How To Send Money With Apple Cash In The Messages App
Apple Cash is Apple’s system for sending and receiving payments with Apple Pay through the Messages app. Setting up Apple’s payment service also adds an Apple Cash card to the Wallet app on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. This card allows you to use your balance to make payments in physical stores or online, just as you would with any other credit or debit card attached to Apple Pay. Here’s how to send Apple Cash with Messages on your iPhone or iPad.
What Is Apple Cash
Apple Cash is a feature of the Apple Wallet smartphone App. It allows iOS and iPadOS device users to transfer money to other people who have Apple Wallet.

Express Transit Or Express Travel
Since iOS 12.3, supported credit and debit cards, as well as some stored-value transport cards can be used to pay for journeys on certain public transport networks without requiring the user to authenticate the payment with Touch ID or Face ID. Once a supported credit, debit or transit card is selected as a user’s Express Transit/Travel card, the user can simply hold their device near the card reader, for example at ticket barriers, to initiate or authorise payment for the journey.
Within iOS, the functionality is labelled as “Express Transit” in North America and “Express Travel” in most other English-speaking countries, because “transit” in most varieties of English has a narrower meaning of travelling through a jurisdiction or airport during a journey as opposed to travel or transport in general.
On iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and later, Express Transit/Travel cards can be used up to five hours on Power Reserve after the device has powered off due to a drained battery. The typical low-battery icon will display with “Express Cards Available” text appearing at the bottom of the display, letting users know that Express Transit/Travel is still available for usage.
(Express Mode more generally is also available for contactless student ID cards stored in the Wallet app as well as digital car keys.
How Safe Are Apple Pay And Apple Cash
According to Apple, security features are built into the hardware and software of its devices to help protect transactions. As further protection, you must set a passcode on your device to use Apple Pay, or you can use Face ID or Touch ID.
Also, according to Apple, it doesnt store, nor can it gain access to, the original credit, debit or prepaid card numbers that you use with Apple Pay. When you use Apple Pay with credit, debit or prepaid cards, Apple doesnt keep transaction information that can be linked to you.
Apple Cash relies on Face ID or Touch ID to verify transactions, adding a level of security. Plus, theres no physical card, and your account number is never visible.
Regardless of security precautions, theres always a level of risk involved with any payment method. There are many bank scams used by criminals to gain access to financial information.
A study released in September 2021 by researchers at the University of Birmingham and University of Surrey found that Apple Pay and Visa vulnerabilities could let hackers bypass an iPhones Apple Pay lock screen to carry out contactless payments.
If youre uncomfortable using Apple Cash or Apple Pay, consider alternative methods to spend, send and receive money.
