Getting Jcpenney Removed From My Credit Report When I Wasn’t The Credit Card Owner
Hi, I am working on getting my credit score up because I’m planning on applying for a a car loan soon. I got a few credit cards which I have been lucky enough to raise my score from 546 to 575 in just 3 months. with each payment, it seems that my credit score goes up. One card is Express for $250 limit and has $200 charged to it. Onestopplus.com credit card is a $250 limit and I just recently paid the balance off on it to $0. The last one is Fingerhut/Web bank and it started at $600 and I only charged $169 to it and have paid it down to $100 by making double the minimum due. I am in their good graces so they have increased my limit to $1200 which is doubled. Which really helps my utilization.
So, what should I do here? She has since filed bankruptcy due to health problems and no longer hs the JcPenney card and makes no payments on the card. The Card is showing all paid as agreed from 2007-July 2013 but it is showing that I have ;a balance of $1936 of a $2600 limit which is really really killing me as far as utilization. So how do I go about getting this removed from my credit reports? I was never a card holder or had a personal card whatsoever like I mentioned. She had just gave me the card to me to use to buy a birthday gift and that’s it. She just added me temporarily for that day so I could make the purchase without her being there. FYI she had also removed me right after that, but the card was still reporting on my CR.
Send A Letter Requesting Card Account Closure Just To Be Sure
For added insurance , write a short cancellation letter to the card issuer. Request written confirmation of the accounts closure.
The letter should include your name, address, phone number and account number, and details from your earlier phone call. Also, state that you want your credit report to reflect that the account was closed at the consumers request.
Along with the letter, include the check number that you used to pay off your account balance.
Make a copy of the letter for your records. Send the letter via certified mail or with return receipt requested, so you can prove the company received your letter.

Pay Off Any Remaining Balance
Pay off your credit card in full or, if you can find a balance transfer card with better terms, transfer the balance. You cant completely close a card until the balance is paid.
If you dont want any more charges accrued to the card until the balance is paid, you can contact the issuer and ask that the card be frozen until the balance is cleared and the card closed.

Heres What Happens If You Dont Use Your Credit Card:
- Nothing is likely to happen if you dont use your credit card for a few months, as long as you make bill payments for any recurring monthly charges.
- The credit cards issuer may decide to close your account after a long period of inactivity. There is no standard timeframe, but they will often send a notice in advance and give you a chance to use your card first.
- Some credit card rewards will expire after a certain period of account inactivity. Youll also lose any rewards youve yet to redeem when your account is closed.
- If the credit card youre not using has a $0 balance and is in good standing, positive information will be added to your credit reports each month the account stays open.
- Unpaid balances from before you stopped using the card will continue to accrue interest. If your balances have been paid in full, you wont have to send in any new payments.
- If your credit card charges an annual fee, not using the card wont get you out of having to pay. And if youre not getting anything out of a card that youre paying for, you might want to close it.
The bottom line is that not using your card can still be good for your credit. And its far better than using your card irresponsibly. So if you dont trust yourself to limit your spending, it may be wise to set your card aside until you have a necessary expense.

Old Credit Is The Best Credit
The age of a credit card account is also an important consideration. The time an account has been open is a factor in credit scores, Griffin says. A longer positive history is beneficial to credit scores. So, closing an older account in theory could have a more negative impact.
How negative? Theres no single answer, Griffin says. Credit scores weigh everything in a persons credit history in relation to each other. So, for one person, closing an older account can represent higher risk than it does for another person solely because of the unique nature of their overall credit histories.
If you are young and have a short credit history, closing the account could hurt your overall credit score more than if you were someone in their 50s who has a much longer credit history. As stated earlier, closing the account doesnt wipe that account history off your report, so if you open a new credit card with more attractive terms to replace the card youre canceling, your credit score wont take a big hit.

Pros And Cons Of Cancelling A Credit Card
Before you can make an informed decision about whether to close a credit card, you need to understand the pros and cons of doing so.
There are a couple reasons to keep a paid-off account open. These include the following:
- Maintains your credit score:;By far, the most important reason to keep an account open is to protect your credit score. We’ll talk more about this in a minute.
- Keeps access to perks and rewards:;Once you cancel an account, you lose access to all the perks that come with it, and once an account is closed, you may not be able to reopen it. Depending on the terms of the card, you may also lose any accumulated rewards.
- Provides payment options:;Even if you don’t need the credit card now, keeping the account open gives you more options for future purchases.
On the other hand, there are certain times when it may be best to let a card go. These include the following scenarios:
Why Canceling A Credit Card Could Hurt Your Credit Score Temporarily:
One way canceling a credit card account could hurt your credit score is if it reduces the amount of credit that you have available and thus increases your overall . Keeping utilization low is key for a good credit score. So closing a high-limit credit card account will hurt your score more than closing a low-limit account, all else being equal.
Another way canceling a credit card account could hurt your credit score is if it brings down the average age of your accounts. That can make it seem like your credit history is shorter than it really is. Closing one of your oldest accounts will lead to more credit score damage than closing a newer one.
Plus, youll have one fewer account reporting positive information to the credit bureaus each month, assuming the credit card you cancel was in good standing.
