Number And Timing Of Applications

How long should you wait to apply for a credit card after being declined?

When it comes to American Express rules for how many applications you can have and how frequently you can submit them, again, there arent any published, hard-and-fast requirements. However, I did find a number of data points that may help you decide how to apply:

  • You can apply for two cards in a single day. However, many reports indicate that at least one application will likely be put on hold as a fraud prevention mechanism, especially if youre applying for two cards. In addition, theres no guarantee that those applications will be combined into a single hard inquiry on your credit report, although it does happen. Enrollment required for select benefits.
  • You may be able to get approved for more than two cards in a 90-day period. However, most of these reports were a combination of credit and formerly known as charge cards, so the general rule of thumb is that you shouldnt apply for three or more Amex credit cards within three months. Your credit score places a numerical value on how trustworthy you can be. With that in mind, a quick recap of what affects your credit score.

Payment History

Obviously, if you pay your bills on time, you will look more credit-worthy to the banks. And like I said above, pay your credit card bills on time and in full.

This is mostly a fancy word for the amount owed. Basically, if you use a lot of the credit offered to you, then banks find you less credit-worthy. Why does she need all that extra money?, they ask. So if you have a lot of credit available to you but you dont use a lot of it, you seem more credit-worthy to the bank.

Average Age of Accounts

If banks have been extending you credit for a long time, you look more credit-worthy.

New Credit Inquiries

If you keep asking the banks for more credit, that naturally hurts your credit score.

How Often Do You Apply For Credit Cards Overall

This, ultimately, is what I asked my friend and the most relevant to her situation. If you consider yourself a travel hacker and apply for cards all the time, you should follow the general rule of thumb and wait 90 days for new cards.

But if youre just starting out, or have a lot of expenses coming up, its not the worst thing in the world to apply for, say, two cards within a month of each other. It will definitely hurt your score in the short term but on time payments and your credit utilization should balance that out in the long term.

Which is why I say everything depends. Personally, I dont adhere to a strict 90 days anymore, though I try to keep everything spaced out like that as a general guideline.

Has Coronavirus Impacted Credit Card Approval Odds

Coronavirus, and the accompanying economic uncertainty, has changed so many parts of our economy. Has coronavirus impacted the odds of being approved for a credit card? Yes and no.

When the pandemic first started, we saw some card issuers get significantly tougher with approvals. Typically these changes werent actually published, but rather we saw card issuers try to limit their exposure. This presented itself in a few ways:

  • Card issuers have in some cases limited the total credit theyre willing to extend people, meaning you may have to move around credit to get approved for a card
  • Card issuers may have increased requirements for approval, ranging from requiring higher credit scores to higher income
  • Anecdotally weve seen small business card approvals get tougher, given how many businesses are struggling financially and may be more likely to take on credit card debt

While getting approved for credit cards was significantly tougher for a while, it seems that for several months now approval odds have been very similar to pre-coronavirus. Your mileage may vary, though

Multiple Credit Card Applications Pose A Credit Risk

The number of new credit accounts in your name and the number of recent applications for new credit account for about 10% of your FICO® Score. While that makes them a less significant component than payment history or and amounts owed , submitting multiple credit card applications within a few months can lead to a brief but potentially significant drop in your credit score.

Every time a lender checks your credit history as part of a credit applicationwhether it’s accepted or rejectedthat request appears on your credit report as a hard inquiry. Lenders consider several applications for credit cards around the same time as a sign that you may not be a responsible user of credit, and that you could be applying for credit lines you can’t afford. A large number of hard inquiries for credit cards is a red flag.

That’s generally not a reason to avoid credit card applications altogether. One hard inquiry typically leads to a score drop of just five points or fewer, and it affects your credit less over time. It will come off your entirely after two years. More than one inquiry in a short time period, however, will likely have a larger effect on your score, and lenders in the future may deny you credit based on the perceived risk.

Know How Long Should You Wait To Apply For Another Credit Card

A general rule on how long you should wait between credit card applications is three to six months. Thats assuming youre going to benefit from getting another card and that you know how to use credit responsibly. More credit cards means more to manage, so you need to stay on top of your balances and payment due dates.

When you apply for a credit card, the bank will look at how many recent hard credit inquiries you have from previous applications. Recent inquiries are one factor banks may use to deny your application, but whats considered too recent will vary by the bank. For most, three to six months will be long enough that your previous application wont count against you.

Multiple hard credit inquiries are seen as more of a risk than just one, so if youve applied for several cards, then you may want to wait longer.

Remember that there isnt any set-in-stone rule on this, and you can get away with a shorter waiting period if you have excellent credit. For example, I once got a credit card, and then one month later, I went on an application spree where I applied for six different cash back cards and was approved for five.

How Many Credit Cards Should I Open At Once

Its certainly OK to have multiple credit cards. Most people do, says Prakash, noting the average American has two to three credit cards. However, that doesnt necessarily mean you should keep your wallet full of plastic. If youre going to have multiple credit cards, its a good idea to follow a few rules.

How Long To Wait Depends On Your Situation

While it’s sensible to limit the number of credit card applications you submit overall, these circumstances make it particularly important:

  • When you’re improving damaged credit: As you rebuild credit, every credit action you take should put you on the path to a strengthened score. A hard inquiry can curb the progress you make by leading to a credit score drop, however slight. Avoid new credit applications unless you’re seeking a secured credit card that specifically aims to bolster your score. After that, wait a minimum of six months between credit card applications so that you have time to improve your credit before a new hard inquiry appears on your credit report.
  • Before or during the mortgage application process: When you apply for a mortgage, lenders look closely at your debt-to-income ratio . That means taking on new credit card debt before or while applying for a mortgage will increase your DTI and potentially affect your likelihood of approval. Plus, the hard inquiry could also lower your credit score, and every point counts during the mortgage process. The higher your score, the more likely you’ll get approved and the better rates and terms you’ll receive.

On the other hand, there are times when applying for a few credit cards around the same time is not as big of a risk:
