The Best Credit Cards With Car Rental Insurance Can Save You Money

Is it easier to be approved for a card with American ...

Using one of the credit cards reviewed above can save you money by exempting you from having to pay the high insurance rates charged by the car rental company. The rental car company rates for car insurance can add tens if not hundreds of dollars to the cost of your auto rental.

All of the cards above offer primary rental insurance. Primary rental car coverage is coverage that takes effect before any other insurance coverage.

So, if you do happen to get into an accident or otherwise need to file a claim, you wont have to file that claim with your own insurance company. Instead, the credit card company will take care of the claim. This can help keep your own personal auto insurance rates lower.

While many credit cards offer some sort of car rental insurance, you should understand the differences in coverage types and limits. If your credit card only offers secondary car rental coverage, that means that it only comes into play after you use your personal auto insurance and any other coverage that may be in place. If you have the option, its best to pay for your car rental with a card that offers primary insurance and a high coverage amount.

How To Choose The Right Credit Card For Car Rental Insurance

Before settling on a credit card to use for its car rental insurance, it’s important to pin down a few details about what is and isn’t covered.

Primary versus secondary: Of course, the most basic thing you’ll need to know is whether your card comes with primary or secondary insurance. That will help you decide whether to use its protections, to purchase a policy from the rental agency, or to investigate your options through your other insurance alternatives, such as a homeowners or renters policy.

What is covered: Each credit card has its own terms and conditions for rental car coverage that might include the types of vehicles covered, maximum dollar amounts, and more.

What isn’t covered: It’s just as important to know what’s not protected by your card’s insurance. With the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, for example, most private passenger vehicles, such as automobiles and minivans, are covered. But if you rent an RV or a fancy sports car, you might be out of luck. Likewise, only rentals of 15 days or under in your country of residence, and fewer than 31 days abroad, are covered. As with many other cards, the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card’s auto collision damage waiver policy does not extend to damage caused by off-road driving or personal injuries, among other exclusions.

Can I Cover My Medical Conditions With My Credit Card Cover

In most cases, pre-existing medical conditions will not be covered by travel insurance that comes with your credit card, but you may be able to get cover for this by contacting the insurer and paying an additional premium. You will need to check the Product Disclosure Statement , also known as policy wording to find out whether pre-existing medical conditions are covered. The alternative is a standalone travel insurance, learn more about covering your medical conditions.

Lost Stolen Or Delayed Luggage Insurance

In my opinion, the best travel insurance packages should include lost, stolen, or delayed luggage insurance since theres a good chance regular travellers will need to make a claim for this at some point.

This type of insurance allows you to claim essential items if your luggage is delayed for a specified period of time. The term essential item is somewhat ambiguous, but generally speaking, you should be able to purchase any clothing you needincluding business attireuntil your luggage is returned to you as long as the total doesnt exceed the amount that youre covered for.

If your bag is lost or stolen, the same maximum amount provided by your insurance applies, but it would only be relevant to what you lost. Theres often a line in the fine print that limits the maximum amount per item, so if youre carrying any valuables, its best to keep them in your carry-on luggage.

If you feel that this type of insurance is important to you, then consider the . It offers up to $1,000 in reimbursement for baggage delayed for a period of only four hours or moremost policies require a delay of at least six hours or more.

What Credit Cards Give You Free Travel Insurance

While many travel rewards cards come with the added benefit of complimentary travel insurance, this isn’t true for all issuers. For example, Barclays and Citi have eliminated all trip insurance benefits from their cards in recent years. We recommend checking out cards from American Express, Chase or Capital One if you’re looking for complimentary travel coverage although limits will vary between each card.

Travel insurance helps you get your money back when things go wrong with your trip. And it remains a debate: Do you really need it, and is it worth it?

Personally, Ive often skipped travel insurance, preferring to put the extra money toward my trip. Yet as I pulled into the airport after a winter ski trip to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in my SUV rental, a snowplow kicked up a rock and a crack extended across the windshield. And just like that, I got in the dreaded rental car accident.

Thankfully, I had rented my car with my Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card, which covered rental car windshield reimbursement. Note that I had also specifically opted out of the car rental’s insurance coverage offered at the counter, which is a requirement in order to allow my credit card coverage to kick in. Terms apply.

A number of credit cards provide various types of travel insurance when you use your card to pay for flights, rental cars and other travel expenses. So do you need additional travel insurance? Maybe not.

The Amex Platinums 5x for airfare booked directly through airlines or Amex Travel is impressive. But the lack of baggage delay protection and the requirement of round-trip travel for some benefits usually discourages me from using Amex-issued cards for flights.

If My Credit Card Has Travel Coverage Do I Need To Buy Additional Travel Insurance

If you have one of the credit cards featured in this guide, you may not need an additional travel insurance policy. However, make sure you read the fine print of your credit card’s benefits guides to make sure the travel coverage is sufficient for your needs and so you don’t have any unpleasant surprises like finding out you aren’t eligible for coverage when it’s too late.

On the other hand, if you want some extra peace of mind, or if there’s a good chance you may cancel your non-refundable trip, it’s worth looking into supplementary travel insurance. Also keep in mind that you may need to purchase travel insurance if you’re traveling for an extended period, since most credit card travel insurance only applies for about a month-long trip.

How To Make Sure Your Next Trip Is Covered

What does credit card travel insurance actually cover?

With so many credit card travel insurance protections and the many nuances to each benefit, youll want to first consult with your credit card company to find out the exact coverage terms on your card. You might find that youll only be covered if your trip is over a certain number of miles from your home or a minimum number of days away and in some cases, even a maximum number of days.

Some credit cards also require that you pay for the trip entirely with your credit card, while other cards allow you to just put a portion of the trip on the respective card. In some cases, the rules can even differ across protections on the same card. But if you only need to put a portion of the trip cost on your card to be covered, you could use points or miles to pay for your trip and just put the taxes on the card.

With the coronavirus pandemic dragging into 2021, its likely that travel may be touch and go for at least a portion of the upcoming year, and youll want to be protected if you have unanticipated issues before or during your trip. So before you book your 2021 travel, make sure you know what travel insurance protections are important to you, and use a credit card that will cover you in case the worst happens.

Am I Covered If I Go Skiing

Like all insurances, some limitations apply to the travel insurance that comes with your credit card or rewards card and skiing is often one of them. Winter sports activities such as skiing and snowboarding are often excluded from credit card travel insurance, so if you’re planning on hitting the slopes you should contact your provider to ensure that you have adequate cover for your planned activities. If not, opt for a standalone ski insurance policy.

Is Credit Card Car Rental Insurance Enough

Whether the credit cards car rental insurance is enough depends on which credit card you use and your own personal risk tolerance. Another factor to consider is what other sources of insurance you have that would also apply.

A good rule of thumb is that if you have your own personal auto insurance that can act as primary coverage OR if you have a credit card with primary insurance, then you may consider that your credit card rental insurance is enough.

Dig through the fine print and understand the insurance limits you have either personally or through the credit card. Knowing what those limits are and how likely you would be to hit them is a good indicator of whether you should go ahead and buy the excess insurance that is offered by the rental car company.
