How Safe Are Contactless Credit Cards

How to tap to pay with Visa (contactless cards)

Not only does contactless technology save you from having to touch the credit card terminal it protects cardholders from credit card fraud. From time to time, criminals will install an additional part on a terminal at places like gas stations or ATMs that will capture your credit card information. With a contactless credit card, you can ensure your information has less chance of falling into the wrong hands.

How Safe Is Tap And Pay Then

Having these details wont be of much use to any honest citizen, but can be of great value to those who venture on the dark side of the law. Advanced fraudsters could potentially run small transactions off your card as they walk nearby and in most cases you wouldnt receive SMS notifications and possibly not even notice it.

Tap-transactions are usually limited to R100 but being a victim of this crime may lead to more admin and on-hold-music than you can imagine.

Are The Risks Worth The Rewards When It Comes To Tap

Technology is all about convenience whether its keeping us connected, helping us get work done, giving us access to music, movies, and games, or streamlining how we shop and make payments. How Does Tap and Pay by Credit Card Work

As of Sept. 1, 2021, children aged 12 and under are able to ride TransLink services free of charge.

There are three fare zones across Metro Vancouver. The number of SeaBus and/or SkyTrain boundaries you cross during your trip determine your fare.

    • All bus and HandyDART trips regardless of zones crossed, time of day, or day of the week are a 1-Zone fare.

    • SkyTrain and SeaBus require a 1-, 2-, or 3-Zone fare, depending on the time of day and number of zone boundaries you cross during your trip.

    • A single fare is valid for 90 minutes on bus, SkyTrain, SeaBus, and HandyDART.

    • All journeys across the system starting after 6:30 p.m. weekdays and all travel on weekends are a 1-Zone fare.

    An Easier Way To Shop

    How To Avoid The Risks

    • Opt out. If you simply dont think you need tap technology, talk to your bank or call the number on the back of the card. The feature can be deactivated, so you dont have to worry about it at all.
    • Put a cap on. If you want the convenience of tap technology without all of the risk, get in touch with your bank and ask about setting a cap of $10 or $20 dollars to make small purchases simpler.
    • If you find the feature convenient, simply exercise proper caution. If your card is ever stolen or even just misplaced, call your bank right away so they can put a freeze on the account.
    • Check your bank statements regularly. If there are any unusual purchases made or if you fear your card has been compromised, theyll work to correct it. But be warned: getting back lost funds is often a long process.
    • Find out about monitoring card activity for debit and/or credit cards. This will ensure if something suspicious happens, such as an unusually large purchase, you will be notified immediately.

When it comes to tools like tap-and-go technology for debit cards or streamlined payment methods like Apple Pay on your phone, you need to weigh the risks and exercise proper caution. Do you really need to save an extra minute at the checkout line when it means your funds are more easily accessible to potential thieves?

Should You Be Worried About Tap

Forget about swiping your credit card or inserting a chip. Use of tap-and-go cards is catching on because it’s a simple way to speed through the checkout line. But are these contactless cards safe?

Some worry that the technology could allow thieves to commit with special chip readers. But tap and go could be a safe way to go.

Contactless Credit Cards Are the Next Step in Card Security

Tap-and-go credit cards provide about the same level of security as EMV chip cards but more convenience. EMV chips, which came to the U.S. just a few years ago, are much more secure than magnetic strips on the back of cards.

“The only uniqueness between contactless and EMV is, instead of having to insert your card and wait for the transaction to complete,” says Dan Sanford, head of global contactless payments at Visa, “you can just tap to pay and then go on with your life.”

The convenience factor may be one reason behind the rise of contactless payments. More than 100 million tap-and-go cards will be issued in the U.S. by the end of 2019, according to Visa. American Express, Capital One, Chase, Citi and Wells Fargo provide these cards.

Tap-and-go cards use the same near-field communication, or NFC, technology as mobile wallets such as Apple Pay. When you tap your card to the reader, a chip and an antenna in the card send a token via radio waves to complete your purchase.

How To Use A Contactless Credit Card

It is very simple to use a contactless credit card. There is no additional set-up needed. Once you activate your credit card and visit a payment terminal, simply hold your credit card about one inch above the payment terminal, with the contactless symbol pointed at the terminal.

To identify if a terminal is capable of accepting contactless credit cards, be sure to look for the contactless symbol :

If the payment is successful, you will typically hear a “ding” sound. This process takes about one second, whereas inserting the EMV chip of a credit card can take a few seconds to process.

    The Downside Of Convenience

How to Tap to Pay with debit or credit cards

Your fears were right, using a tap card is certainly easier for you: but that also means its easier for your card to be used when its stolen.

