Amazon explicitly says no credit/debit card needed for Kindle purchases

This is an interesting one to me, but some of you may know it already.

You need 1-click to be able to buy books for the Kindle. 1-click typically draws from a credit/debit card.

Now, if you have a gift certificate/card and apply it to your account, 1-click draws from that before it goes to your credit card.

In the past, Im pretty sure you needed a credit/debit card on the account, although you could later apply gift cards/certificates.

Now, Amazon explicitly says you do not need a credit/debit card, although it appears as though the user interface isnt clear when you do it.

What you do is go to your account, and go to

Manage Addresses and 1-Click Settings

Next, click the button to Enter a New Address.

Then, you would enter the address , and then

Set the address as your default by clicking the link on the address labeled Click here to make this your 1-Click default address. You may be prompted to associate a credit or debit card with the address, but entering one of these payment methods is not required.

There you go! You can set up 1-click without a credit card.

After that, you apply a gift certificate/card to your account, and you are in business.

Purchasing A Fire Stick

The first thing you need to know is this: if you buy your Fire Stick from Amazon using a standard Amazon account, itll likely come preloaded with your Amazon account credentials. That means youre better off purchasing a used Fire Stick from somewhere like eBay or Craigslist, or just picking one up through Amazon on a second account.

You can always deregister an Amazon account, which removes your account from the device altogether. For some, this may still seem like an invasion of privacy, but if youre that worried about Amazon knowing what youre doing with your device, you probably shouldnt buy a Fire Stick at all.

Dont Purchase The Fire Stick From Amazon

Quick Links

  • Secure and Ready to Stream
  • If you already own a Fire Stick, you can skip this step. When you buy the device from Amazon, it will already be connected to your Amazon account. This means that Amazon will be aware of who purchased the device.

Its still possible to de-register the account afterwards, but Amazon will have the purchase in their database.

To protect your privacy as much as possible, you should buy the device from sites like eBay or Craigslist. This way, there wont be any connection between your account and the device.

Setup A Separate Amazoncom Account For Kindle Fire

If you use the Kindle Fire or you have more than one Kindle Fire, you will want to make sure your child has a separate account for their Kindle Fire. This way you can assign a default one click payment option without affecting your normal 1 click and accounts.

If you only have 1 Kindle Fire or have tied to your account only and want to keep it that way, then you can just set your default 1-click payment for the Kindle Fire to what is explained in Step 2.

  • What Is Amazon Kids+

Amazon Kids+ is a label that Amazon applies to further subscription content. This was previously called Fire for Kids Unlimited, or FreeTime Unlimited in the US. As we’ve mentioned, this is a service that comes free for 1-year with the Fire Kids Edition tablet, but you can also subscribe to it separately, if you’d rather buy the $/£49.99 tablet.

It has tiered pricing: it’s £1.99/$2.99 a month for Prime subscribers for 1 child, £4.99/$6.99 a month for Prime subscribers up to 4 children. For non-Prime subscribers, it’s £3.99/$4.99 a month for 1 child, £7.99/$9.99 a month for up to 4 children. There are options for monthly or yearly subsciptions. Amazon also offers a free 1-month trial, if you want to give it a go.

Amazon Kids+ provides a couple of benefits over the regular Amazon Kids offering that comes with all Fire tablets. Amazon curates content and makes it available to children through the Fire tablet, so that they have access to age-appropriate books, apps, videos and web content.

This opens up the range of content that’s available to children, allowing them to make some additional selections, like accessing more books, without parental intervention. Unlike the content you might assign, this is all verified appropriate by Amazon. You retain the ability to add more content, as above, if you want to.

It’s worth noting, however, that books that you download through Amazon Kids+ don’t then appear on a Kindle linked to that child’s profile.

Adding Apps And Content To Amazon Kids

One of the things you’ll need to do in the regular Amazon Kids app is nominate the content that your children will have access to. This gives you complete vetting, as you’ll be responsible for allowing access to various apps and games – unless using Amazon Kids+, which we’ll get to in a second.

It’s easy enough to add content, but you have to follow these steps:

  • In the adult profile, head to Amazon Apps and find the app or game you want, download and install it.
  • Open the Amazon Kids app, and open the profile of the child you want to grant access to.
  • Tap “Add Content” and you’ll get the option to share content on your tablet, add websites or add videos from the web.
  • Select the content you want to add. If it’s content you have, you’ll get to pick apps, books, Audible if it’s websites you get to add the URL videos takes you to YouTube so you can select videos to allow access.
  • Sign back into the child’s profile to access the app or content.
  • This arrangement gives you plenty of freedom to add things you want your child to have access to. While Amazon Kids has some access to content included, divided into themes or characters, you’ll likely have some content you want your child to have, especially as they get older. Allowing access to apps and games is within your control, so you can make a decision about what your child has access to – beyond the protections that Amazon provide. There’s no access to in-app purchases, however.

Should I be worried about how the Kindle’s Silk Browser uses my data?

Not particularly. Amazon insists that all of the information it processes to make Silk work is kept completely anonymous, both coming and going. At no point is your browsing data linked to your personal Amazon account.

Furthermore, sites secured with SSL automatically bypass Amazon’s cloud acceleration. If that’s still not good enough for you, you can manually switch off Silk’s cloud acceleration in the browser’s settings menu.

Best Way To Setup Kindle Fire For Kids

YOUTUBE and Playstore on Fire Tablet 10 without using credit card details

I have been heavily vested in the Kindle Fire in recent weeks and am even gave away 2 Kindle Fire gadgets in a contest that is ended last week. But in learning and experimenting with the Kindle Fire I came up with the best way to give it as Christmas presents to my two kids who are 8 and 4 years old.

The Kindle Fire had a few limitations that made it less than ideal for little kids, 1 is that it required a credit card tied to One Click Purchase to the account the Kindle Fire was registered too. You needed this credit card setup even to download and install free Android apps for the Kindle Fire.

The second is that you cant put password protection on purchasing apps from the App store on a Kindle Fire, this would have potentially allowed my 5 year old who can only read a little from randomly installing apps and charging my card for them. He does this with the iTunes app store now and constantly tries to download free games but doesnt always notice the price tag next to some other games.

So I found a good solution at least one that works that will allow you to setup your Kindle Fire for your kids without worrying about your card being charged to infinity.

Set Up A Fire Tv Stick Using Your Own Account

This is a very simple way to keep your Fire TV Stick separate from your personal Amazon account. Though, if youre really paranoid about Amazon knowing who you are, youll want to use the other approach. With this approach, they could at least theoretically be aware that this Fire TV Stick is connected to your account.

To do this method, just follow these simple steps:

  • Connect the Amazon Fire TV Stick to your TV and home network.
  • Enter your account details when prompted.
  • Load Kodi or another content management app.
  • Select Settings-> My Account-> Amazon Account.
  • Select De-register.
  • This method will allow you to continue streaming content via Kodi or a similar app without Amazon being able to track your activity through your Fire Stick.

  • 3Tap My account or Register . This will take you to the Amazon account the E-Reader is registered with. XResearch source
