How To Use Amex Points To Pay Bill

Don't Miss

Is Billhop Too Good To Be True

American Express: Pay with Points

If this sounds too good to be true, there is a catch the service is not free. There is a 2.95% charge on every payment you make, i.e. if you pay a bill of £100, you will pay £102.95 in total.

This means that, unless you also want the cashflow benefits of putting your bills onto a credit or charge card, this is an expensive way of earning miles or points. It is something that you will find useful if you are struggling to hit the £3000 spend in 90 days for 10000 bonus points target on a new American Express Gold card for example.

On the other hand remember that, if you run your own business and are paying company expenses, the Billhop fee is fully tax deductible.

Book The Longest Flight In The World With Points

In October 2018, Singapore Airlines relaunched its flight route from Newark to Singapore that now claims the title as the longest in the world. Award tickets start at 140,000 points for premium economy and 184,000 points for business class. The premium economy redemption isn’t the greatest value, as cash tickets start at $1,350 meaning you get a value of about 1 cent per mile. Business class redemptions are slightly better, with cash tickets starting as about $5,000 for a potential value of 2.7 cents per mile.

Transfer Membership Rewards Points To Airline Partners

The best way to use your Membership Rewards is to transfer them to one of the 19 airline partners in the American Express network. You can transfer points at a 1:1 ratio in most cases, which means that 100,000 Membership Rewards equals 100,000 Delta SkyMiles®. You’ll get the most value by taking advantage of redemption deals offered by an airline.

To transfer your Membership Rewards to one of Amexs travel partners, log in to your account at MembershipRewards.com, scroll down and select the “Transfer Points” tab. Next, select the airline to which you’d like to transfer your points.

Once you’ve selected an airline travel partner, you’ll need to link your program account to American Express. If you have authorized users on your account, select the cardholder whose account you want to link. Keep in mind that the name of the cardholder must match the name of the airline loyalty program account. After the accounts are linked, you can select the number of Membership Rewards points you want to transfer. The points will transfer instantly for most airlines.

Below, we’ve highlighted some of the best redemption options available at the loyalty program from each of the 19 American Express travel partners.

What Value Can You Get From Amex Transfer Partners

Quick answer: 1.8 cents each on average

Transferring your points to one of Amexs transfer partners is a great way to get the most value for your points.

Below weve listed some popular Amex travel partners and the typical value per point youll get when moving points to them. One thing to keep in mind is that unlike Chase Ultimate Rewards, some Amex partners do not transfer at a 1:1 ratio. For example, when transferring to JetBlue, they transfer at a 250:200 ratio. That means if you need 10,000 JetBlue points, youll need to transfer 12,500 Amex Membership Rewards points.

Airline Partners

  • British Airways 0.7 to 5.5 cents each
  • Singapore KrisFlyer 0.8 to 4.5 cents each
  • All Nippon Airways 0.6 to 7 cents each

Hotel Partners

Note: Transferring your Amex Membership Rewards points to Marriott, Hilton, or Choice Hotels is not usually a good deal.

Here are a couple of examples of calculating the value of Amex Membership Rewards points.

Great value: Business-class flight with ANA miles

ANA offers fantastic value, especially when flying in business class. ANA offers a great sweet spot when traveling from North America to Japan for 75,000 to 90,000 points round-trip in business class. A business-class flight from New York to Tokyo could otherwise cost more than $6,000.

Not ideal: Coach From Boston to Orlando on JetBlue

How Do I Use Pay With Points

Its very easy to take advantage of the Pay With Points feature. First, sign in to your Amex account and then search for flights through the Amex Travel Portal as you normally would. At checkout, select either use only points or use points + American Express card to apply some or all of your points.

When paying with points, your card will be charged the full dollar amount. Amex will then add a statement credit for the portion of the flight that you paid for with points.

Bear in mind that the rebate offered by some cards isnt an outright discount. So, if you have an eligible card, you must still have the full amount of points in your account at the time of booking. The points rebate will post to your account within six to 10 weeks.

For instance, Ive redeemed 121,850 points to cover the cost of a $1,218.50 Cathay Pacific business class ticket from Male to Shanghai . I initially redeemed the points at a rate of 1 cent each, but thanks to The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, once I received my 35% rebate of 42,647 points, my effective redemption value jumped from 1 cent per point to 1.54 cents. The math is a little confusing, but if you divide 1 by 0.65 , you get .

Finally, remember that not every booking offers a rebate. Unless you have the elusive Business Centurion Card, only first- and business-class flights and economy flights on your selected airline are eligible for the rebate.

Get Up To 50% Off Some Great Amazon Products

How to earn credit card rewards when paying bills

Lets take a look at some examples of how you can apply this discount to your upcoming purchases, even if you dont need anything from Amazon right at the moment.

If youre in the market for a tablet that isnt flashy but gets the job done at a low price, we think the Fire HD 10 is one of the best budget tablets you can buy, and the retailer has a kids edition with a tough, colorful case but the same internal hardware as the main version. The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition currently prices at $119.99 before taxes and shipping, but if you apply the 50% Amex discount, that price drops to an insanely low $59.99.

Or, even though these discount offers dont apply to Amazon gift cards, they do apply to many other third-party retailer gift cards that Amazon sells. Amazon has literally hundreds of options, including retailers that might be useful right now, such as Netflix, DoorDash, Whole Foods and more.

So even if you dont have anything to get at over the next two months, you can always buy a gift card for yourself using the discount and bank the savings for later.

Best Approach For Transferring Points To Hotels

Finding value in hotels can be a tad bit more challenging, but it’s possible. You can use the same google approach, but let’s face it… hotels can be a little more personal when compared to airlines.

It will work for popular locations, but if you’re visiting family in a non-major city, you’re better off just look at the list of options available in the area.

Generally, Marriott will offer you the highest chance of getting great value out of your point transfers, especially if you make use of their 5th night free benefit which allows you to book 5-night award stays for the cost of 4.

Hilton is a little more of a challenge, but there’s value to be found out there. This is more common with their popular resorts. Hilton has four credit cards that offer excellent value, so you’ll want to consider those for building points in the Hilton Honors program.

You will not find much value in the U.S. when it comes to booking Choice Hotels, but there can be some solid value in the U.K. and Australia with a little research.

East Coast Cities To Europe

You can book an off-peak award from a city on the East Coast of North America to Dublin for just 13,000 Avios. The airline’s definition of off-peak is quite broad, and only the summer and certain dates around the winter holidays don’t qualify. As such, the airline’s peak schedule is significantly less restrictive than British Airways’ schedule. Aer Lingus also has a wide variety of cities that it counts as part of the Northeast, including:

  • Boston
  • Toronto
  • Washington, D.C.

You should expect to get a value of at least 2 cents per point when redeeming Avios for award travel on Aer Lingus. When searching for award space and comparing with the cash price, we were even able to find some economy class redemptions with a value of 3 to 4 cents per point. However, you may need to pay extra cash for fees in certain cases, which can reduce the value of a redemption.
