Disney Credit Card Review: Is It The Best Card For The Happiest Place On Earth
Disneys parks and resorts are a favorite destination for many families, but the costs of a Disney trip can really add up. You probably want to maximize your credit card rewards if youre planning on a family vacation to any Disney theme park, and a Disney credit card may seem like a good way to do that but is a Disney rewards card worth it?
Disney actually offers two rewards credit cards, but the Disney Premier Visa is the only one of the two that offers a reasonable rewards program. But even though you can earn bonus points for several different categories of spending, rewards redemption options are a bit limited with the Disney Premier Visa. So, even if youre about to head to Disneyland so your family can enjoy some fun with Mickey and Minnie, you may find that another rewards credit card is best for you.

Is The Card For You
The Credit One Bank® Wander Card With No Annual Fee may make sense as an additional card for those who want to use it for targeted earning at amusement and recreational parksa category not often specifically rewarded by other cards. Though the annual fee relative of this card, the Credit One Bank® Wander Card, may make sense for the big-spending park goers, this card offers decent rewards that wont require a large spending threshold to offset a high annual fee with rewards earned. For benefits, everyday reward earning or anything else, we recommend looking elsewhere.

Benefits Of The Disney Credit Card
The Disney Premier Visa offers some undeniable perks, including the chance to earn bonus rewards on gas, groceries, and select dining locations, as well as Disney spending. An easy-to-earn signup bonus is also among the benefits of this card.
New cardholders who sign up for the Disney Premier Visa can get a $250 statement credit after spending $500 within three months of opening the account. However, youre eligible for the bonus only if you havent already received a new cardmember bonus for the same card in the past two years.
Chase Disney Rewards
Chase makes it easy to earn rewards with your Disney Premier Visa. You can get 2% back in rewards points when you spend at most Disney locations, gas stations, restaurants, and grocery stores. For all other purchases, you get 1% back. The problem is, redemption isnt as flexible with this card as with most travel cards.
Points can be redeemed for almost all Disney and Star Wars purchases at most Disney locations. This includes resort stays, shopping, theme park tickets, resort dining, and more.
Points can also be redeemed for a statement credit when you purchase airline tickets using your card. Redemptions start at $50 for an airline statement credit when you purchase tickets to any destination. However, you cant use your points as miles to directly buy tickets, nor can you redeem points to help cover other travel costs, such as the cost of an overnight stay at a hotel thats not affiliated with Disney.
Best Overall Credit Card For Disney And Universal
Since theme park tickets most commonly code as either travel or entertainment, your safest bet when deciding which credit card to use is one that awards a bonus on both categories if you have one. Unfortunately, that is admittedly rare.
The Citi Premier Card awards 2x Citi ThankYou points per dollar on entertainment charges and 3x ThankYou points per dollar spent on travel charges. Its also a pretty good card to use for theme park lunches since it awards 2x points per dollar on dining. If you dont want to overthink things, this card is a really good bet.
Citi ThankYou points are transferrable to airline partners and are currently valued by TPG at 1.7 cents each, giving you a return of 3.4 to 5.1 cents in rewards in categories where you earn 2 3 points per dollar spent.
Unfortunately, this card is discontinuing its previous earning structure for current cardholders on April 9, 2021. Starting then, the card will no longer award 3x on travel and 2x on entertainment but instead will award 3x on air travel, hotels and gas stations along with supermarkets and restaurants. Entertainment will no longer be a bonus category on that card.
Once that happens, the best option may be the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card for 4% back on entertainment expenses. However, because all of this is clear as mud, we have received some reports of theme park ticket purchases with the Savor card coding as travel.

Last Resort: Best Cards For Everyday Spending
If you arent sure how a charge will code, using a strong card for everyday spending isnt the worst plan. Thats what TPGs CEO Brian Kelly did when he purchased a pricey Disney VIP tour using his Chase Freedom Unlimited and wanted to be sure he earned a good number of points no matter how it coded.

Why Credit Card Companies Waive Annual Fees For Military
The two relevant laws to this issue are the SCRA or MLA. The SCRA, or Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, is designed to protect SMs from civil suits and financial issues arising from their active duty military service.
The Military Lending Act, or MLA, is a recent law that is designed to prevent predatory lending practices from targeting military servicemembers. It caps the interest rate that any lender can charge military servicemembers at 36% per year.
Note that when I refer to active duty military servicemembers, that means anyone on active duty military orders 30 days or greater. So National Guard and Reservists are eligible for these benefits if activated. Save a copy of your orders to provide to the respective company.

Disney Credit Card Signup Bonuses
One of the reasons many families get a rewards credit card is to take advantage of a generous signup bonus. These bonuses hit your account quickly, usually after meeting a required initial spend in a short period of time. Credit card welcome bonuses are a great way to get some near instant gratification and make significant headway towards free travel.
Some airline and hotel cards regularly offer signup bonuses as large as 50,000-100,000 miles or points. These can sometimes equal over $1000 in travel value depending on how the recipient redeems them.
The Disney cards from Chase, in comparison, offer fairly modest signup bonuses. As of August 2021, the current public offer for the no-annual fee Disney Visa Card is a $150 statement credit after spending $500 on the card within 3 months after account opening. The Disney Premier Visa Card currently offers a $300 statement credit when you spend $1000 in purchases on the card in the first three months.
As the Premier will earn a signup bonus that is $150 more in value, the bonus more than cancels out the $49 difference in annual fee. This makes the Premier card initially more lucrative. For that reason, a lot of folks may want to start with the Premier card for one year for the better bonus and downgrade to the regular card later .
Disney Credit Cards: How They Work
The first step of realizing how unfruitful having a co-branded Disney credit card can be is understanding how their programs stack up to other, better rewards cards. So, lets start there.
First off, Disney offers two rewards cards that purportedly help you earn rewards for use at their parks the Disney Rewards® Visa® Card and a Disney Premier Visa® Card.
As you can see, both cards let you rack up Disney Rewards Dollars good for on-park purchases. The Premier version of the card even lets you redeem points for airfare with any airline, so thats good.
But whats especially egregious to me is the fact that the Premier card charges a $49 annual fee! In exchange, you earn a $200 signup bonus, 2x points at gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and *most* Disney locations, and one point per dollar spent on all other purchases. Considering the fact you can earn double points or more with cards that dont charge an annual fee, its easy to see why this is a bad deal.
But, whats even more annoying is the redemption side of things. You can redeem your points for stays at Disney Parks and Resorts in other words, park tickets and on-property Disney hotels. You can also redeem them for Disney merchandise and Disney cruises.
