Which Amex Platinum Hotel Status Is More Valuable

Personally I think Hilton Honors Gold status is significantly more valuable than Marriott Bonvoy Gold status. Why? Hilton status gets you breakfast, lounge access, or a hotel credit, which Id consider to be among the most valuable perks of elite status.

That being said, ultimately either status can come in handy, if you find yourself staying at a hotel belonging to either Hilton or Marriott. Some status is better than none.

Can You Have The Amex Gold And Amex Platinum At The Same Time

Yes, you can you carry both the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express at the same time. You can even add the American Express® Green Card into the mix if it strikes your fancy Amex allows cardholders to carry up to 10 different former charge cards at once, and it issues fewer than ten of these, which means you can have one of each in your name.

Can You Upgrade Your Amex Gold Card To The American Express Platinum Card

Its possible to upgrade American Express cards in some cases, but only from certain cards to certain other cards. Former charge cards, like the American Express® Gold Card and The Platinum Card® from American Express , can only be upgraded or downgraded to other former charge cards. And typical credit cards, like the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express , can only be upgraded and downgraded among themselves. You cant, for example, upgrade from a former charge card to a regular credit card, or vice versa.

If you want to upgrade from Amex Gold to Platinum, you should be eligible to do so after one year. And if you decide you dont get enough value out of the Platinum to offset its rather large annual fee, then you can downgrade, too.

Before diving right into a card upgrade, call the number on the back of your card to ask if Amex is offering an upgrade bonus. Compare that bonus to what youd earn if you applied for the card outright, and then decide which is the right move.

Does It Make Sense To Have The Amex Gold And Platinum

Having both the Amex Gold and Amex Platinum can make sense if you use both cards enough to offset the annual fees.

You can use the American Express® Gold Card for its dining credits and 4x purchase rewards on dining and supermarket purchases. Then, you can use The Platinum Card® from American Express for travel bookings to earn 5x Membership Rewards along with the various travel credits and elite traveler benefits.

Earn A Simple Flat Rate On All Of Your Spending

Using the Amex Platinum and the Amex Gold does require a bit more mental energy than a card that earns the same flat rate on every purchase. If you feel like its more hassle than its worth to remember which card to use when, consider a card like the Citi® Double Cash Card, which has no annual fee and earns a net 2% cash back on every purchase you make1% when you make a purchase and another 1% when you pay your bill.

The American Express Gold Card is slightly easier to stomach thanks to its $250 annual fee. You also can choose between the Gold and Rose Gold, if that is something that interests you.

With that said, youll receive a smaller welcome bonus and lower earning rates with the Gold Card. Youll also get a different set of statement credits with this card, including the dining credit .

Overall, the American Express Gold Card is a solid option to consider if:

Which Card Is Best For You

If you cant choose between the American Express Gold Card and the Platinum Card, its important to keep your spending habits in mind as you decide on a new card.

The Platinum Card from American Express likely makes the most sense for frequent travelers. If you fly or stay at hotels several times a year, it might be one of the best travel credit card options. You can take full advantage of all the offered credits, helping to offset the hefty $695 annual fee. But if you travel only occasionally, you wont be able to enjoy the full value of those credits, possibly making the extra cost not worthwhile.

If youre looking for more of a general rewards card rather than a travel rewards card, the American Express Gold Card may be a better choice. Youll earn more points on everyday expenses, such as grocery store purchases. With a lower fee, you could more quickly recoup your costs and enjoy your rewards.

Amex Gold Perks And Credits

If you have the American Express Platinum or Gold, you NEED THIS!

The Amex Gold is one of the best-looking cards on the market, especially if you get the Rose Gold metal version. Granted, it has a much shorter list of benefits than the Amex Platinum. But, the Amex Golds perks still add a ton of value to the card.

First off, cardholders can enjoy up to $240 in annual statement credits, including:

  • Up to $120 in annual Uber Cash Up to $10 in Uber Cash each month once you add your card to your Uber app. Enrollment required.
  • Up to $120 in annual dining credits Up to $10 a month at the following merchants: Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Ruths Chris Steak House, Boxed and participating Shake Shack locations. Enrollment required.

If youre capable of maxing out these benefits, this will leave you with an out-of-pocket cost of just $10 a year after considering the cards $250 annual fee . Thats not even counting the value to be had from my four other favorite lesser-known perks of the Amex Gold.

Like the Amex Platinum card, Amex Gold cardholders will also get 12 months of complimentary access to Eats Pass if they enroll by Dec. 31, 2021.

Amex Green And Amex Platinum Benefits

However, if the Amex Gold is too pricey for you, you might consider the Amex Green card. It has a lower $150 annual fee, and in addition to the new complimentary Uber Eats Pass membership, it comes with up to $100 in annual Clear credits as well as up to $100 in annual LoungeBuddy airport lounge credits. The Amex Green also earns 3 points per dollar on travel and at restaurants worldwide , and 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

And if you expect to be traveling a lot in 2021 once travel gets back to normal, you can take a look at the Amex Platinum. Its a card thats designed for road warriors, so in addition to the new complimentary Uber Eats Pass membership, it has a lot of luxury travel perks, such as up to $200 in annual airline fee credits, up to $200 in Uber Cash, up to $100 in Saks Fifth Avenue credits and access to the American Express Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs and Priority Pass lounges around the world as well as a slew of other benefits.

At $695 a year , youll be putting out a lot of money for the Amex Platinum card. But the travel perks can easily pay for themselves if you can use them, and the card can make flying a little bit easier, especially if youre looking for an airport lounge while youre traveling during these stressful times.

How Many Amex Cards Can You Have

Over the years American Express has been fairly lenient when it came to limiting the number of cards an individual could hold at once. But somewhat recently theyve implemented a four-card limit on Amex credit cards.

The Points Guy confirmed this change, with an Amex spokesperson saying this regarding the four credit card limit:

Yes, we made that change, because, in general, we see very few of our customers actively using four or more cards at the same time. If a Card Member has four or more cards already with American Express and some of them are inactive, we will recommend they consider consolidating.

Amex also confirmed that the limit was ten on cards that have no spending limits. Heres what you need to know regarding Amex cards with and without spending limits:
