Based on TPGs valuations, the 50,000-mile bonus is worth up to $650.

Travel insurance:

Annual fee: $550

The Delta Reserve Amex provides a 3.3% return on purchases made directly with Delta as well as travel protections that can protect you on eligible round-trips. Id personally use the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Chase Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred Credit Card instead of the Delta Reserve when buying flights. But the Delta Reserve offers decent travel protections if you dont have any of these Chase-issued cards or want to earn Delta miles.

Here’s How To Submit A Chase Sapphire Preferred Travel Insurance Claim:

  • Notify the Common Carrier or Rental Agency. Get in touch with the airline, passenger train company, rental car agency, etc., and tell them about the incident. This will begin the company’s claims process. Chase will ask for proof that you notified the transportation company of the incident, so make sure you get copies of all paperwork.
  • Notify Chase of Your Claim Within 20 Days. Call within 20 days of a covered event, or mail written notice to:

    Plan Administrator

  • The American Express Blue Card travel insurance gives you automatic travel protection benefits at no extra charge, as long as you pay for your travel costs with your card. The American Express Blue Card’s travel insurance includes rental car insurance and Global Assist Hotline.

The rental car insurance pays for damage to and theft of rental cars and the coverage is as high as $75,000 per vehicle. To be eligible for coverage, you must pay your entire travel fare with your American Express Blue Card.

The Global Assist Hotline offers 24/7 emergency assistance and coordination services, including medical, legal, and passport referrals, emergency cash wires, and missing luggage assistance, whenever you travel more than 100 miles from home.

Of course, terms & conditions apply. You can learn more by visiting Amex’s benefits page.

Some credit card companies offer travel protection as a cardholder benefit. Before booking with Costco Travel, we recommend speaking with your credit card company to see if travel protection is available to you. If it is, consider using that credit card as your payment method for your Costco Travel purchase. We accept any Visa® or Mastercard®.

Please note, as of September 22, 2019, trip cancellation and interruption protection is no longer provided by the Costco Anywhere Citi Visa® Card. For additional benefit information, visit Costco Anywhere Citi Visa® Card or contact a Citi® expert at .

American Express Platinum Card Travel Insurance

The The Platinum Card® from American Express card is another ultra-premium credit card with a $695 annual fee offering several forms of travel protection

For common occurrences, travelers are protected with up to $500 for unforeseen expenses associated with trip delays of six hours or more. It also will reimburse up to $3,000 for lost luggage. This coverage is in line with the coverage on its competitor, the Sapphire Reserve. Trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance is also provided, but matches the amounts on the Sapphire Preferred: $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per year.

Unlike the Sapphire Reserve, the Platinum card doesnt offer medical or dental coverage. It does provide emergency evacuation, though. The evacuation cost will be covered in full, but their Global Assist Hotline determines what they consider adequate medical care. Theyll decide how and when youre evacuated and which hospital youre evacuated to. After youve arrived at the destination of their choice, youre responsible for all medical bills.

Though were only covering the Platinum card here, its worth knowing that other premium Amex cards also offer travel insurance. Check your benefits guide for details if you carry cards such as the Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express*, or Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card. Terms apply.

Chase Freedom Unlimited Travel Insurance Benefits:

Applies to trips cut short or cancelled because of illness, severe weather, military transfers or other covered situations. Standard on all Chase Freedom Unlimited cards.
    • Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver : Offers secondary coverage against collision damage, theft and towing charges up to the vehicle’s actual cash value. Cardholders must decline the rental agency’s insurance offer for coverage to apply. Standard on all Chase Freedom Unlimited cards.
    • Travel Emergency Services: Provides referrals for medical and legal assistance, arranges for emergency transportation, and helps change travel reservations. Service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Cardholders are responsible for the cost of any goods or services provided. Standard on all Chase Freedom Unlimited cards.
    • Roadside Dispatch: 24/7 hotline for services such as towing , tire changes, jump starts, fuel delivery, and lockout assistance . There is a $59.95 fee per service call. Standard on all Chase Freedom Unlimited cards.

Main Benefit Of Both Paid Policies

Theres no question that a paid policy greatly increases the amount of medical reimbursement available to you in case of injury or illness. With credit card insurance limits of $2,500 for medical treatment, a traveler could quickly exceed the maximum coverage. Paid policies offer ten times the amount of coverageor moreproviding ultimate protection.

The emergency transportation far exceeds that of the Sapphire Reserve and improves upon the Platinum cards coverage, too. Instead of paying for your transportation to the nearest adequate hospital, it will pay to repatriate you all the way to your home country if you prefer. That flexibility can be valuable for peace of mind.

Lastly, paid policies offer non-tangible benefits as well. Most companies include extra resources for policyholders to help you plan or research safety issues for your destination before traveling. There are also assistance hotlines you can contact while traveling to get recommendations on doctors or medical facilities abroad.

What Credit Cards Give You Free Travel Insurance

While many travel rewards cards come with the added benefit of complimentary travel insurance, this isn’t true for all issuers. For example, Barclays and Citi have eliminated all trip insurance benefits from their cards in recent years. We recommend checking out cards from American Express, Chase or Capital One if you’re looking for complimentary travel coverage although limits will vary between each card.

When Reviewing Your Credit Cards Travel Coverage Be Sure To Consider:

What does credit card travel insurance actually cover?
    • The cards coverage limitations and deductibles
    • If coverage extends to your family, or is exclusive to you. If not, can you add your family?
    • If it covers pre-existing medical conditions
    • If your credit card company offers 24/7 customer service
    • If the credit card travel insurance has adequate coverage
    • If youre eligible for the travel insurance your credit card covers

    Other Select Chase Credit Cards

Several other Chase cards, including the United Explorer Card, Chase Freedom Flex and Chase Freedom Unlimited, also provide trip cancellation and interruption insurance. However, if you have a covered loss which is defined similarly to the premium Chase cards discussed in the previous section these cards will only reimburse nonrefundable prepaid passenger fares.

