least a few times per year, it’s often wiser to go for a travel credit card because they come with additional benefits that make travel easier and more affordable. However, if you don’t travel often or don’t want to spend your rewards on travel, a cashback card is usually a better option.

How To Choose A Rewards Credit Card

AAA Credit Card Savings

Rewards credit cards come in all shapes and sizes, so it’s important to take some time to choose the best card for your needs. You should decide if you’re willing to pay an annual fee for a card, since this can help narrow down choices. Rewards cards can have annual fees up to $550, which can be worthwhile, but not for everyone. Make sure you do the math to see if an annual fee is within your budget and if it can be outweighed by the card’s benefits.

Statement Credit Bonus Offer

The similarities between the AAA Member Rewards Card and the AAA Dollars® Plus Mastercard® run far deeper than just the point-earning potential of both cards. The Bank of America version of the card also earns the same $200 statement credit as the U.S. BANK version, though the AAA Member Rewards Visa requires a much smaller spend to reach the bonus.

New accounts earn the $200 statement credit after making just $750 in purchases within the first 90 days. The $750 minimum spend is half of the $1,500 U.S. Bank requires for the same cash back bonus not bad. Even better, to reach $750 in 90 days, a new account would only have to spend approximately $250 a month for the first three months. A generous bonus for such a small spend is a bonus worth celebrating, so hats off to Bank of American and AAA.

What’s Your Points And Miles Strategy

You’ll want to consider both your spending and your travel goals when developing a points-and-miles strategy. On the spending side of things, analyze where most of your spending lies and look for cards that reward those spending categories.

You also need to make sure the rewards you’re earning are useful to you. You should have some idea of how you want to use your points and miles. Answering these questions will guide you toward the right credit card.

  • Do you have a specific destination in mind?
  • Do you have a specific redemption in mind? ?
  • Or, do you just travel often and want to stockpile points and miles without a specific trip in mind?

To Be Or Not To Be Loyal

You’ll need to figure out whether you’re willing to stick with a specific airline or hotel chain, or if you prefer more flexible credit card points. Consider the following:

    • You might stay with a particular hotel chain all the time for work, but if you don’t plan to stay with them on vacation, the points you earn might not be as useful.

Types Of Rewards Credit Cards And How Rewards Work

Rewards credit cards typically provide one of three reward structures: cash back, points or miles. The way you earn and redeem rewards varies based on the type of credit card you open.

    • Cash back: Receive a percentage of spending back, directly related to how much you spent. Spend $100 on a 1% cash-back card, earn $1 in cash back.
    • Points and miles: Earn points or miles on purchases. The value of one point or one mile isn’t always equal to one cent. They might be worth more or less than a penny depending on the credit card you have and the way you redeem rewards.

In addition to the value of cash back, points and miles varying, redemption options also fluctuate. You may be able to redeem for a statement credit, travel, gift card, merchandise or more, depending on the card you have.

Are There Any Perks To Aaa Insurance

One of the main perks of AAA auto insurance is that you can also enjoy AAA roadside assistance. AAA is a household name in roadside assistance, and the company offers robust coverage. That means you can get your car towed to a mechanic even if you havent been in an accident.

All AAA roadside assistance plans include towing, locksmith services, tire changes, jump-starts, battery charges, fuel delivery, and some trip interruption assistance. The highest plan, Premier, extends coverage for RVs and trailers. It also includes a $100 reimbursement for a home locksmith, travel accident insurance, concierge services, and one day of an emergency rental car reimbursement.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve®, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express come with some of the best travel insurance benefits. Look for cards that come with trip cancellation insurance, lost luggage insurance and primary rental car insurance to save money on travel and plan for unexpected itinerary changes. As for medical and travel emergency insurance, most credit cards aren’t a good replacement for that, but the Chase Sapphire Reserve® does come with some travel accident insurance, emergency medical insurance and emergency evacuation coverage.

What’s The Best Airline For You

Knowing where you typically fly and what airlines tend to fly those routes will help you develop a solid points-and-miles strategy.

If your home airport is a hub for a particular airline like Atlantas Hartsfield-Jackson is a Delta hub or Chicago O’Hare is a hub for United you’re likely to fly with that airline. This means you’ll want to consider any credit cards co-branded with that airline, but you’ll also want to consider generic travel credit cards with that airline on their list of transfer partners.

If you’re considering travel credit cards with premium perks, look into the airports you’ll be flying from, to and through. If you typically fly out of or through airports that don’t have Priority Pass lounges but do have an American Express lounge, for example, you might lean toward The Platinum Card® from American Express.

How Does Credit Card Roadside Assistance Compare To Aaa

I keep a AAA membership for the discounts and benefits, especially at hotels and amusement parks. So, I typically call AAA if I need roadside assistance. But suppose you only maintain your AAA membership for roadside assistance. In that case, it may not be as necessary as youd previously assumed if you have a credit card such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the United Explorer Card. After all, these cards offer complimentary roadside assistance up to $50 four times each year.

Some other credit cards including all Visa cards provide paid access to roadside assistance. This access may be adequate if you dont utilize the benefit too frequently. Just remember that the roadside assistance benefit supplied by some credit cards technically requires you to be traveling away from home. So, the benefit might not apply if your car battery goes dead in your driveway.

What Is A Travel Credit Card

A travel credit card offers travel-related benefits and rewards. These rewards typically include bonus points on travel spending and a rewards system with travel redemption options.

The best travel credit cards even come with travel protections and perks, such as trip insurance, airport lounge access and elite status.

Making The Most Of Your Rewards Card

    AAA Gift Card

In order to make the most of your rewards card, you should familiarize yourself with the benefits and fees. Take note of any annual fees and the APR associated with your account, as well as the rewards rates and added perks, such as annual statement credits.

Once you’re familiar with the terms of your card, you can start to take full advantage of them. That may include setting reminders to use the $120 dining credit provided by the American Express® Gold Card or submitting a Global Entry application with the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card to receive up to $100 credit.

If you have multiple credit cards, consider the rewards offered by each card before deciding which to use. Let’s say you have the Citi® Double Cash Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve®. Use the Chase Sapphire Reserve® for all your travel and dining expenses to earn 3X points, then use the Citi® Double Cash Card for everything else to earn an effective 2% cash back 1% when you buy and 1% after you pay your bill.
