American Express Platinum Card: How To Get Amex Platinum

Low credit quality

If you’re unsure about your rating, it’s best to check it with your credit bureaus. For eligible countries, you can translate your international credit score into a U.S. equivalent credit score using Nova Credit. You’ll be able to see whether your translated score results in a recommendation to apply for the American Express Platinum card. To see whether your country is eligible, you can visit our homepage.

Individuals who use travel agencies or websites

Whether it is by visiting their website or calling, direct airline ticket purchases receive the greatest perks from the Amex Platinum card. The 5X membership points offer applies in those circumstances, not when booking through a travel agency or third-party website.

The Bottom Line On American Express Membership Rewards Points

Earn 60k Points With This Elevated Amex Platinum Offer

The American Express Membership Rewards program offers a lot of flexibility, but, unfortunately, you lose some value if you dont choose your redemptions carefully. If you want to redeem directly with Amex, youll get the most value when you use your points to buy gift cards with certain merchants, book flights through American Express, or book hotels in the Fine Hotels & Resorts portfolio.

If you want to maximize the value of your points, however, your best bet is to transfer them to one of Amexs airline or hotel transfer partners. Just keep in mind that you may need to do some research to make sure youre getting enough value to make it worth it.

If you want to go all-in on Membership Rewards, sign up for more than one of the programs credit cards. That way, you can always make sure you get maximum value on your everyday spending.

The Membership Rewards program isnt the only one of its kind. Chase Ultimate Rewards also offers ample flexibility and provides more value with redemptions than Amex does. Also, the Citi ThankYou Rewards program has comparable flexibility as well as similar point values to the Membership Rewards program.

Transfer Points To A Hotel Or Airline Partner

Just like with any transferable points program, the best potential value you can get is from transferring your Amex points to a partner program. Amex has 18 airline and three hotel loyalty program partners, and you can transfer points to any of them.

This is particularly valuable for flying, as opposed to hotel stays. In many cases, the cash price and the miles price of a ticket aren’t linked, so it’s possible to get exponentially increased value from your points by transferring them and booking an award ticket instead. That means potentially being able to fly long-haul in first or business class with points, among other things.

Taking Advantage Of One Last Amex Platinum Perk For The Trip Home: Clear Membership

Ive had TSA PreCheck for a couple of years and will never go back to my days of standing in the regular TSA line. Thats especially true now that I can receive a statement credit when its time to renew that membership with my Amex Platinum card.

Ive been a bit more hesitant to pony up the additional $179 annual fee for Clear expedited security clearance, but as luck would have it, my new card covers that, too.

Clear isnt available at my home airport, but I had access to it at Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport . We stopped a Clear agent before heading to security and she walked us through the initial sign-up process before showing us how to use the biometrics kiosks and escorting us to the baggage screening area.

The entire process took less than 10 minutes, and on subsequent trips using TSA PreCheck and Clear, Ive gotten through security screening shockingly fast.

However, you should understand Amex application rules before applying for multiple cards to make sure you’ll qualify. An important rule to note is that you can only have four American Express consumer cards at a time.

Just take a few seconds at a Clear kiosk, and youll be escorted directly to the big gray bins.

Through Resy, the Platinum deal is 125,000 points after spending $6,000 in your first six months, which is 25% more points than the standard offer, but the restaurant and Shop Small multiplier is 15X rather than 10X. If you max out the $25,000 combined cap in your first six months, thats 375,000 additional Membership Rewards points 50% more than youd get from applying directly through American Express.

Resys Gold card incentive is 60,000 points after spending $4,000 in three months plus 20% back as a statement credit on all restaurant purchases in your first 12 months with the card and up to $250 in credits. How Long To Wait

If you are getting ready to apply for your first American Express card and you decide to go with one of the easier options to get approved for then you might want to wait 6 months to a year to apply for the Platinum Card.

That should give Amex some time to learn to trust you.

Some like to wait even longer to establish their credit history, but generally 6 months to one year is enough time for banks to start trusting you a little bit.