Eligible travel expenses include change fees imposed by a travel supplier to change the date and/or time of prescheduled travel arrangements. Redeposit fees charged by a rewards program administrator are also eligible. Chase may reimburse you up to $1,500 per person per trip. However, there is a reimbursement cap of $6,000 for all covered persons traveling together on the same trip.

    How To File A Claim

The process for submitting a travel insurance claim will vary by issuer. If you have a trip that is unexpectedly canceled or impacted, your first step should be to call the support number on the credit card you used to book your trip. From there, the card issuer can walk you through the claims process. With many issuers, the process is as simple as filling out an online claim form. Keep in mind that deadlines to file a claim vary, so its a good idea to read your cards guide to benefits before booking a trip.

Is The Insurance On Your Credit Card Enough

So, I went and checked for myself. For business, I have the American Express Business Platinum Card . Here is a summary of what is offered for travel insurance:

AmEx Travel Accident Insurance can provide up to $500,000 in accidental death and dismemberment coverage while traveling on a Common Carrier when the entire fare has been charged to the eligible Card. Please read important exclusions and restrictions @ americanexpress.com/TAIterms

So, in short, if you die or get dismembered , you are eligible for up to $500,000 in benefits as long as you paid for the specific ticket in full with the eligible card and the injury happens in transit To be complete, they do also offer Baggage Insurance as well as rental car coverage. They do offer trip cancellation, emergency medical, and other benefits offered with more traditional travel insurance plans but for an additional cost, of course. See AMEX Travel Insurance Plans for more details on their stand-alone travel insurance products.

    Our recommended Travel Insurance Plans:

    • CitiCards

All offer Lost Luggage and Travel Accident coverage similar to what AmEx offers. However, they also include Trip Cancellation, Trip Delay, Travel Assistance, and Auto Rental coverage. None offer the emergency medical benefits from typical travel medical plans.

Should I Get Credit Card Travel Insurance

Unlike many types of credit card travel insurance, stand-alone travel insurance can be purchased at any time before your trip. This often means that, in many situations, youll be covered for cancellation costs if you cant go on your trip – all from the moment you get travel insurance.

On the flipside, because credit card travel insurance isnt purchased, it might only come into effect when you book your flight, or take another action determined by your provider.

Flexibility and customisation is more difficult with credit card travel insurance, whereas stand-alone options provide up-front flexibility to customise policies for your specific purposes. Thats why many people who have unique circumstances prefer the transparency and flexibility of a standalone policy.

However, all travel insurance has degrees of coverage and exclusions, so no matter which option you go with, its important to make sure that you understand exactly what you are and what youre not covered for.

Who Will Be Covered By Credit Card Travel Insurance Because Of Coronavirus

    Credit Card Travel Insurance

There is a circumstance in which your canceled travel would likely be covered for coronavirus and that’s if you actually have it.

Quarantine of you or your travel companion imposed by a physician or by a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction, due to health reasons, is a covered event.Chase Sapphire Reserve Guide to Benefits

If you become ill or receive notice from your physician that travel is not advised to an infected area, or because of your health condition, your credit card travel insurance will likely cover cancellations. And if an authoritative power, such as a governor or mayor, imposes travel restrictions, you may also be covered.

The Sapphire Reserve states, “quarantine of you or your travel companion imposed by a physician or by a competent governmental authority having jurisdiction, due to health reasons,” is a covered event. Likewise, it states in The Platinum Card® from American Express guide to trip cancellation and interruption insurance that a “quarantine imposed by a physician for health reasons” is a covered loss.

So if you are preventedfrom traveling due to contracting the coronavirus, or if your plans were interrupted by a politician’s or physician’s orders you may be covered.

Do Most Cards Offer Travel Insurance

Most rewards credit cards offer some degree of travel insurance, but the specifics can vary wildly from card to card. For example, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card offers travel accident insurance and car rental insurance through Visa, but it doesn’t offer trip cancellation or interruption insurance. Additionally, Citi eliminated most elements of its travel coverage from cards in late 2019.

What Is Not Covered By Trip Cancellation Insurance

It depends on the policy offered by your credit card. But some examples of non-acceptable cancellation reasons include:

    • A pre-existing condition
    • Illness or injury due to alcohol or drugs
    • Acts of terrorism and war
    • Participation in a dangerous sport

An important note: some credit cards may not cover the loss of redeemed rewards. So, that if you used Aeroplan Miles or Air Miles to book a flight, it may not be possible to get back the value of the points that you lost. However, some loyalty programs may offer some flexibility for bookings so be sure to contact your loyalty program to confirm their policy.

Ink Business Preferred: Best For Business Travelers

The Best Credit Cards for Travel Insurance

If youre a business traveler who wants to keep all of your expenses on your business credit card, the Ink Business Preferred has you covered. Youll find that the coverage on the Ink Business Preferred is almost exactly the same as the Chase Sapphire Preferred, which is great for a business card that only costs $95 a year.

Related: Get a highest-ever bonus with these Chase business credit cards.

The main difference between the Ink Business Preferred and other Chase credit cards is that while youre insured if your trip is involuntarily interrupted or canceled, youll only be reimbursed for up to $5,000 per person and up to $10,000 per covered trip. Many other cards cover double that amount, but thats typically only necessary if youre booking a big, lavish trip.

Other travel insurance protections on the Ink Business Preferred include trip delay insurance, baggage delay reimbursement, lost luggage reimbursement, primary auto rental collision damage waiver and travel accident insurance, all comparable to the protections on the personal Sapphire Preferred.