    • Should your debit or credit card fall into the wrong hands, a thief only needs to tap your card to make a purchase. No pin, no verification nothing to stop them.
    • This type of hassle-free payment is increasingly common Apple devices now offer Apple Pay, where pre-registered payment information is used to make fast purchases with a single click.

Again, this makes shopping a whole lot easier for you, but it also makes it easier for just about anyone to make a purchase with your phone or card.

    Avoiding Charge For Uncompleted Trips

If you tap in and decide not to complete a trip, you can easily reverse your charges. If you tapped on a bus, please ask the driver to reverse the tap for you. If travelling on rail, you can undo your initial tap in by tapping out of the same station within 21 minutes on SkyTrain and SeaBus, and 60 minutes for West Coast Express.

    How Can You Protect Yourself

All is not lost though as the solution is really simple! One can purchase a myriad of RFID-blocking wallets, purses, card sleeves and cell-phone covers with card-holders.

These sleeves are thin little pieces pf plastic which block radio-frequencies and protect your card from being read by any devices. They are unobtrusive and you can easily forget that you even have it. On a more conscious level you should also be aware of those around you when paying with your contactless card. Be careful to pay and return the card to its protective sleeve quickly dont leave it lying on the cashier counter while packing your groceries.

Also make a habit of checking your card transactions often and look out for any odd transactions.

Do Children Need To Be Accompanied On The Bus

Children 12 and under do not need to be accompanied by a fare paying customer to travel for free on buses because there are no fare gates.

Parents and guardians are responsible for educating and making decisions about the safety and care of their children and determining if their children may take transit unaccompanied. We strongly recommend that parents and guardians are informed about transit use and the safety and care of their children whenever travelling on transit, including when their children travel unaccompanied, and determining whether their children can or should take transit unaccompanied.

Why Do Children Need To Be Accompanied On Skytrain Seabus And West Coast Express But Not On Bus

What Are Contactless Credit Cards? And How Do I Get One?

Children need to be accompanied by a fare paying passenger on SkyTrain, SeaBus, and West Coast Express services because these services are only accessible by tapping fare payment to gain access through the fare gates. With buses, children canboard without needing to pass through a fare gate. We will be working with the Province on simplifying this experience for children on TransLinks gated system in the future.

How Does Tap And Pay Work

Tap and pay technology is a convenient way to make payment without needing to swipe your card. Most credit cards now come with a chip that allows you to simply swipe the card over the card reader and make payment. Its super quick and easy and in most cases you dont need to enter your PIN number. You can usually change the limits for when to enter a PIN or not.

Recently weve seen Apple Pay and other forms of smart devices enabling you to make payment by simply tapping your phone or watch. Same concept by even more convenient.

    Changing Card Payment Technology

With each new technology comes a new wave of crime as fraudsters find innovative ways to buck the system. The risk in the past was that physically handing your card to someone meant that they could either jot down your card details behind the counter or using a small device, skim the details off the magnetic strip.

This was largely avoided with chip cards which require your PIN for each transaction, but things seem to have become easier now as fraudsters can potentially steal your credit card information just by brushing past you in a crowd.

    But can they do that?

What Is A Contactless Credit Card

A contactless credit card allows you to pay for a transaction by simply holding it over a payment terminal.

Contactless payment not only reduces your contact with the terminal, but also processes much faster than “dipping” your credit card. If you are a manager of a coffee shop and have a long line, those few extra seconds that customers must wait for a terminal to process a credit card chip, also known as the Europay Mastercard and Visa chip, can make a real difference.

The technology is great, but isnt currently on all credit cards.

How do you tap to pay?

What is a contactless credit card?

A contactless card has a chip that uses a near field communication antenna to enable close-range payments. Your payment is processed when you tap your contactless card near the Contactless Symbol on a checkout terminal that supports contactless payments.

    How do contactless payments work?

You tap your card to pay instead of inserting it or swiping it at the checkout terminal. Contactless payments are securely completed using short-range wireless technology between a contactless card or payment-enabled device and a checkout terminal that supports contactless payments.

How do I know if my BECU Visa is a contactless card?

If you see the Contactless Indicator on your card, your card can make contactless payments. When you see this symbol at a merchant, it means they accept contactless payments.

Look for this Contactless Indicator on your card:

Do I have to actually tap my card on the checkout terminal?

No. You don’t have to physically tap the card to the terminal. But your card should be close to the Contactless Symbol.

How should I hold my card to the checkout terminal?

The checkout terminal reads the antenna best when the contactless card is flat over the Contactless Symbol, not at an angle.

How long do I need to hold my card to the checkout terminal?

You should hold your contactless card to the terminal for 1-2 seconds.
