How To Get An Alaska Airlines Credit Card

Alaska Airlines Credit Card – How to Make Money With Travel Cards

Alaska Airlines, which bought Virgin America in 2016, now flies to more than 115 destinations in the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Costa Rica.

And, while it doesnt belong to one of the three main airline alliances, it has an impressive range of partners:

Alaska Airlines Partners
Ravn Alaska Singapore Airlines

You can use Alaska Airlines miles with any partner in that list, including some seriously luxurious airlines like Cathay Pacific and Emirates, which give you incredible value for your Alaska miles. You could, for example, fly from the U.S. to Asia in first class on Cathay Pacific for 70,000 miles one way a flight that, in cash, would cost almost $10,000. Thats almost 14 cents per mile!

Cost of a Cathay Pacific flight in cash or by credit card.

Airlines Visa Signature Credit Card Bonus

There are two parts to the bonus for this card. First of all, you receive 40,000 bonus miles after you spend $2,000 on eligible purchases with the card in 90 days of your account opening. With redemptions starting at 5,000 miles for a one-way flight, thats up to four round-trip airfares or eight one-way flights.

The second part of the signing bonus is swift access to a discounted companion fare. When you meet the requirements of the one-time offer, you can buy a ticket for a companion for as little as $121 . Youll be eligible for another companion fare on your first card anniversary and every year after that.

Is The Annual Fee Worth It

Considering what the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® Card offers, its $75 annual fee is a bargain.

Alaska’s Famous Companion Fare alone can be worth hundreds of dollars depending on how you use it. If you frequently travel with someone else, then the value of the annual companion fare should easily outweigh this card’s annual fee.

You’ll save $30 every time you need to check a bag, plus $30 per travel companion for up to six other people. And since you’ll be earning 3 miles per $1 on purchases with Alaska Airlines, you should get plenty of value from this card’s travel rewards, as well.

Which Cards Offer The Alaska Airlines Companion Fare Benefit

The companion fare benefit is available with both the personal and the business version of the Alaska Airlines credit card. Consumers can apply for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card, while business owners can opt for the Alaska Airlines Visa Business credit card. If you own a business, you may apply for both the consumer and business credit cards to double up on the welcome bonus and annual companion passes.

If you don’t already have an Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan loyalty account, one will be created for you after you get approved for your credit card. If you have an existing Mileage Plan account, ensure that you share your member number during the application process.

Bonus Reason: The $75 Annual Fee Doesnt Scare Me

Best Travel Credit Cards

The only negative part about the credit card is its annual fee of $75. But considering the 30,000 bonus miles and free Companion Fare ticket, its well worth it. I think its one of the best airline credit cards for my needs, mainly because of the low spending threshold and the routes Alaska Airlines flies.

How To Access Alaska Airlines Lounges

  • Ben Schlappig

In this post I wanted to take a look at how to access Alaska Lounges, especially with the airline recently joining the oneworld alliance, increasing the cost of a lounge membership, and opening a new lounge at SFO.

Alaska Airlines is unique among US airlines when it comes to its lounge access policies, as its the only major US airline to allow all paid first class passengers into lounges. There are of course many other ways to access the Seattle-based carriers lounges as well, so lets take a comprehensive look at how Alaska Lounge access works.

In this post:

  • Bottom line
  • Transferring Miles From Other Programs Or Buying Them Straight From Alaska

If you have Marriott Bonvoy Points burning a hole in your pocket, you can opt to transfer these over to Mileage Plan Miles at a rate of 3:1.

And if youre just shy of the number of miles you need for a particular flight or award, you have the option of buying enough miles to make up the difference.

Why Is This Card So Popular

I commented in the past that this card has an almost fanatical devotion among residents in the Pacific Northwest, but I dont think its about the miles. The average consumer is not a miles and points addict and almost certainly has never heard of manufactured spend. Even some frequent flyers may not really understand why they use a particular card. Capital One has slick, successful marketing campaigns but always looks pretty awful to me when I examine the benefits.

