Types Of Credit Card Points

The primary types of rewards are credit card reward points, airline miles, and cash-back.

Reward points

Cardholders frequently earn reward points on eligible purchases related to travel, dining, or to shopping at department stores, supermarkets, and gas stations. Each credit card offers different rewards rates for each category. Make sure you read the fine print of your contract.

Making purchases with a particular airline or using a travel rewards credit card accumulates miles that you can exchange for flights or other travel expenses. On average, you earn one or two miles for every dollar spent on travel expenses, but this rate can be higher if you are a part of a loyalty program.

USAA Rewards Visa points do not expire as long as your account is open and in good standing. You will forfeit any points you have yet to redeem if you or USAA closes your USAA Rewards Visa account for any reason.

More specifically, once the account is closed, USAA will allow you 90 days to redeem your unused points. After 90 days, youll lose your points and will not be able to get them back.

Similarly, USAA will not allow you to earn or redeem points whenever youre late making the minimum payment.

When should I redeem my credit card rewards?

You should redeem credit card rewards as often as possible, whether theyre points, miles, or cash back. It is important to redeem often because credit card rewards can be devalued or expire, depending on the type of rewards they are.

The longer credit card rewards earnings stay in your account unredeemed, the more time theyre subject to devaluation, the more likely they are to expire, and the less you actually get to benefit. Rewards dont get you anything until you put them to use, after full answer

Frequent Travelers May Want to Save Up

Miles and points can definitely serve people better when theyre saved up to redeem for travel. But expired or devalued miles and points wont take you anywhere. Thats why its a good idea to pay for travel with a combination of points/miles and cash, if the rewards program allows it.

Do Southwest Points Expire

Now, lets get to the question at hand

Southwest points USED to expire after 24 months of inactivity UNLESS you held a Southwest credit card.

That kept your Southwest points active even if there was no activity in your account.

The airline has since changed their policy, so that Southwest points NEVER expire no matter what.

We love this change, and its one of the many reasons we love to fly Southwest!

The only way you can lose your Southwest points is to USE them OR close your Rapid Rewards account entirely. Thats good news!

Keep in mind that Southwest Companion Pass-qualifying pointsexpire at the end of each calendar year on December 31.

You can still use them to book free flights, but you start with 0 qualifying Southwest Companion Pass points at the beginning of each calendar year on January 1.

Transfer Points From Another Rewards Program

Some rewards programs allow you to transfer your points and miles to other rewards programs: Chase Ultimate Rewards® and American Express Membership Rewards, for example. Say your JetBlue TrueBlue points are about to expire all you need to do is transfer some of your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points over to your JetBlue account to generate activity and effectively reset the expiration period for that account.

How Much Are Credit Card Points Worth

In most cases, a point is worth one penny. That means 100 credit card points are worth $1 and 10,000 credit card points are worth $100.

Many cards offer that 1%, or a penny per dollar, as a default, with extra rewards in certain spending categories.

With cards such as Chase Freedom Flex and Discover it® Cash Back, for example, you get 5% back for every dollar spent in certain categories . These change every three months and you have to remember to activate before each quarter begins. From October through December, for example, Discover it is offering its 5% rewards on, and purchases.

In some cases, your credit card points may increase or decrease in value depending on how you redeem them which is why its important to understand exactly how your credit card points can be redeemed and how your redemption options affect your point value.

Can You Buy Points

When do credit card rewards, airline miles, hotel points ...

You can buy Citi ThankYou points at $0.025 per point. Points must be purchased in increments of 1,000 for $25. If you need additional points for a redemption, you can purchase points online during the redemption process. You can also call the Citi ThankYou Service Center to buy points.

In most cases, it’s not a good deal to buy points. The high price means you’ll be lucky to break even on the purchase, and it’s more likely that you’ll end up losing money. The only time buying ThankYou points makes sense is when you have a redemption ready that will get you more than $0.025 per point, and you don’t quite have enough points to cover it.

How To Use Your Points Before Closing A Chase Card

Let’s say that you’re going to close your Chase card, or Chase is going to close it for inactivity. Here’s how you can earn the most value with your Chase points:

  • Open another Ultimate Rewards® card: Your Ultimate Rewards® points pool into one rewards account across multiple points cards. For example, say you’re closing or downgrading a Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card. You can pool those points with earnings from a Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which allows you to retain your Ultimate Rewards® points.
  • Transfer them: If you use a particular airline or hotel frequently, you can transfer your points there and book travel with them later. This method works well when you don’t want to use your points yet. Keep in mind that airline and hotel points usually do expire, so you need to use them before that happens.
  • Book travel through the Ultimate Rewards® portal: This only works if you have travel to book immediately. You can go through the Ultimate Rewards® portal to book in cash and receive a fixed rate for your points.
  • Redeem for cash back: Consider it a last resort, but Ultimate Rewards® points are worth $0.01 per point when redeemed for cash back. While that’s a solid rate, this method isn’t ideal as a first choice, since higher-value options are available.

What To Do If You Let Your Points And Miles Expire

If you do slip up and let your points or miles expire, you may be able to pay to get those rewards reinstated. Only two airline programs publicly advertise this option , but it’s still worth calling your loyalty program’s customer service to see if there are any options for you.
