If you are instantly approved, Chase will notify you in the same window as your application. In some cases, you might receive a message indicating that Chase will require more time to process your application in which case Chase will let you know of their decision through the mail as soon as possible.

How Long Does It Take To Receive A Credit Card

If youre approved for a new credit card, most companies say that your card will arrive within seven to 10 business days. Thats just an estimate and consumers usually dont have to wait that long to get their credit cards. In many cases, you can receive your new card in the mail in five business days or less.

If you cant wait a week or two to receive your new card, you can find out whether your credit card company offers expedited shipping. You may have to pay a fee for that, though, if the company does offer expedited shipping.

If your card still hasnt arrived after weeks of checking your mailbox day after day, there was probably a snag with your application. Maybe you made a mistake on your application and the credit card company took more time to review your information. Or maybe you applied for the card over the weekend and the issuer couldnt start processing your card until the next business day.

Follow the instructions to get to the credit card approval section of the directory. Once there, youll need to enter your Social Security number to retrieve the application.

High Credit Limits On Other Chase Credit Cards

If you own other Chase credit cards, your experience might be that your newer cards have lower initial credit limits than your first card. A single bank is only going to extend a certain amount of credit to each person depending on their current credit cards and annual income.

You may not qualify if your available credit limit is below the minimum initial limit. A prime example is the Chase Sapphire Reserve which has a minimum $10,000 starting limit. But if Chase is only willing to offer you up to $8,000 in new credit, you may not qualify for the Sapphire Reserve.

The easiest alternative can be choosing the Chase Sapphire Preferred that has a minimum $5,000 initial limit.

A second possibility can be seeing if Chase can reduce your credit limit on an existing card to qualify for a new card. This trick isnt guaranteed to work, but its a bargaining chip worth exploring if you really want a new card.

Getting Approved For A Credit Card

Chase Credit Card Approval Tips | Must Know

Many credit card companies have made applying for a credit card easier than ever by offering online applications. You simply complete the application and submit it to have your information reviewed. It’s not uncommon for credit card companies to return an approval decision within minutes of receiving your application and checking your .

There are, however, instances where you may be waiting longer to get approved for a credit card. For example, say you filled out a paper application and mailed it in. In that scenario, you’d have to wait for the credit card company to receive your application, review your information, then mail an approval decision back to you.

Going the snail mail route could mean waiting a few weeks for a credit card decision versus a few minutes. You could also be in for a long wait if you apply for a credit card that requires excellent credit and your application is flagged for manual review.

When that happens, it means your application has to be reviewed by someone at the credit card company and processed manually. That can slow things down by a few days or even a few weeks, depending on the credit card company’s review policies. If you haven’t heard from the credit card company within a few weeks of applying, you may want to contact customer service to find out what’s happening with your application.

How To Improve Your Chances Of Being Approved

The criteria you need to qualify varies from card to card, but there are a few things you can do that can help set you up for success.

  • Improve your credit score: Since its one of the leading factors of whether or not youll be approved, you should know if your credit score aligns with the credit card youre applying for. If it means having to wait a little longer, it might make sense to work on improving your score to increase your chances of being approved.
  • Be mindful of credit utilization: Chase is going to look at whether or not youve been handling your credit responsibly, and this includes checking how much credit youre currently using. If youre maxing out credit cards or carrying over high balances month to month, theyll see this as a red flag.
  • Keep the Chase 5/24 rule in mind: Chase has been known to operate under a little rule called Chase 5/24. Though these sorts of application rules are unofficial, this one pretty much means if youve signed up for five new accounts in the past 24 months, you stand little chance of being approved for a new credit card within that time frame. This includes all credit card accounts from all credit card issuers not just Chase.

What If My Account Has A Zero Balance When I Make A Credit Card Return

If your credit card has a zero balance when the return is processed, a credit is generally added to the account that can be applied to future purchases. If your card remains inactive with a negative balance for several months, the credit card issuer will likely send you a check for the credited funds. You can also call your credit card company to request that a check for the account credit be mailed to you, thus eliminating the wait.

If there is a balance on your credit card when a refund for a purchase from a previous billing cycle is issued, then the credit will simply be applied to your account, reducing your existing .

If you made a purchase then carry a balance into another statement period you may be charged interest. When you make a return, that interest will not be refunded.

Consumers dont always return items immediately or even within the same billing cycle. Sometimes its not even close. Months may pass between the date of the original purchase and the return of an item. Youll still see the returned funds in your credit card account, but youll be on the hook for any interest that was charged in the meantime.

Alternatives To Chase Cards

If you aren’t approved for a Chase card, you may still have some options, depending on your situation. If you have a decent credit score and you’re over 5/24, you might want to consider applying for a credit card from a different issuer. For instance, The Platinum Card® from American Express is a top travel rewards card that offers comparable and maybe even better perks than the Chase Sapphire Reserve card.

As a new Amex Platinum cardmember, you can earn 100,000 Membership Rewards points when you spend $6,000 in the first 6 months. Plus, this rewards card offers 10X Membership Rewards points on restaurants worldwide and when you Shop Small in the U.S . Amex Platinum cardmembers also get top-tier benefits like airport lounge access, elite status with Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors, a statement credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, and Uber VIP status. While it does have a hefty annual fee of $695 , it’s possible to offset that cost if you can take advantage of this card’s many perks. Note that select benefits require enrollment.

The Amount You Will Travel

Before applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, consider your travel preferences and habits. Look, now is still kind of a strange time to travel.

Among the cards greatest qualities is its high earning rate on travel spending, so this card is better suited if you actually plan to travel often this year.

Then again, its a balancing act. If you travel, like, really often, it may make more sense to apply for the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

While it commands a higher annual fee, it also comes loaded with a significantly higher earning rate: 10x total points on hotel stays and car rentals bought through Ultimate Rewards® and 5x total points on air travel purchased through Ultimate Rewards®.

Thats on top of other travel benefits, including:

  • Complimentary airport lounge access into Priority Pass lounges and Chases own airport lounge brand .

  • A $300 annual travel credit.

  • A 50% point redemption bonus when booking through the Chase travel portal.

Do the math on your own travel spending to see which cards point value makes the most sense.

While the upfront annual fee is brutal, you might find that you actually get more value from the Chase Sapphire Reserve®.

Mailed credit card payments take the longest to post to your account. The credit card payment has to be delivered to your credit card issuer. Then, the payment processing center has to open up hundreds of envelopes, retrieve payments, and post the payments to each account.

Increased mail volume and postal holidays can delay mailed payments around holidays. Make sure you consider this when you mail a credit card payment.

After a long 137 days, my wait to hold my own Chase Sapphire Reserve card is finally over! Okay that is a bit overly dramatic, but I have wanted this card, its 100,000 sign-up bonus points, its 3x earning on travel and dining, its $300 annual travel credit, and more pretty much every day since it first came out last August. I was unable to get it for the first few months after the initial release because I had too many new credit card accounts in the previous 24 months, but thankfully I recently got back under the magic number of five new accounts in the last 24 months and was approved for my own Chase Sapphire Reserve.

I actually got approved just in the nick of time since next week the 100,000 point sign-up bonus will cease being available to online applicants like me and the online sign-up bonus will drop to just 50,000 points. The 100k offer should stick around in Chase branches until March.

I applied and was approved for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card on a Tuesday, and about 48 hours later had it waiting on my front steps on a Thursday. Without my prompting they had sent it UPS Express so it arrived very quickly. When my husband got the card months ago his came via the same method and timeframe.
