When you call and write the company, be clear about what youre doing. Are you merely stopping automatic payments? Or are you ending the service entirely. Put it in plain language.

You should also get a follow-up email from the company confirming the action. Hang onto that, too. The point is to have the cancellation confirmation in writing, says Susswein.

    Disputing A Credit Card Charge

How to avoid high interest charges on your credit card

Consumers can dispute fraudulent charges on their bill by calling their issuer. This is typically a quick process where the issuer will cancel the credit card in question and reissue a new one.

You also have the right to dispute a credit card charge for a purchase you willingly made. This can be done for a number of reasons, including services not rendered or dissatisfaction with services rendered. For example, if you purchase something online that shows up broken, your credit card issuer can assist with getting your money back.

However, there is a more formal process you must follow with non-fraud-related credit card disputes. In this case, you typically have 60 days from the time you receive your statement to act.

Can You Cancel A Pending Credit Card Transaction

Generally, it’s not possible to dispute pending credit card or debit card charges with your card issuer. Credit card companies and banks typically only assist with issues related to posted charges because there’s a chance that a pending amount will change once it posts .

Instead, it’s best to contact the merchant directly and ask them to help resolve any issues with a pending credit or debit charge. A merchant might be able to remove a pending transaction before it posts to your balance.

So this is what I did to solve this maddening issue of these XBOX charges:

    • I found this phone number 1-800-4MYXBOX on this website. Thanks to Kevin from Ionia, USA for posting it.
    • I thought I may have signed up for something without even realizing it, but chances are this is a phishing scam.
    • I spent a few minutes on the phone with the rep from XBox. I said I had no Microsoft LIVE login, or an XBox. So he searched the record from my credit card number.
    • He quickly found that a Microsoft LIVE account was created on July 7, 2011. And it was from an email account that I wont mention here .
    • I did a quick search and found the guy with the email is a Gamer out of Glendale, Arizona. Well deal with him later.
    • But the rep gave me a Transaction ID number to give to my credit card company indicating this was definitely a case of fraud.
    • The rep cancelled the account and severed the connection to my credit card.
    • I called my credit card company back. No questions asked, theyre sending me a new card with a new number and crediting all the fees.

If you are late paying off the balance of your credit card, you will likely incur further finance charges on the balance until it is paid. The best way to avoid these charges is to pay off the balance on time. You will often get a grace period of around 21 days after receiving the bill in which to do this. If you just pay off the minimum you will be incurring more and more interest and it will take you a long time to pay off the debt.

    What Is A Credit Card

A credit card is a card issued by a financial institution, typically a bank, and it enables the cardholder to borrow funds from that institution. Cardholders agree to pay the money back with interest, according to the institutions terms. Credit cards are issued in the following variety of categories:

    • Standard cards simply extend a line of credit to their users for making purchases, balance transfers, and/or cash advances and often have no annual fee.
    • Premium cards offer perks such as concierge services, airport lounge access, special event access, and more, but they usually have higher annual fees.
    • Rewards cards offer cash back, travel points, or other benefits to customers based on how they spend.
    • Balance transfer cards have low introductory interest rates and fees on balance transfers from another credit card.
    • Secured credit cards require an initial cash deposit that is held by the issuer as collateral.
    • Charge cards have no preset spending limit but often dont allow unpaid balances to carry over from month to month.

When choosing rewards cards, pay attention to whether rewards can expire and what options you have for redeeming them.

Stopping a credit card payment may be necessary for several reasons. At times, a pre-arranged payment must be delayed when a paycheck does not arrive on time, or some sudden financial emergency means delaying that payment for a short period of time. Other times, a purchase may have been made for a damaged or defective product, and you may want to withhold or reverse the payment. Fortunately, there are a couple of different ways to go about stopping the credit card payment from being processed, provided that the card provider is notified within a reasonable period of time.

Getting Those Xbox Charges Off Of Your Credit Card

Yep, thats what I saw on my credit card bill recently. Xbox charges. In fact, I saw three charges on my credit card from the transaction description above. Just from seeing it on my card, I could easily gather it had something to with A) Microsoft, B) XBox and C) Washington.

If you see these on your credit card, youre probably pretty ticked off. Because if youre like me, you dont own an Xbox. You dont play video games. And you have no idea why Microsoft would be charging you in the first place Im a Mac guy. So why would I have XBOX charges?

It was like any given day when I received my credit card bill. But once I saw a few charges in a row, I knew something was up. There were random charges from the same line right in a row. Here are the actual transactions from a screen grab I took a month ago:

Long story short, I called my credit card company. They quickly reversed the charges and investigated. However, today I noticed the reversal was reversed once again and added to my balance as valid charges. I was furious.

How To Stop Sneaky ‘gray Charges’ On Credit Card Bills

How to stop Crscr charges on your credit card or checking account? How to cancel subscription?

Hey, remember that newsletter that let you sign up for a free trial?

    Didn’t think so.

How about that old domain name you registered, or your kid’s gaming membership, or the magazine subscription that was initially offered as a freebie. Forgot about those, too, didn’t you?

Rest assured those companies didn’t forget. But they are probably counting on you to do so.

That way they can keep charging your credit card, every year or every month, in perpetuity. And you may not even realize what is going on.

There is even a name for all these sneaky little ongoing fees: Gray charges.

“Nine out of 10 people don’t check their credit-card charges carefully,” says Mick Weinstein, vice president of software company BillGuard. “And even if they do, it’s too time-consuming to dispute those charges. So most people simply let them go.”

Such fees are not illegal, per se. But they are designed to keep you on the hook.

The result: 233 million gray charges a year, amounting to a whopping $14.3 billion, according to a 2013 study by industry analysts Aite Group. That is an average charge of $61 per credit card bill.

Just ask Holly Gordon. When the healthy-living consultant from Shawnee, Okla., downloaded software called “You Need a Budget,” she started discovering all sorts of little charges she had completely forgotten about.

To wit: Auto-paying for satellite radio since 2009, spending almost $200 annually.

What To Do If You’re Charged A Credit Limit Fee

Your credit card issuer may be willing to waive the over-the-limit fee the first time you go over your credit limit. Just call your credit card issuer and ask if you can have the fee waived. They may be willing to remove the fee from your account as long as you’ve otherwise kept your account in good standing.

Otherwise, if you can’t get the fee removed, pay your balance well below the credit limit to prevent being charged a fee next month. You’ll have to reduce your credit card balance enough so that interest and fees won’t put you over your credit limit again next month.

Fraudulent Or Unauthorized Credit Card Charges

You can dispute a fraudulent credit card charge by contacting your credit card issuer directly and informing them of the problem. By law, you cannot be held liable for more than $50 in fraudulent charges. However, a charge of even this amount is unlikely. Today, most of the major banks offer a “no liability” feature on most of their credit cards. They waive the $50 charge, as long as you report the fraud within two billing cycles.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation recommends you also file a police report. This is not required, but it can help the police and other government bodies to track these crimes. A single fraudulent purchase on your account may be part of a larger problem that could be potentially uncovered.

You should investigate whether a purchase was truly fraudulent or not. Make sure it wasn’t done by a family member or close friend without your authorization, or due to a miscommunication. Generally, you should dispute a credit card charge only if you would be willing to also file a police report. If the unauthorized charge came about because of a miscommunication, you should work it out with the party involved before calling your bank and claiming it was fraud.
