Venmo allows you to link both credit and debit cards to your account to use as payment methods. In terms of security, youre better off using a credit card in place of debit, as credit cards have more legal protections governing fraud compared to debit cards.

- Transferring money from your Venmo balance to your bank account is free for a standard transfer, which takes one to three days, according to the companys website.
- Instant transfers , require an eligible debit card or bank account and carry a 1% fee , according to the site.

How Does Venmo Work
Venmo allows you to send money to other Venmo users, including friends and family members with a Venmo account. You can also pay partner businesses using your Venmo app. And because Venmo is owned by PayPal, you can typically use it to pay at businesses displaying a PayPal logo.
Funds can be transferred to others via Venmo simply by inputting their Venmo username, phone number, or email address used to register their Venmo account. The money you send comes from a linked bank account, a debit or credit card, or your Venmo balance. And received funds can also be transferred quickly to a linked bank account.
One thing that sets Venmo apart from other services, however, is that your transaction but not payment amount displays on Venmo’s social feed. Often, people who pay with Venmo leave fun comments on this feed. As an added perk, you can opt to find friends who have Venmo accounts by syncing your Facebook account or phonebook contacts.

Heres How To Pay A Car Payment With A Credit Card:
- Mobile payment services: One way to pay your car loan or lease with a credit card is to use a mobile payment app such as Venmo or PayPal as a middleman. These applications allow you to transfer money from user to user, and you can fund them with a credit card.
So, for example, you could use your credit card to pay a friend or family member through the app, and they can then make your car payment for you or give you the money to do it yourself. Just make sure you really trust the person, and be careful because payments may count as purchases or cash advances, depending on the service and the credit card issuer. But either way, there are fees involved. Venmo, for example, charges 3% of the transaction amount.
- Money transfer services: Companies like MoneyGram and Western Union allow you to directly pay a collection of participating billers, and you can fund the transaction with a credit card. However, this may be treated as a cash advance, which would mean expensive fees and interest charges would apply, in addition to the fees charged by the service. You can learn more about how this works from our explanation of how to transfer money from a credit card to a bank account.
The bottom line is that these options are far from ideal and should only be considered if youre in a real bind, or if you do the math and somehow find an opportunity to save. That could be the case if youre able to transfer part of an auto loan to a 0% balance transfer credit card, for example.
How Secure Is Venmo

Venmo takes several steps to protect users, including using encryption to protect account details and storing that information on servers in secure locations. You can also set up multifactor authentication and a PIN code for further protection. Venmo recommends using the app for payments to people you know and trust.

Link As Bank Account Manually
If you don’t see Plaid as an option to link your bank account, you can do so manually. Youll need your Step account and routing number to do this.
You can find these in the main menu under account information / Account & Routing Information.Once you have these numbers:
Open the Venmo app
Select Manual Verification
Enter Step Routing and Account numbers
Your Step bank account may appear as a bank account from Evolve Bank & Trust who is our bank partner.
Youll see two deposits and two withdrawals on your Step transaction history over the next three days, each $1 or less. To verify your bank account, enter those amounts into the Venmo app.
Once your Step account is verified, you can tap the main menu then Transfer to Bank to move money from Venmo to Step. Transactions will process in 1-3 business days. You can also use your Step bank account as the funding source to make payments. This will typically go through on Venmo immediately, but may take 1-3 business days to withdraw the funds from your Step account.
How Much Do Money Transfer Apps Cost
The best money transfer apps are free to download, but costs vary depending on how you use them. Most services offer free bank transfers at a standard speed of 1 to 3 business days, but charge fees if you want to pay with a credit card and/or speed up the delivery to your bank account. International money transfers vary based on the country’s exchange rates and bank fees, but you may still be able to choose a standard or economy delivery versus a more expensive express delivery. Be sure to check fees before assuming that all money transfers are free.

What Happens If I Send A Venmo Payment To The Wrong Person Or For The Wrong Amount
Once you send money via Venmo, its gone. Venmo payments cannot be canceled.
One exception: If you sent the payment to a new user meaning you paid an email address or phone number that isnt associated with an active Venmo account yet you can go ahead and cancel the payment, says Sinlao.
There are several controls Venmo has in place to help users avoid sending money to the wrong person, one of which is an automatic flag to a sender when we have reason to believe they might be transacting with the wrong user, says Erin Mackey, spokesperson for Venmo.
For instance, indications that the sender and recipient, both of whom must hold Venmo accounts, dont know each other, she adds. We look at information such as whether the sender and recipient have previously transacted on Venmo or share any friends on Venmo. In the event they have not previously transacted or share friends, Venmo will ask the sender to confirm the recipients identity by entering the last four digits of their phone number as an added security measure to avoid paying the wrong user.
If you send the wrong amount or to the wrong person, Venmo recommends you ask the recipient to return it. If you dont hear from the person who received the funds by mistake or need help sending a charge request, Venmo suggests contacting its support team.
Find out if your bank offers recourse, too, says John Breyault, vice president of public policy, telecommunications and fraud for the National Consumers League.
