You Can Request A Credit Limit Change

3 Of The Biggest Mistakes When Applying For A Secured Credit Card – MyFICO,Bankruptcy

With secured credit cards, you make an initial deposit that becomes your credit limit. If you ever close the card or upgrade to an unsecured card, youll get that deposit back.

The Wells Fargo Secured Credit Card requires a deposit of $300 to $10,000. You can request credit limit increases and decreases in $100 increments. If your credit limit is decreased, youll get a refund for the difference within 30 days. You cant have a credit limit lower than $300.

To qualify for a credit line increase, you cant just overpay your balance any money you pay over the amount due will count toward your next months bill. You have to apply, get approved and make an additional deposit to fund a credit line increase.

Best For Low Interest From A Credit Union

Who’s this for? The DCU Visa® Platinum Secured Credit Card offers one of the lowest interest rates for a no-annual-fee secured card at 11.50% variable.

While we don’t recommend carrying a balance month-to-month , it can be a good idea to choose a low interest secured card if you have a history of carrying balances or you’re looking for a safety net.

There is a higher-than-average $500 minimum security deposit to open the card. But it does come with some additional perks, including travel insurance, auto rental collision damage waiver and extended warranty protection.

Membership to the Digital Federal Credit Union is required, but anyone can join in one of several ways: if you’re a family member of a DCU member, live in select communities, work for select employers or make a one-time contribution to a participating organization.

Your Security Deposit Will Earn Interest

One unique feature that the secure AMEX offers is its interest-earning security deposit. Instead of just going into a bank account as it would with any other secured card, your security deposit for this secured card will take the form of a two-year USAA Certificate of Deposit.

What does this mean, exactly? Well, a certificate of deposit is a savings account option that earns your money interest at a high rate. Because CDs are less liquid than savings accounts, they often earn higher annual percentage yields than your average savings account.

However, CDs are also harder to accessâyouâll be charged a hefty early withdrawal fee if you have to access your CD worth before its predetermined term is up.

But with the American Express secured card, youâll be able to spend your CDâs worth without being saddled with withdrawal fees, even as it accumulates interest.

American Express Optima Vs Avant Credit Card

With a high standard APR and a fairly low credit limit, the Avant card charges a scaling annual fee structure depending on how an applicant finds out about the card .

The cards advertised transparency makes finding information on it slightly easier than the Amex Optima, but with no rewards, no major perks and with the Amex Optimas annual fee falling on the higher end of the Avants annual fee range, these cards are fairly well matched for those who might be applying for both. The major substantive differences are that the Avant has no foreign transaction fees and that the Amex Optimas standard rate APR may be lower than the Avants, depending on the prime rate.
