The basics of how credit card processing works are the same regardless of what method is used. It’s simply a matter of the necessary data being transmitted to the payment processor, which in turn passes the data on to the relevant banks and/or association networks to verify the transaction.

Building A Cross Browser Autofill Form

Given what weve learned, is it truly possible to build a form that supports autofill across browsers? I think it is.

Or at least, we can get very close by taking these four steps.

    1. Add autocomplete attributes

This is the future of autofill. Browsers that dont recognize the values will ignore them.

This is progressive enhancement at its best.

    2. Use common values for input name attributes

To take advantage of autofill for Firefox and Edge users, you have to hope that the values you pick for the name attribute match what developers on other sites have used.

One way to do this would be to survey popular sites and see what they use and then use the same values.

Or perhaps use the same values as the autocomplete field in hopes that as more web developers become familiar with the standard that they will start using those names for their fields.

Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that your Firefox and Edge users will have previously visited a form that uses the same name values as your form does.

    3. Add name and/or label values that match the list Safari is looking for

Using the list that Jacques Caron was able to extract, you can modify the values for the name attribute or the label to match what Safari expects.

    4. Make autofill part of your test plans

Lately, Ive been asking audiences to raise their hands if autofill is part of their test plans. No one does.

Ive been working on the web since 1996, and I have yet to see autofill as part of the test plan.

Scan Credit Card Info With Iphone Camera In Safari

Scan your credit card in iOS 8 for faster purchases

If youre shopping on the web from Safari with iPhone, you can make your check-out time faster and much easier by using a great built-in scanning feature to scan credit card details. This uses the iPhone camera to pull info directly from the card, preventing you from having to manually enter the sixteen digit number, card name, and expiration date.

To access the credit card scanner, you simply need to be at a checkout portion of any website in Safari for iOS. In this example, well use Amazon.

Once at the checkout page where the site is requesting credit card information be entered, tap into the credit card entry area, then look above the keyboard for the Scan Credit Card button. Simply tapping that will open the iPhone Camera, where you are able to scan the credit card.

For best results, set the credit card to be scanned down against a neutral surface, then just hold the camera steady and it will pull the details from the front of the card.

All credit card information will be scanned this way, including he name on the card, the card number itself, and the expiration date. Youll still have to enter the security code yourself from the back of the card , but thats certainly much easier than entering all of the data on your own.

This feature is available on all iPhone and iPad hardware that is able to run a modern version of iOS and equipped with a camera. That makes it a bit more universal than, say, configuring Apple Pay, which requires the latest models.

Ios 8 Safari Now Scans Credit Cards With Iphone Camera Quick Contacts Come To Multitasking View

AppleInsider is supported by its audience and may earn commission as an Amazon Associate and affiliate partner on qualifying purchases. These affiliate partnerships do not influence our editorial content.

Apple’s changes to iOS 8 both big and small are largely focused on convenience, making it easier and faster for users to access the information they want. Two of the best examples of this come in the form of relatively minor tweaks: a new credit card scanning function in Safari, and a list of favorite and recent contacts in the multitasking view.

When placing an order in Safari, the keyboard in iOS 8 now features an option that reads “Scan Credit Card.” Once this is selected, the rear camera on the iPhone is opened and users can quickly scan in a card without having to enter the data.

Using this feature for the first time prompts dialogs requesting the user to grant Safari access not only to the iPhone’s camera, but also to its list of contacts. Presumably Apple attempts to match up the scanned data with contact data in an effort to ensure it is as accurate as possible.

Once scanned, the name and credit card number are automatically entered into the accompanying spaces. Users can also quickly jump between entry menus on a website with arrows that appear above the keyboard.

    Option : App And Terminal

If you’re looking for a mobile credit card processing solution that’s a little more robust, then the app and terminal option may be what you need. While it still relies on an app, this setup looks like a more traditional POS system.

Much like mobile card readers, mobile credit card terminals can be used anywhere you have your iPhone. They come with some additional features to help you streamline your business, maximize profits and better leverage your existing customer base. For instance, many mobile terminals are equipped with all of the capabilities of a regular POS terminal, such as inventory management, built-in customer relationship management software, staff management capabilities, marketing tools and advanced analytics.

For businesses that have a fixed location, multiple staff members, or consistent inventory, this remains an easy-to-use option while offering more functionality, along with some added reliability.

The terminals may come with a complete set of equipment, including a barcode scanner, cash register, receipt printer, and contactless or near-field communication reader, which allows you to accept contactless cards or services like Apple Pay and Google Pay, and reduces your liability for fraudulent charges. Customers always appreciate flexibility, and a terminal can provide more in that regard than most strictly app-and-reader solutions.
