Uae Extends Its Visa Amnesty Initiative Again

The United Arab Emirates has decided to extend its visa amnesty until the end of 2018. This is the second time when the deadline has been pushed back by the authorities. The deadline for the three-month amnesty was set to expire on December 1. The initiative announced by the countrys Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship was part of the countrys 47th National Day celebrations.

As part of the visa amnesty initiative, people who have exceeded their expiry date on their visa would be allowed to leave the country voluntarily without a no entry passport stamp or help them apply for a new six-month jobseekers visa without the need for a sponsor.

Launched on August 1, the initiative has drawn a good response. While many applicants have opted to stay in the country and look for jobs, there have others who have wanted to leave to their countries. Brigadier Saeed Rakan Al Rashidi, the acting director-general of Foreigners and Ports Affairs at the Authority has stated that the decision to extend the initiative after it received many calls from those who were unable to benefit from it.

Visa Requirements For Gcc Nationals

The citizens of GCC countries i.e. the Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, do not require a visa to visit the UAE.

The GCC residents who are not the national citizens but are working as high-level official such as doctors, managers, engineers or public sector employees along with their families can have a 30-day non-renewable visa at all the airports in the UAE upon arrival.

Renewing Or Extending Tourist Visa

All types of visit and tourist visas can be extended for 30 days twice, upon applying for it and after successful approval by the relevant authority. This can be done without the need to leave the country.

Visitors and tourists can apply for the second renewal before the expiry of the first one against AED 600 each time of renewal.

Visa overstayers who do not renew, as above, will have to pay AED 100 fine for each day of their overstay, to be calculated from 10 days after the visa expiry.

However, the new rule for extension does not apply on the following categories:

• visitors and tourists who are residents in GCC countries
• residents accompanying GCC nationals

Warning For Indian Workers Travelling To Uae On Visit Visa

The Indian Consul General in Dubai, Vipul, has requested Indian workers to stop travelling to the UAE on visit visas and getting involved in low-paid jobs there. The consulate has reported to have received several distress calls from workers lately. More than 2.6 million Indians are currently residing in the UAE, with a large portion being employed in well-paying jobs.

Vipul mentioned that there are several initiatives underway in India to educate workers against travelling on visit visas in search of job opportunities. However, the number of distressed Indian workers in the UAE are on the rise. He advised that workers should register on the system for emigration clearance when travelling to any of the 18 listed foreign nations. India had launched the e-migrate project for the protection of workers and to discourage illegal employment practices. Vipul mentioned that if a worker is subjected to payment of less salary than mentioned in the contract, the agent in India can be held responsible, and punished legally.
