Can You Combine Amex Points

Don't Miss

Transfer Points To Travel Partners

The BEST Way to Use Amex MR Points for TRAVEL

AmEx has multiple transfer partners more than any other major U.S. card loyalty program and you can transfer your points directly to those partners’ loyalty programs. The transfer rate varies by partner, but in most cases, it’s 1-to-1, meaning that when you transfer 1,000 Membership Rewards points, you get 1,000 points in the partner program.

One thing to keep in mind: When transferring Membership Rewards points to U.S. airlines, you’ll owe a fee of 0.06 cents per point, up to a maximum of $99. For a 1,000-point transfer, that comes out to 60 cents.

For details on transfer ratios, see AmEx’s website.

The exact value you ultimately get per point depends on which program you transfer to and how you redeem the points within that program, but NerdWallet estimates the overall transfer value at 2 cents per point.

What Do We Mean By Combining Membership Rewards

Before getting into the weeds, lets talk about what we mean by combining Membership Rewards right now. Combining Membership Rewards is a little different from combining other types of points. Unfortunately, you cant combine Membership Rewards between two peoples accounts.

Instead, lets focus on the goal of combining Membership Rewards. The goal is to be able to transfer them to an airline or hotel account that doesnt belong to the primary cardmember.

Amex Transfer Partner Sweet Spots

If your favorite airline is not listed, like American Airlines or United Airlines, there are still ways to redeem with those carriers through their partners. Here are a few of the sweet spots to consider when using your American Express rewards:

American Express Membership Rewards Points

Can you be Approved for 2 American Express Cards in One ...

Amex Membership Rewards are the flexible points earned by many personal and business cards from American Express. These cards typically earn a base of 1 point per $1 spent, with some Amex cards earning bonus points based on where you make your purchases. If you have multiple personal or business Amex cards, all of your Membership Rewards points are combined into one pool of points.

You can redeem points in numerous ways, including booking travel through American Express Travel, transferring to airline or hotel partners, gift cards, and statement credits. In general, redeeming points for gift cards, statement credits, and online shopping offer the lowest redemption values for Amex points. You can book flights, upgrades, and Fine Hotels & Resorts through Amex Travel at 1 cent per point. Generally, you can find the best value by transferring your points to a travel partner to book an award reservation.

Make Use Of Flying Blues Weird Region Definitions

Flying Blue has some very odd region definitions that can make for some incredible awards! Specifically, consider the fact that Israel, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and Libya, are all considered part of Europe.

Right away, this means 50,000 miles for round-trip itineraries in economy class from the U.S. and 100,000 miles for round-trips in business class. But wait, it gets even better! Since these locations are all considered part of Europe, Promo Awards will also be available to these locations.

The Amex Card Trifecta

There are three cards the Amex trifecta that can net you lots of points, particularly if you often spend in each card’s bonus categories. Beyond that, you’ll find several other lucrative benefits, which vary for each card.

The Platinum Card® from American Express earns 5x points on flights booked directly with airlines, and on flights or hotel stays booked through Amex Travel. The annual spending cap for the combined categories is $500,000, which is quite a bit of spending that can earn you bonus points.

Because of the 5x multiplier, I use my Platinum Card to book flights. I prefer to book hotel stays directly with the hotel to ensure I’ll get tier credit toward elite status, which you don’t always get when you book through a third party like Amex Travel.

I’ve also saved a lot of money through Amex Offers. .

Us To Europe And North Africa

A flight from the U.S. to Europe or North Africa booked with Alitalia will only cost 50,000 miles round-trip in economy class or 80,000 miles round-trip in business class. Both classes of service present significant savings over a lot of other airline program offerings.

Remember that Alitalias partner award chart is much worse for redemptions than their own award chart. And unfortunately, Alitalia devalued their own award chart starting on . This means that round-trip economy will cost 60,000 miles, while business will cost 140,000 miles.

Booking a flight with Alitalia miles transferred from Amex Membership Rewards is a great way to get to Italy, but there are many other options in Europe for the same number of miles if delicious pasta isnt your thing.

Hot Tip: Alitalia is also a transfer partner of Marriott, so you can top up your Alitalia miles if you have a lot of extra Marriott Bonvoy points!

Chase Ultimate Rewards Business Cards

The terms for points transfers from a Chase Ink Business card are slightly different. You are allowed to transfer points to other owners of the business. Chase has been known to shut down accounts for offenses less serious than gaming the points transfer system, so I would tread carefully here and follow the rules to the letter.

What if youre in a questionable situation, such as transferring points to someone with a different last name or someone with a different billing address than yours? In this case, you should call Chase first and double-check that the transfer youre making is within the programs terms.

The first is by leveraging Rakuten, one of our favorite online shopping portals here at TPG. When you click through Rakuten to a participating merchants website, you can earn bonus Amex points for every dollar you spend.

If you dont currently have an account, you can sign-up here and enjoy a one-time bonus of $30 when you spend at least $30 within 90 days of becoming a member.

If, on the other hand, youre getting ready to buy or sell your home and arent currently working with a real estate agent, you can earn Membership Rewards points through a company called RBN. When youre matched with a participating agent and complete the purchase or sale of a house, youll earn up to 1 Amex point for every $1 of the final price after closing.

Fly United In Business Or First Within The Us

Singapore Airlines has a handful of other sweet spots in their award chart, and flights on United within the U.S. in business or first class is one of them.

You can redeem KrisFlyer miles to fly on United Airlines within the U.S. for only 23,000 miles in business class or 34,500 miles in first class.

As a comparison, United charges 50,000 miles to fly business class round-trip within the U.S. and 70,000 miles to fly first class within the U.S.

If youre planning to redeem your miles for domestic premium cabin travel, use Singapore Airlines miles instead of trading in Amex points for United miles to see your savings add up quickly!

Miles are deducted evenly for redemptions across all accounts linked to the Household Account.

How To Transfer Flexible Points From Your Account

There are currently 5 major flexible point programs: American Express Membership Rewards, Capital One Miles, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and Marriott Bonvoy. When you earn points in each of these programs, you can transfer those points to the loyalty programs partners.

For example, when you earn Amex Membership Rewards points, you can transfer those points directly to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer to book a Singapore Airlines first class flight.

To highlight a more nuanced example, you can earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points, transfer those points directly to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and book an ANA first class flight because Virgin Atlantic and ANA are partners. Make sense?

In this article, we will focus on transferring points to airline and hotel partners. We will also cover the rules for each program, as each major flexible point program treats combining and transferring points from your account differently.

Each program will be broken up into 2 parts: combining points and transferring points.

Dont Transfer Points Speculatively

As always, I simply must advise that you dont transfer points speculatively. Only transfer points when youre ready to book travel.

Ive seen it time and time again when someone transfers points expecting to book a trip in the next few weeks. In that time, award space may not be available on the airline that you hoped it would be. Be sure to understand the basics of award bookings before doing any transfers, and be sure the award space is there.

Even more disheartening is if you transfer points and then the airline or hotel program devalues their award program. When a devaluation occurs, youll need more points to book the same flight or hotel. When this happens, the program you chose to transfer points to may not be the best choice anymore.
