How Much Is A Credit Card Reward Point Worth

Capital One Venture Credit card review: Are the points worth it?

In most cases, a single credit card reward point is worth $.01 per dollar. For example, if a credit card offers a sign-up bonus of 50,000 points for spending a certain amount of money within the first three months of opening the account, the cash conversion value of the points is typically $500.

Some credit card issuers will offer enhanced redemption value if the points are redeemed in a very specific way. For example, the pays 100,000 points when you spend at least $4,000 in purchases in the first three months of opening your account.

Those points have a conversion value equal to $1,000. But when you redeem through Chase Ultimate Rewards® theyre worth $1,250. In that way, the points have a redemption value of 1.25 cents per dollar spent.

One significant difference between credit card reward points and cash back is that the conversion can be a bit more complicated. Its important to read the fine print on any reward points based cards to learn exactly what your points are worth, and what they can be redeemed for.

Is This The Best Time To Get A Southwest Credit Card

Its no secret that one of the biggest perks of applying for a Southwest credit card is to get one step closer to earning the Southwest Companion Pass, which is valid for the rest of the year its earned, plus the entire following year. If you apply for a Southwest card now or even two and earn the Companion Pass soon after, youll only have it for slightly over a year through Dec. 31, 2022.

But if you dont think youll be traveling that much during the rest of 2021, you can still apply for any of these cards now and get these great bonus offers, but hold off on meeting the minimum spending requirement until 2022 to earn the pass then. Youll then end up close to two years with a Southwest Companion Pass, as youll have it for the rest of 2022 and all of 2023.

When Should You Pay A Credit Card Surcharge To Earn Points

How Rewards Credit Cards (Personal & Business) Are Worth ...
  • James

For years, airlines around the world made huge profits by charging customers exorbitant fees in order to pay for flights with a credit card. People had different reasons for wanting to use credit cards, though for many of us its all about earning points/miles. This was particularly prevalent in Australia, where airlines were charging as much as $8.50 to pay by credit card, even if the fare was just $50.

That is a 17% surcharge.

Fortunately, many airlines around the world no longer charge fees to pay by credit card, as both customers realise the airlines cost of providing this convenience was not nearly as high as the fees they were charging to do so, and various government regulatory bodies rule that any credit card payment fees must match the cost to the company/airline in providing this service.

For example, in Europe, EU regulations now prohibit credit card surcharges for Visa and Mastercard payments, and UK legislation extends this to American Express payments as well.

But in Australia credit card surcharges are still allowed. Local coffee shops and restaurants used to regularly charge a 3% surcharge for payments by American Express, which were both the most:

  • costly payments for retailers to accept and process, as well as
  • lucrative for customers to pay with, in terms of points earn

For Australias two biggest airlines, Qantas and Virgin Australia, this has meant they have set the following payment fees, regardless of the cost of the ticket:

Ology: What Are Points And Miles Worth

One way to come up with values is to shop for flights and hotels, and simply divide the number of points or miles by the cost. This sounds objective, but it would really just be based on which awards were chosen.

So while I certainly looked at the value of multiple redemptions, it was also necessary to incorporate my judgement and experience into the mix. Ive been collecting credit card rewards and airline miles since I was a teenager in the 1980s , and Ive been studying the field and writing about it professionally since 2008. Over this time, I estimate that Ive earned and spent over 10 million points and miles. Ive also booked hundreds of award flights and hotel stays on behalf of myself, my family and friends. So the values listed in our table represent a combination of my latest research into points and miles, as well as my judgement based on my personal experience.

Travel Rewards Cards And The Monthly Balance

It stands to reason that the more money you charge on a travel rewards card, the more points or miles you’ll get for those purchases. If you’re able to pay off your credit card balance monthly and avoid interest charges, then the travel rewards you get might be worth it. Paying off your credit card guarantees that you do not accrue high interest and fees that compound when you carry a balance from month to month.

So how can you ensure that you’ll pay the bill in full each month? Some consumers limit their spending to one credit card and pay it off as a monthly bill. Isolating spending makes it easier to rack up the amount needed to get significant points or miles. You could try getting a single travel rewards card and charging all your purchases to it each month, then paying the bill when it comes due.

Travel rewards credit cards can also be a good deal for business owners or employees who have company cards issued in their names. These cards can allow them to leverage business travel and operational expenses to earn rewards and have the business accounting department pay off the monthly balance. Again, this can help avoid paying interest on charges.

Points Vs Miles: Whats The Difference

The terms points and miles are simply different names for the rewards you can earn with your . While miles are traditionally associated with airlines, there are some airlines, including JetBlue Airways and Southwest Airlines, that use points instead.

Also, some general travel credit cards, including the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, call their rewards program currency miles instead of points.

Hotel loyalty programs, on the other hand, all call the rewards you can earn with their credit cards points.

Because the two terms are more about nomenclature than anything else, youll have an easier time differentiating how much credit card points are worth based on the type of rewards program your card comes with. More specifically, well look at general travel credit cards, airline credit cards, and hotel credit cards.

Do You Have An Annual Fee

Are credit card points worth the hassle?

Another thing to consider is the annual fee that you are charged for having a credit card. It often makes sense to look for a . With so many credit cards on the market now, theres no reason to pay an annual fee.

Sometimes however, depending on the types of rewards you are looking to earn, it may make sense to get a credit card with an annual fee if you expect that the value of your rewards will exceed the cost of your annual fee. Before signing up for a reward-based credit card, you should check to see if you are on track to earn more in rewards than you would pay in the annual fee. Then you should compare that with similar rewards cards with no fee to see if you would come out ahead by switching cards.

Make The Most Of Your Rewards

To get the maximum value from your credit card rewards, you should earn more rewards than you pay in feesthat includes a late fee or transaction based fee, like a balance transfer or cash advance fee. Thats much easier to do once youve totaled the value of your rewards and perks. Simply compare the value of your rewards to the total interest and fees you pay on your card.

How do your rewards stack up? If youre not earning enough rewards to cover the cost of your credit card, it may be a sign to switch to a different rewards credit card.

How Much are Credit Card Points Actually Worth?

Keep in mind that many of the major credit card issuers have put certain restrictions in place to limit so-called churning that might preclude you from opening a new credit card or earning its sign-up bonus.

Few of these rules are published, and there are exceptions to some. But they are still worth keeping in mind because the last thing you want is to apply for a card only to get denied. Or worse, to get approved and think you are going to earn the sign-up bonus only to be told that you are ineligible for it.

The best known of these policies is Chases 5/24 rule, which applies to popular cards such as the United Explorer Card and the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card. We have a thorough guide on the topic, but the gist is that Chase will generally not approve you for a new card if you have opened five or more personal credit cards in the last 24 months.

Likewise, Amex has gotten even more stringent about eligibility rules for many of its popular cards, including its Delta lineup, and limits bonus eligibility to once per lifetime on each product. On the plus side, the bank has created a welcome bonus qualification tool that will let you know if youre ineligible for a bonus before you pull the trigger on an application.