One idea why my neighbors like the card is that Alaska Airlines is a local company, and we like local stuff. Its why Alaska serves Sun Liquor spirits, and makes a big deal about delivering Copper River salmon from Alaska. Another idea is that Alaska is a friendly company. Theyve got great customer service, and if people are flying with them anyway they might want to use their card.

But my preferred idea is that the companion fare is a very salient benefit. Not everyone maximizes this benefit to the same degree, and some probably never knew that it used to be valid for first class tickets. But when the time comes to redeem it, that companion fare means a couple hundred dollars all at once. Earning and redeeming miles at some future date, assuming there is award space and the program hasnt been devalued, is much more difficult to value. I actually prefer to earn Avios points if I want to book an award on Alaska Airlines, though Alaskas miles are pretty good for partners like Cathay Pacific.

Improved Offer For Alaska Airlines Visa Signature

This is along similar lines to the above point about getting an Admirals Club membership, but is worth pointing out separately.

Perhaps ironically, the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® is the best credit card for getting Alaska Lounge access.

The card has a $450 annual fee, and offers an Admirals Club membership for the primary cardmember, allowing them to access Alaska Lounges.

The icing on the cake is that those with the card can add up to 10 authorized users at no cost, and each of those authorized users receives Admirals Club access when flying American Airlines same day. This access is for the authorized user and two guests or immediate family .

However, this authorized user benefit doesnt extend to Alaska Lounges only the primary cardmember gets Alaska Lounge access.

There aren’t any bonus categories other than Alaska Airlines purchases, but using your card for regular spending is one of the best ways to earn Alaska miles, other than flying Alaska or its partners.

If you have good credit and frequently travel on Alaska Airlines, the Visa Signature card packs a valuable punch. Besides the opportunity to rack up extra frequent flyer miles in the airlines Mileage Plan rewards program, youll get some valuable travel benefits, both as a new cardholder and on an ongoing basis. The value of the annual companion ticket alone may outweigh the modest annual fee, especially if you use the benefit on a more expensive destination.

If you only fly occasionally, however, you may want to consider other travel cards, perhaps one that awards miles for dining out, gas or groceries too. The fact that this card doesnt award bonus miles on non-airline purchases makes it harder for less frequent travelers to build up their stash.

    • Everyday spending earns miles at a low rate

    • Airline cards have less flexibility

The Alaska Airlines Credit Card is issued by Bank of America, so there are some general restrictions to be aware of:

    • Bank of America will typically only approve you for two cards in a two month period, three cards in a 12 month period, and four cards in a 24 month period
    • Per the terms, this card will not be available to you if you currently have or have had the card in the preceding 24 month period

    The Alaska Airlines Companion Ticket

The reason that the Alaska Airlines Credit Card is such a keeper is because of the annual companion ticket that it offers, which consistently more than justifies the annual fee, in my opinion.

The Alaska Airlines companion certificate is the single most valuable airline credit card companion ticket, in my opinion. Youll pay $99 plus taxes and fees , so youre looking at paying $121+ for your companion.

What makes this companion fare so exceptional is that its valid on all Alaska Airlines economy fares, you can use it for one-ways or roundtrips, the companion even earns miles and is eligible for upgrades, etc. You can also use it anywhere Alaska flights, from Hawaii, to Costa Rica, to Mexico.

Recently a restriction was added whereby you have to pay for the ticket using your Alaska Card, though that shouldnt be a big deal. Besides, the card offers triple miles on Alaska purchases.

See this post for everything you need to know about the Alaska Airlines companion fare. Even as someone who doesnt fly Alaska that often, this is something Ive consistently gotten good value out of.

Plan A Trip To Use The Companion Fare

The annual Companion Fare is a key perk of the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card. With it, you can book a ticket for a companion on the same itinerary for just $99 plus taxes and fees. This can potentially result in hundreds of dollars in savings.

It takes up to two billing cycles past earning your Companion Fare to receive the code. The code has an expiration date that will be listed. The Companion Fare must be booked within 12 months of the date of issue.
