Hello, this is American Express calling. Would you mind verifying your credit card number?

Identity thieves often call and claim to be from an organization you trust a fire department thats conducting a fundraiser, a utility company thats about to shut off your electricity, an administrator of a contest youve won to trick you into giving them your credit card number.

You should also be careful about clicking any links in emails where the senders email address looks suspicious. Phishing is another form of fraud thats common online. With phishing scams, criminals may send emails pretending to be your bank or credit card issuer.

These emails may ask for personal information or may provide you with a phony link in an effort to steal your login credentials.

Just remember: If you didnt initiate the phone call or email, dont give out your card number.

To check if the request is legitimate, contact the organization via its published phone number or secure messaging system. You may also want to develop the habit of visiting bank and card issuers websites directly, not via links provided in emails, out of an abundance of caution.

How To Install Paper In A Hypercom Credit Card Machine

Knowing how to install the receipt paper on a Hypercom credit card machine can save time and frustration if the paper runs out at an inopportune time, such as during a transaction. Hypercom credit card machines have a special paper-holder receptacle to hold receipt paper. Loading a new paper roll into a Hypercom is not a complicated process because, unlike other credit card machines, you don’t need to thread the paper into a printer slot on the device.

  • 1.

Open the paper-holder cover. Pull the top of the cover up to reveal the receipt paper receptacle. On some Hypercom models, you need to squeeze the paper cover tabs on either side of the paper cover before you can pull up the cover.

  • 2.

Place the roll of receipt paper into the paper holder so that the end of the roll feeds from the bottom and not the top. The direction of the end of the roll should also be facing the device.

  • 3.

Pull the end of the receipt paper roll out, and then close the paper-holder cover. You will hear an audible click when the cover is securely in place.

Accept Credit Card Payments Manually For Your Business

If you dont already have a credit card terminal, you should absolutely invest in one. Processing in-person transactions manually takes time and undermines the fraud-prevention measures especially EMV available for card-present transactions.

Now, to manually accept credit card payments can vary in appearance and order depending on your provider, but generally entails these steps:

  • Enter the card number provided.
  • Enter the expiration date of the card.
  • Enter the amount to be charged to the account.
  • Enter the name of the cardholder.
  • So far, these are simply the basics. To do yourself a favor and defend your business against card-not-present fraud, you should also implement the following steps:

  • Enter the billing address for the card.
  • Enter the ZIP code for the card.
  • Require that both the ZIP code and billing address match bank records.
  • Request the CVV on the card .
  • If you have a customizable Virtual Terminal, you can specify that all this data must be entered for a transaction to be approved. CVV helps confirm that the customer is in possession of the physical credit card, whereas AVS helps confirm that the customer is, in fact, the cardholder. Capturing AVS also lowers your rates because it shows you did your due diligence to mitigate the risks associated with card-not-present transactions.

Take Security Further With Remote Signature

Unfortunately, even if you configure your security settings exactly as above so and train your staff on the best protocol to manually accept credit card payments, youre still susceptible to chargebacks if you arent capturing signatures for your transactions.

Understandably, this sounds like a major challenge for remote orders. Fax machines are becoming increasingly rare, and requesting a faxed of a purchase is asking a lot of a customer. Follow through of that process is largely out of your hands.

Now, consider this alternative: An emailed receipt requesting a customer’s signature, either by finger on a smartphone or by mouse on a desktop computer or laptop. Obtaining a signature is your best defense against chargebacks. By making it easy for your customers to sign for remote purchases, you can better defend your business in the event of card-not-present fraud.

    How Wireless Processing Works

There are multiple wireless : credit cards and debit cards, key fobs, smart cards, or other devices, including smartphones and other mobile devices, that use radio-frequency identification or near field communication . Samsung Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Fitbit Pay, or any bank mobile application that supports contactless) for making secure payments can be used in this case.

  • The merchant slides the customers card through a wireless credit card machine and enters the sale amount. Similar to cellular technology, the terminal connects to a radio tower and sends the credit card information and the amount of the purchase over to the merchant services provider, like Stax.
  • The merchant services provider then passes this information to the bank that issued the customers credit card . They check to see if the card is valid. If the amount requested is available on the card, it sets aside the amount of the purchase for the merchant.
  • The issuing bank sends back an approval or decline message to the merchant services provider.
  • The transaction information is sent back to the mobile credit card machine. It only takes about 10 seconds to complete the transaction .
